BACKGROUND:
Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are currently the most common isolates recovered from the blood of patients with cancer and febrile neutropenia (FN).OBJECTIVES:
To assess the mortality associated with bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by CoNS in cancer patients with FN.METHODS:
A prospective cohort study was conducted in a single tertiary hospital from October 2009 to August 2011. Follow-ups were performed on all of the adult patients who were admitted to the hematology ward with cancer and FN. Bacteremia caused by CoNS was defined as two positive results of two independent cultures. Twenty-eight days after the onset of FN, the mortality rates of the patients with BSIs caused by CoNS were compared with those of patients with BSIs caused by other pathogens.RESULTS:
A total of 169 subjects were evaluated. During the study period, 78 patients with BSIs were documented. Twenty-three BSIs (29.4%) were a result of CoNS. CoNS-induced bacteremia resulted in lower 28-day mortality compared with bacteremia caused by other pathogens (4.3% versus 32.7%; log-rank P=0.009). In a Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, BSIs caused by CoNS were independently associated with lower mortality (HR 0.09 [95% CI 0.01 to 0.74]).CONCLUSIONS:
In adult patients with cancer and FN, BSIs caused by CoNS were associated with lower mortality compared with BSIs caused by other pathogens. 相似文献84.

Objectives
The aim of this study was to evaluate the apical sealability of Fillapex®, Endo-CPM-Sealer® and Sealapex®.Material and Methods
Ninety-four freshly extracted single-rooted teeth were selected and decoronated. All teeth were radiographed to confirm the existence of a single and straight root canal, which was prepared using Protaper Universal and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. The teeth were randomly divided in groups of 10 specimens each according to the sealer, and the canals were filled using the single cone technique and one of the sealers. Four additional teeth were used as controls. The teeth were submitted to dye leakage with Rhodamine B for 24 h but using vacuum on the initial 15 min. Thereafter, they were cut longitudinally and the leakage was measured in a linear fashion from apex to crown. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey''s tests at 5% significance level.Results
Fillapex® and Sealapex® showed significantly less dye leakage than Endo-CPM-Sealer® (p<0.05).Conclusions

Eosinophilic Ulcer (EU) is a rare self-limiting chronic benign lesion of the oral mucosa with pathogenesis still unclear, however it may resemble malignancies, traumatic ulcerations and some infections such as deep fungal infections, tuberculosis and primary syphilis. This is a case report of a patient with EU in the lateral border of the tongue with no history of associated trauma and refractory to treatment with drugs. Autophagy is the process by which superfluous or damaged macromolecules or organelles are degraded by the lysosome. Pharmacologic and genetic evidence indicates that autophagy plays pleiotropic functions in cellular homeostasis, development, survival, and differentiation. The differentiation of human blood monocytes into macrophages is a caspase-dependent process when triggered ex vivo by colony stimulating factor-1. We show here, using pharmacologic inhibitors, siRNA approaches, and Atg7-/- mice, that autophagy initiated by ULK1 is required for proper colony stimulating factor-1-driven differentiation of human and murine monocytes. We also unravel a role for autophagy in macrophage acquisition of phagocytic functions. Collectively, these findings highlight an unexpected and essential role of autophagy during monocyte differentiation and acquisition of macrophage functions. 相似文献
