This preliminary study was designed to investigate the ability of multiple axial volume three-dimensional fourier transform (3DFT) time-of-flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) to depict the carotid bifurcation in the early post-carotid endarterectomy period. Five patients underwent intra-operative digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and carotid MRA within 5 days of carotid endarterectomy. An axial volume fast imaging in steady-state precession (FISP) gradient-echo 3DFT TOF carotid MRA technique in this limited series appeared to display accurately the surgically significant abnormalities at the carotid bifurcation after endarterectomy. However, in normal or near-normal intra-operative DSA studies, overestimation of internal carotid artery stenoses was encountered. Postoperative MRA demonstrates potential as a useful non-invasive investigation after carotid endarterectomy but should be interpreted with caution until larger studies become available. 相似文献

In simultaneous experiments, the ability of inbred Wistar-Furth rat corneal cells to stimulate inbred Fisher rat lymphocytes in mixed culture was compared with the stimulatory capacity of the same number of Wistar-Furth skin, kidney, heart and lymphocyte cells. The tissue cells were dissociated and after inhibition by mitomycin C cultured with an equal number of allogeneic spleen lymphocytes for 5 days. In all of these mixed cell cultures, the allogeneic lymphocytic response was mainly to the major Ag-B2 histocompatibility antigen. The stimulatory effect of corneal cells was found to be the same as that of heart, kidney and skin cells. An in vivo method of monitoring healing was tested incorporating an Evaporimeter measuring water evaporation; reepithelialization was detected through reestablishment of the water barrier. In the first study two wounds were created with a 2-mm biopsy punch on each of the backs of 15 rabbits and covered with occlusive and semiocclusive dressings. Water loss increased from a preoperative value of 6 g m-2 hr-1 to 55 g m-2 hr-1 after surgery. Water loss from the occluded site returned to baseline values in 9 days as opposed to 17 days for the semioccluded sites (P less than 0.05). The second study followed the healing of full-thickness 4 X 4-cm wounds in five rabbits treated with fine-mesh gauze and five treated with a human amnion dressing. Wound area and water loss were observed during the repair process. Visually measuring the wound area, the injuries appeared 100% healed on Day 30. The Evaporimeter continued to detect significantly increased water loss up until Day 45 when the original baseline values were reached. No differences were observed between the gauze and amnion groups. The Evaporimeter presents a simple yet accurate, noninvasive tool measuring the wound healing endpoint based on regeneration of the epidermal water barrier. 相似文献

The systemic autoimmune disease lupus erythematosus (SLE) is frequently accompanied by neuropsychiatric manifestations and brain lesions of unknown etiology. The MRL-lpr mice show behavioral dysfunction concurrent with progression of a lupus-like disease, thus providing a valuable model in understanding the pathogenesis of autoimmunity-induced CNS damage. Profound neurodegeneration in the limbic system of MRL-lpr mice is associated with cytotoxicity of their cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to mature and immature neurons. We have recently shown that IgG-rich CSF fraction largely accounts for this effect. The present study examines IgG levels in serum and CSF, as well as the permeability of the blood-brain barrier in mice that differ in immune status, age, and brain morphology. In comparison to young MRL-lpr mice and age-matched congenic controls, a significant elevation of IgG and albumin levels were detected in the CSF of aged autoimmune MRL-lpr mice. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF MS confirmed elevation in IgG heavy and Ig light chain isoforms in the CSF. Increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier correlated with neurodegeneration (as revealed by Fluoro Jade B staining) in periventricular areas. Although the source and specificity of neuropathogenic antibodies remain to be determined, these results support the hypothesis that a breached blood-brain barrier and IgG molecules are involved in the etiology of CNS damage during SLE-like disease. 相似文献
