Vaginal candidosis is one of the most common infections of the vagina and the first accredited record of the disease appeared in 1849. Over the years the terms ‘candidiasis’ and ‘candidosis’ have been used, but it is generally accepted now that the terms are synonymous, and the term most commonly in use today is ‘candidosis’. Mainly caused by the yeast Candida albicans, the condition is characterised by intense inflammation of the vaginal mucosa and a curdy, off-white discharge; it is often associated with severe vulval itching and possibly burning pain. The severity of symptoms seems to vary greatly from patient to patient and the reason for this is unclear. It is suggested that in some patients there may be an element of hypersensitivity. Vaginal candidosis may occur in children but is most common in adults and only sometimes affects the elderly. The majority of women will suffer at least one attack of vaginal candidosis during their lifetime, and there are several predisposing factors such as diabetes, pregnancy and antibiotics. BACKGROUND: The maximum number of hair grafts that can be safely implanted in 1 cm2 is still debatable. To our knowledge, no previous report has addressed this issue in three dimensions, taking into account the size, the angle of the graft, and the intergraft distance. OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of the size and angle of the graft and the intergraft distance on dense packing. METHODS: Using a mathematical formula (the maximum number of hair grafts in 1 cm2 = 33 * cosine), the volume of the recipient area and the volume of the hair graft are calculated, assuming that the surface area of the recipient area is 1 cm2, the diameter of the hair graft is 1 mm, and the intergraft distance is 1.5 mm laterally and 1 mm anteriorly and posteriorly. RESULTS: The maximum number of hair grafts that could be implanted in 1 cm2 at a 90 angle in relation to the skin surface is 33 grafts, at a 60 angle is 28 grafts, and at a 30 angle is 16 grafts. CONCLUSION: The maximum number of hair grafts that can be implanted in any given recipient area depends on the graft size, the angle or direction of these grafts, and the intergraft distance. There is little doubt that the role of the nurse teacher is complex and multifaceted in nature. The apparently conflicting demands of NHS trusts and education in the United Kingdom, at the time of integration of nurse education into the higher education sector, further complicates the role. This recognition underlines the need to capture and measure key aspects of nurse teacher function in order to maximize educational gain. Using a comprehensive literature review, focus group discussions and a small number of individual semi-structured interviews, this preliminary study explored the issue of teacher workload, from the perspective of the principal stakeholders in nurse and higher education.
