Das Stammzellgesetz von 2002

Although Germany does not have a law for reproductive medicine, a law governing embryonic stem cells has existed since 2002. Having such a law is legally and politically wise. It stipulates that the import of embryonic stem cells into Germany is allowable only in certain cases. However, the law is unclear in many areas. It stands in latent contradiction to the duty of the health care system to enhance medical and therapeutic research and the freedom of scientists to conduct their research. One concrete problem with the law is the regulation by date which prevents the import of younger, better quality stem cells. A further problem is that the law results in a moral double standard because Germany uses stem cells for its own research but only when produced in other countries. In the future development of other legal regulations—for example, governing the practice of preimplantation diagnostics—such a double standard should be avoided.     

Shifts in the parameters of cardio- and hemodynamics and their correction using liposomes in the process of the development of septic shock

The interdependence between changes in central cardiac hemodynamics and regional blood flow has been studied in dogs with experimental septic shock. Possible correction of the above damages by direct delivery of liposomes to tissues of the septic focus has been investigated. It has been found that vascular insufficiency is primary in the genesis of decompensated circulatory disturbances, with its progress leading to the inhibition of pump and contractility cardiac functions. Regional subcutaneous administration of liposomes in developing septic shock prevents the onset of cardiovascular disturbances.     

Ablative laser resurfacing: is it still the gold standard for facial rejuvenation?

A new era in dermatological cosmetology, especially in the field of nonsurgical skin rejuvenation, started with ablative resurfacing, at first by carbon dioxide laser and later by Er:YAG or their combination. Although ablative lasers result in major improvements in photodamaged skin, the related postoperative recovery time and side effects are currently unacceptable for most patients. During the last forty years, skin resurfacing has changed dramatically. After ablative laser systems, nonablative and now fractional laser systems have been developed, fulfilling the new demands for a lesser risk of side effects and minimal or no downtime.     

Novel imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine and triaza-benzo[c]fluorene derivatives: synthesis, antiproliferative activity and DNA binding studies

In the present paper, we have described the synthesis and biological activity of the novel derivatives of imidazo[4,5-b]pyridines and triaza-benzo[c]fluorenes (7-21, 24-26, 28-29). A preponderance of these compounds exerted strong cytostatic effects on the panel of seven human tumour cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. In particular, imidazo[4,5-b]pyridines and triaza-benzo[c]fluorenes including 2-imidazolinyl derivatives showed the most potent antitumour activity. Similarly, triaza-benzo[c]fluorenes 18 and 20 induced strong growth inhibition of tested tumour cell lines, and showed low cytotoxicity in normal human fibroblasts. DNA interaction studies of these compounds demonstrated that N-methylated 16 and 2-imidazolinyl 28 triaza-benzo[c]fluorenes bind to DNA in an intercalative mode.
