Development of cysticercoid larva of Hymenolepis nana var. fraterna in Tenebrio molitor and Leucophaea maderae haemoceles (author's transl)

When embryos of Hymenolepis nana var. fraterna are injected abdominally, they are able to reach the cysticercoid stage in the haemocele of Leucophaea maderae which naturally resist to infection by ingestion of the eggs. The haemocytic defence reaction of the cockroach and the structure of the surface of larvae are examined and compared with development in a natural host Tenebrio molitor.     

The prevalence, severity and factors associated with urinary incontinence in a random sample of the elderly.

A study to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence in a random sample of a total elderly community is described. The prevalence of incontinence in women aged 65 years or more was found to be 17% and in men 11%. The findings show that the prevalence of incontinence is particularly high among residents of old people's homes and geriatric hospitals, but that the majority of cases occur within the general community. The prevalence increases with age in both sexes; associations with a history of cerebrovascular disease, certain surgical procedures, multiple hospital admissions and drug usage are described. The findings of a follow-up study suggest that, although the disorder is long-standing and severe in a proportion of subjects, it is transient in approximately a third of all elderly subjects with the condition.

Ultrastructural studies of alterations induced by microwaves inToxocara canis eggs: prophylactic interest

The ultrastructure ofToxocara canis eggs is described before and after exposure to microwaves. The morphology of normal eggs is compared to that of eggs from other helminths. Following treatment, the complete disorganization of the surface structure of the shell and the loss of much turgidity of the egg are observed. The destruction of the internal structure is most marked in the center of the egg and is associated with the disappearance of some layers of the shell. In addition, there is substantial damage to the synthesis apparatus (ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, lipid cisternae). An explanation based on the specific action of microwaves and micro-overheating is proposed, and the prophylactic use of this technique is considered.     

Three cases of spontaneous extracranial vertebral artery dissection

We describe three cases of extracranial vertebral artery dissection that are unusual in both their modes of presentation and their associations with other pathologic conditions. The first patient had Marfan's syndrome and migraine; his dissection was asymptomatic and was diagnosed by chance at the time of repeat angiography following a previous internal carotid artery dissection. The second patient had systemic lupus erythematosus and presented with a subarachnoid hemorrhage attributed to an intracranial vertebral artery dissection by the demonstration of an extracranial dissection. The third patient had a minor basilar artery stroke in which dissection had occurred beside a congenital hemivertebra deformity.
