Contrast‐enhanced sonography (CEUS) examination permits identification of hemangioma of the liver in most cases. This method is particularly useful when the ultrasound pattern is atypical on standard grayscale examination. CEUS appearances suggestive of hemangioma are peripheral globular enhancement, progression of enhancement toward the center of the nodule, and persistence of enhancement in the late phase. We present seven cases of hemangioma, which were atypical on CEUS examination due to washout during the portal and late phases, resulting in a hypoenhanced appearance compared with the adjacent liver parenchyma. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An open design has been carried out by the authors comparing the efficacy and the tolerance of galactosoaminoglucuronoglycan sulfates (GAGs) with those of ibuprofen lysine in patients affected by osteoarthritis (OA). The experimental group included forty patients of both sexes, aged from 35 to 67 years, with diffuse OA. Ten patients were treated with GAGs administered orally (600-1200 mg/die) and ten patients with GAGs administered intramuscularly (50-100 mg/die); likewise for the ibuprofen therapy two subgroups were formed, such that ten patients were given the drug orally (1500-2500 mg/die) and ten patients had intramuscular therapy (400-800 mg/die). The treatment lasted 40 days. The parameters considered were: pain at rest, pain on pressure, pain on active movement and pain on passive movement. Tolerance was considered by carrying out some routinary laboratory tests and a careful clinical and anamnestic examination. At the end of the study, an improvement in all the clinical variables considered was found in both groups of patients, with no significant differences between the oral and the intramuscular administrations. With regard to tolerance, it must be noted that 10% of the patients in each of the two considered groups patients suffered from gastro-intestinal diseases (pain, nausea, pyrosis). The results achieved, therefore, confirm the efficacy and above all the good tolerance of GAGs in the treatment of OA, characteristics of particular importance for a drug designed for the therapy of a chronic pathology such as OA. 相似文献

This article reports the use of electrical stimulation to provide paraplegic patients with complete lesions of the spinal cord the ability to rise from sitting to standing, to maintain a standing position, and to walk with a reciprocal gait. Four channels of electrical stimulation are sufficient for synthesis of a simple reciprocal gait pattern in these patients. During the double-stance phase, knee extensor muscles of both knees are stimulated, providing sufficient support for the body. Only one knee extensor muscle group is excited during the single-stance phase. The swing phase of the contralateral lower extremity is accomplished by eliciting the synergistic flexor muscle response through electrical stimulation of afferent nerves. The transition from the double-stance phase to the swing phase is controlled by two hand switches used by the therapist or built into the handles of the walking frame or crutches for use by the patient. 相似文献

The estimation of patients gait in the field of rehabilitation is the starting point for an appropirate therapy decision and convenient prosthesis or orthosis choice. The measurement and estimation of human locomotion is increasingly being transferred to every day clinical use. In recent times many systems are intended for kinematic gait parameters measurements: stroboscopic photography, movie camera, TV picture analysis, TV signal analysis, chronocyclographical measurement, polarised light goniometer, the "Selspot" system, parallelgram goniometers, exoskeleton goniometers. In the paper the role of the computer in gait measurements is also determined. The problems of the choice of parameters to be measured, unique reference coordinate systems and normal gait pattern are encountered in this work. Finally two versions of pathological gait pattern estimation are described: clinical gait analysis and mathematical quantitative gait analysis. A focus of contemporary cancer therapeutic development is the targeting of both the transformed cell and the supporting cellular microenvironment. Cell migration is a fundamental cellular behavior required for the complex interplay between multiple cell types necessary for tumor development. We therefore developed a novel retroviral-based screening technology in primary human endothelial cells to discover genes that control cell migration. We identified the receptor tyrosine kinase Axl as a novel regulator of endothelial cell haptotactic migration towards the matrix factor vitronectin. Using small interfering RNA-mediated silencing and overexpression of wild-type or mutated receptor proteins, we show that Axl is a key regulator of multiple angiogenic behaviors including endothelial cell migration, proliferation, and tube formation in vitro. Moreover, using sustained, retrovirally delivered short hairpin RNA (shRNA) Axl knockdown, we show that Axl is necessary for in vivo angiogenesis in a mouse model. Furthermore, we show that Axl is also required for human breast carcinoma cells to form a tumor in vivo. These findings indicate that Axl regulates processes vital for both neovascularization and tumorigenesis. Disruption of Axl signaling using a small-molecule inhibitor will hence simultaneously affect both the tumor and stromal cell compartments and thus represents a unique approach for cancer therapeutic development. 相似文献

The incidence of obesity is increasing rapidly all over the world and results in numerous health detriments, including disruptions in reproduction. However, the mechanisms by which excess body fat interferes with reproductive functions are still not fully understood. After weaning, female rats were treated with a cafeteria diet or a chow diet (control group). Biometric and metabolic parameters were evaluated in adulthood. Reproductive parameters, including estradiol, progesterone, LH and prolactin during the proestrus afternoon, sexual behavior, ovulation rates and histological analysis of ovaries were also evaluated. Cafeteria diet was able to induce obesity in female rats by increasing body and fat pad weight, which resulted in increased levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL and induced insulin resistance. The cafeteria diet also negatively affected female reproduction by reducing the number of oocytes and preantral follicles, as well as the thickness of the follicular layer. Obese females did not show preovulatory progesterone and LH surges, though plasma estradiol and prolactin showed preovulatory surges similar to control rats. Nevertheless, sexual receptiveness was not altered by cafeteria diet. Taken together, our results suggest that the cafeteria diet administered from weaning age was able to induce obesity and reduce the reproductive capability in adult female rats, indicating that this obesity model can be used to better understand the mechanisms underlying reproductive dysfunction in obese subjects. 相似文献

Monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) is a member of the chemokine family of cytokines that mediate leukocyte chemotaxis. The potent and specific activation of monocytes by MCP-1 may mediate the monocytic infiltration of tissues in atherosclerosis and other inflammatory diseases. We have isolated cDNAs that encode two MCP-1-specific receptors with alternatively spliced carboxyl tails. Expression of the receptors in Xenopus oocytes conferred robust mobilization of intracellular calcium in response to nanomolar concentrations of MCP-1 but not to related chemokines. The MCP-1 receptors are most closely related to the receptor for the chemokines macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha and RANTES (regulated on activation, normal T expressed and secreted). The identification of the MCP-1 receptor and cloning of two distinct isoforms provide powerful tools for understanding the specificity and signaling mechanisms of this important chemokine. 相似文献
