Summary Background In population‐based studies using self‐reported nickel allergy, a hand eczema prevalence of 30–43% has been reported in individuals with nickel allergy. In a previous Swedish study, 958 schoolgirls were patch tested for nickel. In a questionnaire follow up 20 years later no association was found between nickel allergy and hand eczema. Objectives To investigate further the relation between nickel allergy and hand eczema. Methods Three hundred and sixty‐nine women, still living in the same geographical area, now aged 30–40 years, were patch tested and clinically investigated regarding hand eczema. Results Patch testing showed 30·1% nickel‐positive individuals. The adjusted prevalence proportion ratio (PPR) for hand eczema after age 15 years in relation to nickel patch test results was 1·03 (95% confidence interval, CI 0·71–1·50). A history of childhood eczema was reported by 35·9%, and the PPR for hand eczema in relation to childhood eczema was 3·68 (95% CI 2·45–5·54). When analysing the relation separately in women with and without a history of childhood eczema a statistical interaction was found. The hand eczema risk was doubled in nickel‐positive women without a history of childhood eczema, with a PPR of 2·23 (95% CI 1·10–4·49) for hand eczema after age 15 years. Conclusions A doubled risk for hand eczema was found in nickel‐positive women without a history of childhood eczema. When analysing all participants, there was no statistically significant difference between nickel‐positive and nickel‐negative women regarding occurrence of hand eczema. The most important risk factor for hand eczema was childhood eczema. The risk for hand eczema in nickel‐positive women may previously have been overestimated. 相似文献

A platelet storage pool deficiency (SPD) is present in platelets from cattle with the Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS). The most plausible hypothesis for the SPD is that dense granule precursors are simply not formed in CHS megakaryocytes. There is, however, evidence that some recently acquired 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) is located in granules and that the granules have an acidic interior. To obtain a greater understanding of the processing of 5HT by SPD platelets, normal and CHS platelets were incubated with 4,6-difluoro-5HT and studied by 19F NMR at 188 mHz. Normal platelets contained 2 compartments for 4,6-difluoro-5HT as indicated by 2 well-developed resonances for each 19F. The resonances were unequal in magnitude. The predominant resonance broadened with lower temperatures and was absent in CHS bovine platelets; it was, therefore, the dense granule compartment. There was only 1 resonance for each 19F in CHS platelets. The chemical shift was identical to the minor resonance, or non-dense granule resonance, found in normal bovine platelets but the resonance width was increased, indicating that some non-dense granule 4,6-difluoro-5HT was in a more restricted environment within CHS platelets than it was in normal platelets. 相似文献

The relationship between physical activity, physical fitness and total
radical trapping antioxidant potential (TRAP) was examined in the Northern
Ireland Health and Activity Survey. This was a cross-sectional population
study (n = 1600) using a two-stage probability sample of the population.
TRAP was calculated using the sum of the individual serum antioxidant
concentrations (urate, protein thiols, ascorbate, alpha tocopherol and
bilirubin) multiplied by their respective stoichiometric values. Physical
fitness was determined by estimation of VO2max by extrapolation from
submaximal oxygen uptake, and physical activity was recorded by
computer-assisted interview. Mean serum TRAP concentrations were
significantly higher in males (653 +/- 8.2 mumol/l, mean +/- SEM) compared
to females (564 +/- 8.0 mumol/l) (p < 0.0001). Both male and female
smokers had significantly lower TRAP values than non-smokers (males p <
0.0001, females p = 0.02). In females, there was a positive relationship of
TRAP with age (p < 0.001) and body mass index (p < 0.001) but a
negative relationship with physical fitness (p < 0.05). The known
beneficial effects of exercise and activity do not appear to be directly
mediated through increased antioxidant status.

Three defining clinical symptoms of autism are aberrant reciprocal social interactions, deficits in social communication, and repetitive behaviors, including motor stereotypies and insistence on sameness. We developed a set of behavioral tasks designed to model components of these core symptoms in mice. Male mice from 10 inbred strains were characterized in assays for sociability, preference for social novelty, and reversal of the spatial location of the reinforcer in T-maze and Morris water maze tasks. Six strains, C57BL/6J, C57L/J, DBA/2J, FVB/NJ, C3H/HeJ, and AKR/J, showed significant levels of sociability, while A/J, BALB/cByJ, BTBR T(+)tf/J, and 129S1/SvImJ mice did not. C57BL/6J, C57L/J, DBA/2J, FVB/NJ, BALB/cByJ, and BTBR T(+)tf/J showed significant preference for social novelty, while C3H/HeJ, AKR/J, A/J, and 129S1/SvImJ did not. Normal scores on relevant control measures confirmed general health and physical abilities in all strains, ruling out artifactual explanations for social deficits. Elevated plus maze scores confirmed high anxiety-like behaviors in A/J, BALB/cByJ, and 129S1/SvImJ, which could underlie components of their low social approach. Strains that showed high levels of performance on acquisition of a T-maze task were also able to reach criterion for reversal learning. On the Morris water maze task, DBA/2J, AKR/J, BTBR T(+)tf/J, and 129S1/SvImJ failed to show significant quadrant preference during the reversal probe trial. These results highlight a dissociation between social task performance and reversal learning. BTBR T(+)tf/J is a particularly interesting strain, displaying both low social approach and resistance to change in routine on the water maze, consistent with an autism-like phenotype. Our multitask strategy for modeling symptoms of autism will be useful for investigating targeted and random gene mutations, QTLs, and microarray analyses. 相似文献

In population ecology, there has been a fundamental controversy about the relative importance of competition-driven (density-dependent) population regulation vs. abiotic influences such as temperature and precipitation. The same issue arises at the community level; are population sizes driven primarily by changes in the abundances of cooccurring competitors (i.e., compensatory dynamics), or do most species have a common response to environmental factors? Competitive interactions have had a central place in ecological theory, dating back to Gleason, Volterra, Hutchison and MacArthur, and, more recently, Hubbell's influential unified neutral theory of biodiversity and biogeography. If competitive interactions are important in driving year-to-year fluctuations in abundance, then changes in the abundance of one species should generally be accompanied by compensatory changes in the abundances of others. Thus, one necessary consequence of strong compensatory forces is that, on average, species within communities will covary negatively. Here we use measures of community covariance to assess the prevalence of negative covariance in 41 natural communities comprising different taxa at a range of spatial scales. We found that species in natural communities tended to covary positively rather than negatively, the opposite of what would be expected if compensatory dynamics were important. These findings suggest that abiotic factors such as temperature and precipitation are more important than competitive interactions in driving year-to-year fluctuations in species abundance within communities. 相似文献
