To examine the manner of interactions between immune cells and central nervous system (CNS) neurons, mouse hippocampal neurons were co-cultured with lymphokine (IL-2)-activated killer (LAK) cells. Immunocytochemical and time-lapse observations indicated that LAK cells migrated along neuronal processes and made adhesive contacts with them. In addition to the direct physical effects, LAK cells released glutamate, induced the formation of beads-like structure in the dendrites of about 14% of hippocampal neurons and caused the reduction of dendritic protrusions. These results suggest that infiltrating immune cells can form direct adhesive connections with CNS neurons and affect their dendritic morphology. 相似文献

Temocapril is an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI), a prodrug with a thiazepine ring. Its active form, temocaprilat, is slightly more potent than enalaprilat in inhibiting ACE isolated from rabbit lung. The inhibitory potency of temocaprilat on isolated rat aorta is 3 times that of enalaprilat. Temocapril is excreted in the bile and urine and can be used in patients with renal insufficiency. It reduces blood pressure without causing any significant change in heart rate or cardiac output. Temocapril has been reported to improve endothelial dysfunction in vitro by suppressing increased oxidative stress. In vivo it improves reactive hyperemia in patients with essential hypertension. It has been reported to prevent coronary vascular remodeling in vivo by suppressing local ACE and increased oxidative stress. In humans temocapril has been found to improve insulin resistance partly by increasing adiponectin levels. Cardiac remodeling was improved by temocapril not only in experiment animals but also in humans. It improves renal function and decreases urinary albumin excretion in diabetics as well as in hypertensive patients. Temocapril is currently marketed only in Japan. Considering its beneficial effects and unique pharmacokinetics, temocapril, is likely to be introduced in other countries as well. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: A loosely balanced total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is reported to produce a good postoperative range of motion (ROM), but too much laxity is thought to be the cause of persistent pain and worsened functionality. METHODS: The anteroposterior and mediolateral laxity values were measured to evaluate the influence of stability after cruciate-retaining (CR) TKA on ROM and the modified Knee Society score at 4-8 years after the operation. Twenty-one knees in 15 patients with an average age of 68 years who had undergone a CR TKA for osteoarthrosis were examined. The mean preoperative and postoperative ROM was 124 degrees and 112 degrees, respectively. The mean anteroposterior and mediolateral laxity values were 9.7 mm and 10.6 degrees, respectively. RESULTS: No correlation was found between the postoperative ROM and laxity or between the modified Knee Society score and laxity. A loosely balanced TKA did not produce a good postoperative ROM. No parameters suggested that lax knees showed a higher pain score and lower functional score than stable knees. 相似文献

We assessed the possible association of gastrointestinal cancers with cruciferous vegetables and mushrooms in a multicenter, hospital-based case-control study in an agricultural area of Japan. One hundred forty-nine cases and 287 controls for stomach cancer and 115 cases and 230 controls for colorectal cancer were matched by age, sex, and residential area. In stomach cancer, the protective effect of vegetables (consumption of total vegetable) was obscure, but it became clearer when we examined specific kinds of vegetables. Marginal associations were observed in the group of the highest consumption of Chinese cabbage (odds ratio [OR] = 0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.35-1.07), broccoli (OR = 0.60; 95% CI = 0.34-1.08), Hypsizigus marmoreus (Bunashimeji) (OR = 0.57; 95% CI = 0.31-1.04) and Pholita nameko (Nameko) (OR = 0.56; 95% CI = 0.30-1.06). In colorectal cancer, we observed decreased risks from the highest tertile of total vegetables (OR = 0.22; 95% CI = 0.08-0.66) and low-carotene-containing vegetables (OR = 0.28; 95% CI = 0.08-0.77), and inverse associations were observed in the group of the highest consumption of broccoli (OR = 0.18; 95% CI = 0.06-0.58). Although the sample size was limited, subgroup analyses showed that the associations differed with the histopathological subtype. These findings suggest that cruciferous vegetables decrease the risk of both stomach and colorectal cancer, and that mushrooms are associated with a decreased risk of stomach cancer. 相似文献

Extremely rarely renal cell carcinoma metastasizes to the contralateral perirenal fat. A 57-year-old male was admitted with macroscopic hematuria and lower left abdominal pain in December 1994. He was diagnosed with left renal cancer, and underwent left radical nephrectomy (RCC pT2, grade 1) in January 1995. Followup imaging studies showed a tumor arising from the right perirenal fat in 5 years. Tumor excision was performed in May 2000. Pathological findings revealed renal cell carcinoma growing in the fat, which had the same, pathology as the left renal cancer. 相似文献

SAP-1 (stomach cancer-associated protein tyrosine phosphatase-1) is a transmembrane-type protein tyrosine phosphatase that has been implicated as a negative regulator of integrin-mediated signaling. The potential role of this enzyme in hepatocarcinogenesis has now been investigated by examining its expression in 32 surgically excised human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) specimens. Both immunohistochemical and immunoblot analyses revealed that normal liver tissue, as well as tissue affected by chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis, contained substantial amounts of SAP-1. The expression level of SAP-1 in 75% of well-differentiated HCCs was similar to or higher than that observed in the surrounding noncancerous tissue. In contrast, the abundance of SAP-1 in 85.7% of moderately differentiated HCCs and in all poorly differentiated HCCs was greatly reduced compared with that in the adjacent tissue. Indeed, SAP-1 was almost undetectable in 83.3% of poorly differentiated HCCs. Furthermore, expression of recombinant SAP-1 in two highly motile human HCC cell lines resulted in a change in morphology and a marked reduction in both migratory activity and growth rate. In conclusion, these results indicate that SAP-1 expression is downregulated during the dedifferentiation of human HCC, and that this downregulation may play a causal role in disease progression. 相似文献

We herein report a case of postoperative fecal fistula following an appendectomy which was successfully treated by the use of autologous fibrin glue. An 82-year-old man had acute appendicitis and underwent an appendectomy. Later, a fecal fistula developed and he underwent drainage treatment twice. After 4 weeks of drainage and during the third recurrence, the remaining fistula was successfully treated using autologous fibrin glue, instead of surgery, due to potential complications and the risks of associated with advanced age. No recurrence has been observed for 5 months. In conclusion, autologous fibrin gluing for fecal fistula was found to be a safe, economical, and effective treatment. A search of Medline from 1980 until 2002 revealed no other report of this treatment for postoperative fecal fistula following an appendectomy. 相似文献
