There is increasing evidence that immunological mechanisms play a role in
the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of endometriosis. It was therefore of
interest to study interleukin-8 (IL-8), a chemokine, in the peritoneal
fluid and peripheral blood of women undergoing laparoscopic procedures. The
presence and concentrations of IL-8 in relation to endometriosis,
infertility and abdominal pain were evaluated. Samples of peritoneal fluid
(n = 49) and peripheral blood (n = 50) were obtained from 50 consecutive
patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for various gynaecological
indications (abdominal pain, infertility, sterilization). IL-8 was present
in the peritoneal fluid of most women (87%). The concentration of IL-8 in
the peritoneal fluid was higher in women with endometriosis compared to
women without (P = 0.02). This difference was more pronounced in early
(stage 1) endometriosis (P = 0.001). IL-8 concentrations in the peritoneal
fluid were also higher in women with early endometriosis compared to women
with later stages of the disease (P = 0.003). Peripheral blood
concentrations did not correlate with peritoneal fluid concentrations of
IL-8 and/or the presence of endometriosis. We conclude that IL-8 is an
important factor that may contribute to the pathogenesis of endometriosis
possibly by promoting neovascularization. This information can be a guide
in the development of new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of
endometriosis.

Norepinephrine administration causes progressive hypertrophy of the mammalian heart as measured by myocardial mass. The purpose of this study was to determine the growth response of the myocardial tissue components as well as the myocardial cell itself to norepinephrine. Young, adult cats were given low doses of norepinephrine in dextrose or dextrose alone twice daily for 15 days. On day 16, there were no changes in the animals body weight, right ventricular systolic pressure, right ventricular end-diastolic pressure, heart rate, cardiac index, or blood pressure. However, the right ventricle/body weight, the left ventricle/body weight and the total heart weight/body weight were increased significantly in the norepinephrine treated animals. The increase was on the order of 40%. The cardiac muscle cell was also significantly increased in size and both the right and left ventricular cardiac muscle cells exhibited a dramatic increase in size as measured by cross sectional area. Upon stereological examination it was found that the amount of hypertrophy as seen in the cardiac muscle cells was paralleled by the hypertrophy seen in the other tissue components of the myocardium. The volume density of the muscle cells, the interstitial components, as well as the blood vessel compartment were identical in the control and in the norepinephrine-treated groups. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the response of the myocardium to norepinephrine is similar to that seen in response to a volume overload rather than that seen in response to pressure overload. 相似文献
GABAergic neurons have been identified in monkey sensory-motor cerebral cortex by light microscopic, immunocytochemical localization of the GABA synthesizing enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). All GAD-positive neurons are non-pyramidal cells. Their somata are present in all layers and are evenly distributed across layers II-VI of the motor cortex (area 4), but are found in greater concentrations in layers II, IV and VI of all areas of first somatic sensory cortex (SI; areas 3a, 3b and 1-2). GAD-positive puncta (putative axon terminals) are present throughout the sensory-motor cortex, and they are found immediately adjacent to the somata, dendrites and presumptive axon initial segments of GAD-negative pyramidal cells. In addition, they are observed in close approximation to the somata of both large and small GAD-positive neurons. In area 4, the density of puncta is highest in the superficial cortical layers (layers I-III) and gradually declines throughout the deeper layers. In SI, the highest densities of puncta are present in layer IV, while moderately high densities are found in layers I-III and VI. In areas 3a and 3b, the puncta in layers IV and VI are particularly numerous and form foci that exhibit greater density than adjacent regions. GAD-positive neurons with large somata, 15-33 micron in diameter, are present in layers IIIB-VI of all areas. Such cells have many primary dendrites that radiate in all directions. In addition they have axons that ascend either from the superficial aspect of the somata or from primary dendrites, and that exhibit horizontal collateral branches. These neurons closely resemble the large basket cells (Marin-Padilla, 1969; Jones, 1975), and they may give rise to many of the GAD-positive endings surrounding the somata and proximal dendrites of pyramidal cells in layers III-VI. In addition, small GAD-positive somata are present in all layers, but they are most numerous in layers II and IIIA of all areas and in layer IV of SI. The somata and proximal dendrites of these cells vary from a multipolar shape with small, beaded dendrites, found primarily in layer IV, to bitufted and multipolar shapes with larger, smooth dendrites. The diversity of somal sizes and locations, the variety of dendritic patterns, and the different distributions of GAD-positive puncta, all combine to suggest that several different morphological classes of intrinsic neurons comprise the GABA neurons of monkey cerebral cortex. 相似文献
To examine the health status of Hispanic agricultural workers in Florida and Georgia. Health data from agricultural workers in the Farm Worker Family Health Program (June 2019) and research studies in Florida (May 2015 and May 2019) were examined. Data from 728 agricultural workers were collected through sociodemographic questionnaire and clinical data. In the Florida sample, 83% were overweight or obese, 70% elevated blood pressure, 60% met the definition of prediabetes. In Georgia, 64% were overweight or obese and 67% had elevated blood pressure. Weak correlations were observed between BMI and systolic blood pressure (unadjusted r?=?0.20), diastolic blood pressure (unadjusted r?=?0.19), and glucose (unadjusted r?=?0.14). Adjusting for age and gender did not show statistically significant correlation between BMI and systolic and diastolic blood pressure or glucose. While BMI has been shown to be strongly associated with high blood pressure and impaired glucose, we found a weak correlation among agricultural workers. Given the common and high use of pesticides and elevated rates of hypertension, impaired glucose, and adiposity in agricultural workers, the public health impact of this relationship may require and lead to occupational reform that protects the health of agricultural workers. Future studies should assess occupational and environmental factors and lifestyle differences between agricultural workers and the general population to better understand these discrepancies in health status.
The palpation and enucleation of occult insulinomas (less than 15 mm) can be a difficult surgical problem even with good arteriographic localization. In the authors' limited experience, confirmation of arteriographic findings by pancreatic venous sampling provided little additional localizing information. However, if arteriography is negative or equivocal, venous sampling can indicate the segment of pancreas to be "blindly" resected if the adenoma is not palpable. Venous sampling may be misleading in polyendocrine syndromes because of the frequency of multiple adenomas and variable hormone production. 相似文献
Small immunoreactive cholinergic neurons were detected in the main and accessory olfactory bulbs of the rat with choline acetyltransferase immunocytochemistry. Such cells were also found in additional forebrain regions that received direct efferent innervation from the main olfactory bulb, such as the anterior olfactory nucleus, two subdivisions of the olfactory amygdala (nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract and anterior cortical nucleus), and the cortical-amygdaloid transition zone. Cholinergic neurons located in these olfactory-related regions were similar to each other morphologically and to those previously described by other investigators in the cerebral cortex, the hippocampus, and the basolateral amygdala. Somal measurements indicated that choline acetyltransferase-positive cells in olfactory-related regions were all essentially the same size, measuring 13-14 by 8-9 microns in major and minor diameters, respectively. In addition, these small cells were commonly bipolar in form with thin, smooth dendrites, and such characteristics have generally been associated with intrinsic, local circuit neurons in the forebrain. Depending on their location, however, these small cholinergic neurons differed from each other with regard to their frequency and dendritic orientation within planar sections. Choline acetyltransferase-immunoreactive cells in most cortical regions were relatively numerous and usually exhibited long, planar dendrites oriented perpendicularly to the pial surface. In contrast, dendrites of cholinergic neurons found in "cortical-like" regions (e.g. olfactory bulbs or nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract) were relatively sparse in number and appeared to be distinctly non-planar and randomly oriented. Despite these differences, the small choline acetyltransferase-positive cells had many features in common, including their distribution within forebrain regions that contained substantial terminal networks of choline acetyltransferase-positive axons thought to be derived primarily from the basal forebrain complex. In the rat, at least, the presence of small cholinergic interneurons within forebrain regions innervated by the large cholinergic projection neurons of the basal forebrain seems to be developing as a general principle of telencephalic organization. However, differences in both the size and the distribution of the terminal fields derived from each source imply a functional diversity between the intrinsic and extrinsic cholinergic systems of the forebrain. 相似文献
