Notch pathway regulates key processes in the kidney, involved in embryonic development and tissue damage. In many human chronic renal diseases a local activation of Notch pathway has been described, suggesting that several components of Notch pathway could be considered as biomarkers of renal damage. Experimental studies by genetic modulation of Notch components or pharmacological approaches by γ-secretase inhibitors have demonstrated the role of this pathway in renal regeneration renal, podocyte apoptosis, proliferation and fibroblasts activation, and induction of epithelial to mesenchymal transition of tubular epithelial cells. Recent studies suggest an interaction between Notch and NF-κB pathway involved in the regulation of renal inflammatory process. On the other hand, there are some miRNAs that could regulate Notch components and down-stream responses. All these data suggest that Notch blockade could be a novel therapeutic option for renal diseases. 相似文献

Abstract – Introduction: The Internet is an easily accessible and commonly used source of health‐related information, but evaluations of the quality of this information within the dental trauma field are still lacking. Aim: The aims of this study are (i) to present the most current scientific knowledge regarding mouth guards used in sport activities, (ii) to suggest a scoring system to evaluate the quality of information pertaining to mouth guard protection related to World Wide Web sites and (iii) to employ this scoring system when seeking reliable mouth guard–related websites. Materials and methods: First, an Internet search using the keywords ‘athletic injuries/prevention and control’ and ‘mouth protector’ or ‘mouth guards’ in English was performed on PubMed, Cochrane, SvedMed+ and Web of Science to identify scientific knowledge about mouth guards. Second, an Internet search using the keywords ‘consumer health information Internet’, ‘Internet information public health’ and ‘web usage‐seeking behaviour’ was performed on PubMed and Web of Science to obtain scientific articles seeking to evaluate the quality of health information on the Web. Based on the articles found in the second search, two scoring systems were selected. Then, an Internet search using the keywords ‘mouth protector’, ‘mouth guards’ and ‘gum shields’ in English was performed on the search engines Google, MSN and Yahoo. The websites selected were evaluated for reliability and accuracy. Results: Of the 223 websites retrieved, 39 were designated valid and evaluated. Nine sites scored 22 or higher. The mean total score of the 39 websites was 14.2. Fourteen websites scored higher than the mean total score, and 25 websites scored less. The highest total score, presented by a Public Institution Web site (Health Canada), was 31 from a maximum possible score of 34, and the lowest score was 0. Conclusion: This study shows that there is a high amount of information about mouth guards on the Internet but that the quality of this information varies. It should be the responsibility of health care professionals to suggest and provide reliable Internet URL addresses to patients. BACKGROUND/AIMS: Extrapyramidal signs have been described in cirrhosis and there is little information about their clinical significance. The aims of this study have been to investigate the relationship between extrapyramidal signs and cognitive impairment, and what is their influence on quality of life. METHODS: 46 patients with cirrhosis were evaluated for cognitive impairment with psychometric tests (Trail-Making Test part A, Grooved-Pegboard, Block-Design, Oral Symbol Digit and Stroop Test) and cognitive evoked potentials (P300). Extrapyramidal signs were evaluated using the UPDRS scale. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) was measured using SF-36 scale and the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ). RESULTS: Twenty-two patients had extrapyramidal signs, and these patients scored worse in all psychometric tests, except Block-Design. Patients with extrapyramidal signs also showed a longer P300 latency. Moreover, patients with extrapyramidal signs had the worst score in all the HRQL scales used. A multivariate analysis disclosed that the only variable showing an independent relationship to the mental component summary of SF-36 and with CLDQ was UPDRS score. CONCLUSIONS: We have found a clear relationship between the presence of extrapyramidal signs and cognitive impairment. Moreover, patients with extrapyramidal signs have worse scores in quality of life scales. 相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the natural history of undifferentiated thyroid carcinoma (UTC) in the iodine-deficient province of Salta, Argentina, in relation to salt iodization and health care standards. Five hundred ninety-three thyroid cancers diagnosed from 1958 to2012 were reviewed based mainly on the WHO classification and grouped into three periods, one before and two after iodine prophylaxis. The incidence of UTC was analyzed in relation to changing concentrations of potassium iodide (KI) in salt during the prophylaxis period (from 40 to 33.3 mg KI/kg salt), establishment of primary health care centers throughout the region, and use of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. Twenty-nine UTCs were found in the whole series. The frequency of UTC decreased from 15.2 % (9/59 cases) in the first period to 2.6 % (10/381 cases) well after salt iodination (x 2 Fisher's test, p?<?0.0002), and the incidence from 1.4/106/year to 0.1/106/year (Student's t test, p?<?0.06), respectively. The decline of UTC after iodine prophylaxis occurred even after decreasing concentrations of KI in salt and timely coincided with the establishment of primary health care centers throughout the region and routine use of FNA. The lower rate of UTC after iodine prophylaxis in the province of Salta is mostly related to earlier detection of more differentiated thyroid tumors rather than higher salt iodization. 相似文献

No studies had investigated circadian and circannual rhythms of bone biomarkers in whole saliva. We evaluated the salivary
daily and seasonal rhythm of carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX) and bone alkaline phosphatase (b-ALP).
Forty clinical and oral healthy ambulatory pre- and postmenopausal women from two southern Argentine cities: Comodoro Rivadavia
(latitude 45o S) and Ushuaia (latitude 54o S) were included in the study. CTX levels were evaluated in serum, urine, and saliva,
and b-ALP levels were measured in serum and saliva. In both groups of women, salivary CTX showed a maximum percentage of change
early in the morning (80%) and a minimum in the late afternoon (45%), similarly to the pattern observed in urinary samples.
No daily rhythm was observed in serum or salivary b-ALP. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D levels decreased in winter vs. summer (p < 0.01) without differences between the two studied groups. Conversely, parathormone reached higher levels in winter (p < 0.05) which induced a slight non-significant increment in salivary CTX and b-ALP levels. The results showed that, as in
serum and urinary samples, salivary CTX exhibits daily and a slight seasonal rhythmicity. Whole non-stimulated saliva is a
useful tool to detect several oral and systemic diseases because it has important advantages compared to serum and urinary
samples. Then, it may also be a promising sample to test changes in bone metabolism contributing to diagnose and to monitor
