Circulating lipid levels and severity of diabetic retinopathy in type I diabetes mellitus

Plasma lipid levels have been proposed as probable risk factors of diabetic retinopathy. To clarify this question, we evaluated the apolipoprotein levels in 68 type I diabetic patients (39 +/- SD 14 years; duration of diabetes 13 +/- SD 8.4 years). By the analysis of fluorescein angiography we have classified diabetic retinopathy as follows: absent retinopathy (AR, n = 23), minimal retinopathy (MR, n = 16), exudative retinopathy (ER, n = 15), proliferative retinopathy (PR, n = 14). For all patients we measured: total, LDL- and HDL-cholesterol (T-CH, LDL-CH, HDL-CH), apolipoproteins A and B (Apo A and B), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1). The mean age of the patients with ER (47 +/- SD 14 years) was greater than those with MR (36 +/- SD 15 years) or AR (33 +/- SD 13 years) (p less than 0.05). Significant differences within groups were not found for relative body weight, daily insulin dose, FPG, HbA1% (analysis of variance, ANOVA). The groups differed between each other with regard to T-CH, LDL-CH and HDL-CH/LDL-CH ratio (T-cholesterol: AR 186 +/- SD 34, MR 191 +/- SD 32, ER 212 +/- SD 52, PR 215 +/- SD 41 mg/dl; LDL-cholesterol: AR 124 +/- SD 28, MR 122 +/- SD 18, ER 148 +/- SD 38, PR 145 +/- SD 33 mg/dl; HDL/LDL-cholesterol ratio: AR 0.38 +/- SD 0.1, MR 0.35 +/- SD 0.1, ER 0.30 +/- SD 0.1, PR 0.29 +/- SD 0.1). The total-CH levels increased and HDL-CH/LDL-CH ratio decreased along with the severity of the retinopathy.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

 Congenital fusion of the fourth and fifth metacarpals is described in a male infant and his maternal grandfather. Primary gonadal failure, which is present in the infant, has not been noted in previously reported cases. Madopar HBS and the decompensated phase of Parkinson disease

The most important current problem in the treatment of Parkinson disease in the so-called L-dopa long-term-treatment syndrome. We present here the results of our experience with Madopar HBS in the treatment of two groups of patients suffering from L-dopa long-term treatment syndrome. In the first study we replaced the standard Madopar with Madopar HBS. In the second study, after identifying the most disabling “off” periods, we added Madopar HBS to the previous treatment in such a way as to control these “off” phases. Our study suggests that Madopar HBS is useful in reducing typical fluctuation phenomena in the majority of patients.

Sommario Attualmente il problema più importante nel trattamento del morbo di Parkinson è costituito dalla cosiddetta “sindrome da trattamento cronico con L-dopa”. Presentiamo qui di seguito i risultati della nostra esperienza con Madopar HBS nel trattamento di 2 gruppi di pazienti affetti da tale sindrome. Nella prima parte dello studio abbiamo sostituito del tutto il Madopar standard con Madopar HBS, nella seconda parte, dopo aver identificato il periodo “off” maggiormente invalidante, abbiamo aggiunto Madopar HBS al trattamento precedente in modo che fosse efficace sulla fase off così identificata. Il nostro lavoro suggerisce che il Madopar HBS è utile nel ridurre le fluttuazioni motorie nella maggioranza dei pazienti parkinsoniani.

     

Defining critical periods for itraconazole-induced cleft palate, limb defects and axial skeletal malformations in the mouse

The main aim of the study was to identify the critical periods of susceptibility for itraconazole-mediated teratogenesis in the mouse. Pregnant ICR (CD-1) mice received a single oral administration of itraconazole at 50 mg/kg b.w., 150 mg/kg b.w. or 250 mg/kg b.w. on gestation day 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12. Control animals were administered with vehicle on gestation days 8-12. The gestational outcome was evaluated near term, on gestation day 18. Treatment-related morphological findings, as they can be evaluated by external, visceral and skeletal examination, mainly included cleft palate, limb defects and axial skeletal malformations. Cleft palate and limb defects resulted after single exposures between gestation days 9 and 11, with a tendency toward maximal response on gestation day 10. Significant incidences of axial skeletal defects were seen exclusively on gestation days 8 and 9. Exposure on gestation day 12 did not yield significant teratogenic responses. Cleft palate was the most sensitive teratogenic response, being the only developmental lesion associated to exposure to itraconazole at 150 mg/kg b.w.
