The fatty acid composition of red blood cell (RBC) phospholipids in low-birth-weight infants was determined immediately after delivery and during the first 3 months of life. In the first study, infants were fed either human milk or two formulas with different fatty acid compositions but no long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA). Both groups of formula-fed infants had significantly lower levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in RBC phospholipids compared with breast-fed infants. RBC phospholipid DHA was similar in the two formula groups at all ages. In the second study, infants received either a non-supplemented or a LCPUFA-supplemented formula. DHA remained stable in RBC phospholipids of infants supplemented with LCPUFA, whereas DHA decreased in RBC phospholipids of unsupplemented infants. These results confirm that adding DHA to formulas is more effective than increasing 18:3 n-3 content, in maintaining RBC phospholipid DHA levels. 相似文献

In this study, a discrete choice model of alcoholism treatment location, with special emphasis on the roles of comorbidities is considered. Three specific questions are addressed: 1) what demographic and health factors have significant impacts on treatment location for both short- and long-term alcoholism and nonalcoholism treatments?; 2) how does the impact of alcohol dependence differ from the impact of alcohol abuse, on probabilities of short-term or long-term inpatient treatment?; and 3) what are the impacts of health comorbidities on probabilities of inpatient treatment in the short or long term? A binomial logit model is estimated for short- and long-term alcoholism treatment, as well as for short- and long-term nonalcoholism treatment (which occurs at the same time). The results indicate the importance of comorbidities in predicting treatment location. Dietary patterns have been used to identify typical combinations of foods that may be associated with disease risks. We defined dietary patterns among 195,298 participants of the Multiethnic Cohort Study in Hawaii and Los Angeles in 1993-1996. Intakes of Food Guide Pyramid groups were calculated from a quantitative FFQ for subjects of 5 ethnic groups (African Americans, Hawaiians, Japanese Americans, Latinos, and whites). Three distinct dietary patterns, "Fat and Meat," "Vegetables," and "Fruit and Milk," were identified by exploratory factor analysis with a varimax rotation and validated by confirmatory factor analysis. Similar factor loadings were found for each of 10 ethnic-gender groups in stratified analyses. The odds ratios (OR) for being above the median scores for each factor were calculated. Age, gender, and ethnicity had relatively strong associations with dietary patterns whereas education showed only weak associations. BMI > or = 30 was strongly positively associated with the Fat and Meat pattern (OR = 2.14, 95% CI: 2.08-2.20, vs. BMI < 25). Current smokers showed a positive association with the Fat and Meat pattern (OR = 1.67, CI: 1.62-1.72, vs. nonsmokers) and inverse associations with the Vegetables (OR = 0.66, CI: 0.64-0.68) and Fruit and Milk patterns (OR = 0.53, CI: 0.52-0.55). Physical activity was positively associated with the Vegetables and Fruit and Milk patterns but not with the Fat and Meat pattern.
