Objective. To design an educational activity and evaluate its effectiveness on increasing third-year pharmacy students’ knowledge and confidence to recommend self-care products to patients.Design. Faculty members created a self-care activity, the Amazing Self-Care Race, for educational use in a pharmaceutical care laboratory course. Student teams worked competitively to complete 15 stations focused on self-care. A complex, real-world case was presented at each station. Student recommendations were presented to a facilitator. Prior to and following the activity, students were invited to complete an online anonymous survey instrument.Assessment. Eighty-six students completed presurvey and postsurvey instruments to assess their knowledge and perceived confidence to recommend a self-care product to a patient prior to and following participation in the Amazing Self-Care Race. Students demonstrated a significant increase in their ability and confidence to recommend self-care products following the activity (p<0.001).Conclusion. The Amazing Self-Care Race is an effective educational activity that increases student knowledge and confidence in self-care therapeutics. The activity helped students to develop self-care skills, enabled them to learn through doing, encouraged them to synthesize information while making self-care recommendations, and helped them to develop confidence by thinking on their feet.  相似文献

Abnormal perceptual-motor coordination is hypothesized here to be involved in social deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To test this hypothesis, high functioning children with ASD and typical controls, similar in age as well as verbal and perceptive performance, performed perceptual-motor coordination tasks and several social competence tests. Spontaneous coordination, and intentionally required in-phase and anti-phase were examined. The oscillation kinematics, as well as the accuracy and stability of spontaneous coordination were similar in both groups. In intentional coordination, ASD children produced less accurate, less stable and less complex relative phases than the control group, and in-phase and anti-phase performances that were similar in accuracy, stability, and complexity. An age-dependent relationship between socio-adaptability and coordination skills suggested these skills develop together.  相似文献

Little is known about the extent and nature of low-income parents’ interactions with other parents and staff at childcare centres, despite the potential for these interactions to provide emotional, informational, and instrumental support. This study interviewed 51 parents at three childcare centres in low-income neighbourhoods in New York City. Twenty-six per cent of parents reported talking with other parents at drop-off and pick-up, and another 35% reported meeting with parents outside the centre in addition to talking with them at the centre. Parents’ extent of interaction was related to how long they spent at drop-off and pick-up, their participation in centre activities, and their sociability in general. All parents reported interacting with teachers and administrators, and described them more often than other parents as good sources of information and advice. We discuss the implications for parents and centre-based childcare providers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Low levels of symptom recognition by staff have been “gateway” barriers to the management of depression in long-term care. The study aims were to refine a depression training program for front-line staff in long-term care and provide evaluative knowledge outcome data. Three primary training modules provide an overview of depression symptoms; a review of causes and situational and environmental contributing factors; and communication strategies, medications, and clinical treatment strategies. McNemar’s chi-square tests and paired t-tests were used to examine change in knowledge. Data were analyzed for up to 143 staff members, the majority from nursing. Significant changes (p < .001) in knowledge were observed for all modules, with an average change of between 2 and 3 points. Evidence was provided that participants acquired desired information in the recognition, detection, and differential diagnosis and treatment strategies for those persons at significant risk for a depressive disorder.  相似文献

This study aimed to examine the associations of lifetime traumatic experience with presurgery and postsurgery eating pathology and postoperative weight loss in a sample of adult bariatric surgery patients using electronic medical record (EMR) data. Presurgery lifetime exposure to traumatic event, presurgery and postsurgery dysfunctional eating patterns, and post‐operative total and excess weight losses were extracted from electronic medical records of 200 adult bariatric surgery patients in 2013 and 2014. Logistic regression analyses were conducted. During their lifetime, 60.5% of the patients (81.5% women, age = 44.4 ± 11.5 years; BMIpre = 44.9 ± 5.5 kg/m2) reported that they were exposed to a traumatic event. Before surgery, trauma exposure was associated with impulsive, compulsive, or restrictive eating patterns (OR = 2.40), overeating or disturbed eating (OR = 1.55), and grazing or night eating behaviours (OR = 1.72). After surgery, trauma exposure was associated with lower total weight loss at 6 (OR = 2.06) and 24 months (OR = 2.06), and to overeating or disturbed eating (OR = 1.53) 12 months after surgery. Bariatric surgery candidates with a history of trauma exposure could benefit from closer medical, dietetic, and/or psychological follow‐up care to avoid insufficient postoperative weight loss as well as reappearance of dysfunctional eating patterns after surgery.  相似文献
