Henneguya shackletoni sp. nov. (Myxosporea, Bivalvulida, Myxobolidae) from the Falklands mullet, Eleginops maclovinus (Cuvier) (Teleostei, Eleginopidae) in the Falkland Islands

During a survey of the parasite fauna of the euryhaline notothenioid fish Eleginops maclovinus (Cuvier) caught in brackish water creeks in the Falkland Islands, small white cysts were observed in the mesenteries and on the surfaces of the visceral organs and heart. On dissection these proved to be plasmodia of a species of the myxosporean genus Henneguya. This is the first record of a member of this genus from a marine or euryhaline fish in the south-west Atlantic. A comparison of the spore of our species with other species in the genus convinced us that our species is new. This paper describes it as Henneguya shackletoni sp. nov. after the Shackleton Fund which funded the study.     

Challenges for nephrology nurses in the management of children with chronic kidney disease.

An important treatment goal for pediatric nephrology caregivers is the optimization of a child's capacity for normal growth and development. However, the physiologic and metabolic derangements associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) significantly alter these processes, creating important challenges in the care of affected children. Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines support early recognition and treatment of CKD-related complications to improve growth and development and, ultimately, quality of life for children with this chronic condition.     

Adolescence Mycosis Fungoides: An Unusual Presentation with Hypopigmentation

Mycosis fungoides (M.F.) is a rare cutaneous malignancy of childhood and adolescence. The disease commonly presents with the classic sequence of erythematous patches and plaques. Hypopigmentation as the presenting symptom is distinctly rare. This is the 9th case report of M.F. presenting with hypopigmentation in a patient under 20 years of age. The disease was only partially controlled with PUVA therapy, necessitating nitrogen mustard treatment.     

Calretinin is differentially localized in magnocellular oxytocin neurons of the rat hypothalamus. A double-labeling immunofluorescence study

By use of a double-labeling immunofluorescence method with a confocal laser scanning microscope, we have examined whether a calcium-binding protein, calretinin, is localized in magnocellular oxytocin and vasopressin neurons of the rat hypothalamus. In the supraoptic nucleus, all oxytocin-labeled cells were stained for calretinin. However, in the magnocellular part of the paraventricular nucleus, almost all oxytocin-stained cells were devoid of calretinin immunoreactivity. All vasopressin-positive cells of both the supraoptic nucleus and the magnocellular part of the paraventricular nucleus lacked calretinin immunoreactivity. No calretinin immunoreactivity was found in oxytocin-labeled cells of the the anterior commissural nucleus or in vasopressin-labeled cells of the suprachiasmatic nucleus. We previously showed that another calcium-binding protein, calbindin-D28k, was localized in magnocellular oxytocin neurons of the supraoptic nucleus but not in those of the paraventricular nucleus. These findings suggest that, in general, magnocellular oxytocin neurons of the supraoptic nucleus and those of the paraventricular nucleus can be chemically distinguished, that is, the former contain both calretinin and calbindin-D28k but the latter lack the two calcium-binding proteins.     

A case of quadricuspid aortic valve with aortic regurgitation

A 67-year-old man with grade 3 aortic valve regurgitation was found to have a quadricuspid aortic valve. The aortic valve consisted of 1 large, 2 intermediate and 1 small sized cusp. An accessory cusp located between the right and noncoronary cusps, and shaped like a hammock which sling by the fibrous strings originating from the both commissures to the aortic wall. Aortic valve replacement was successfully performed with a 23 mm St. Jude Medical prosthetic valve, and the patient is asymptomatic five months post-operatively. Histological examination of the resected cusps showed fibrous thickening and no rheumatic valvulitis or infective endocarditis.
