The expression of parvalbumin-like immunoreactivity (PV-LIR) was examined in the mystacial representation within the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) of postnatal day 21 and adult rabbits. PV-LIR was expressed in a prominent vibrissa-like array of patches in layer IV despite the fact that barrels were indistinct in the cytoarchitecture. Each patch consisted of dense terminal-like PV-LIR and a preferential concentration of intensely labeled stellate neurons. Layer V contained scattered small and large intensely labeled basket cells. Layer Vb had a distinct layer of lightly labeled large pyramidal cells that received labeled basket cell terminations. Upper layer VI also contained patches of terminal-like PV-LIR that were in register with the overlying vibrissae pattern. These patches also contained a preferential distribution of labeled non-pyramidal cells as well as modified pyramidal cells. These results suggest that PV-LIR in rabbits delineates cortical modules composed of thalamorcotical afferents and inhibitory local circuits in the absence of a distinct barrel cytoarchitecure. In contrast, prior studies of rat SI cortex have revealed a distinct barrel cytoarchitecture but a uniform distribution of PV-LIR. The differences in PV-LIR between rodents and lagomorphs within the vibrissae representation in SI may be related to species differences in thalamic and local cortical circuits devoted to the whisker sense. 相似文献

The chemical warfare agent, sulphur mustard (SM), is a potent blistering agent in man. Skin exposure can produce partial-thickness burns which take up to three months to heal. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of early laser ablation as a means of accelerating this exceptionally slow rate of healing. Four circular partial-thickness SM burns were induced on the dorsum of nine large white pigs (under general anaesthesia). At 72 h post-exposure, three burns per animal were ablated with a single pass of an UltraPulse 5000C CO(2) laser, at a fluence of 5-6 J cm(-2). All the burns were dressed with silver sulphadiazine and a semi-occlusive dressing. At one, two and three weeks post-surgery three animals were culled and all lesions excised for histological analysis. Burn depth was confirmed and measurements of the radii of regenerative epithelium were performed allowing the area of the zone of re-epithelialisation in each lesion to be calculated. Laser-treated lesions showed a significant increase (350%) in healing rates compared to controls (p<0.005). At two weeks, the laser-treated sites were 95% healed in comparison with control sites (28% healed). These data suggest that laser ablation may be effective in the treatment of partial-thickness SM-induced skin injury. 相似文献

Background Significant tumor downstaging has been achieved in patients with localized gastric or gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma by induction
chemotherapy and preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CTX–CTXRT). However, the influence of CTX–CTXRT on operative morbidity and
mortality has not yet been clarified. The aim of the present study was to document the frequency and nature of morbidity and
mortality after surgery combined with CTX–CTXRT, and identify factors predictive of postoperative complications in patients
with localized gastric or gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma.
Methods A prospectively collected database on 71 consecutive patients who underwent CTX–CTXRT at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center between
January 1997 and August 2004 was reviewed. Postoperative morbidity and mortality were investigated, and risk factors for overall
complications were identified by multivariate logistic regression analysis.
Results Overall morbidity and mortality rates were 38.0% (27 patients) and 2.8% (2 patients), respectively. Age greater than 60 years
[relative risk 11.3 (95% confidence interval 2.50–50.6)] and body mass index (BMI) of 26 kg/m2 or above [relative risk 4.08 (95% confidence interval 1.08–15.4)] were significant risk factors for overall complications.
Conclusions CTX–CTXRT can be performed safely with an acceptable operative morbidity and a low operative mortality rate in patients with
gastric or gastroesophageal cancer, with careful consideration of added risk associated with age and obesity. 相似文献

In previous reports, we described the experimental development of a hypocholinergic state in rats following the total replacement of dietary choline by an artificial isostere, N-aminodeanol (NADe). NADe shares most of the physicochemical and biochemical characteristics of choline (Ch) but is utilized less efficiently in pathways leading to the formation of both acetylcholine and phospholipids. This experimental model mimics many of the features of human degenrative dementias. We now discuss the behavioral and physiological effects of restoring a normal diet after the hypocholinergic state has become well established. The procedure by which that state was induced has been described in detail in earlier publications. After replacing Ch in the diets of weanling rats for 270 days, NADe replaced 70-85% of the phospholipid-bound Ch in plasma, brain, and peripheral tissue. When dietary NADe was removed and Ch was restored in the diet, NADe disappeared and plasma and erythrocyte (RBC) choline levels returned to normal within 30-60 days. Quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB) binding showed that muscarinic receptors continued to be depressed in animals remaining on the NADe diet, but returned to control levels in the reversal group. There were no differences in cholinesterase activity among the three treatments. Choline acetyltransferase activity returned to control levels, while continuing to be lower in the NADe animals. Liver lipids were elevated in the latter and not significantly different in the control and reversal groups. Among physiological functions, body weight increased more rapidly in the reversal group than in animals continuing on the NADe diet. Brain weights of the reversal animals were significantly greater than those of animals not reversed, but less than controls. Core body temperatures did not differ from controls at any time during the reversal period. Behaviorally, nociceptive thresholds indicative of sensory-reflexive and sensory-perceptual responses remained significantly below normal, that is, a hyperalgesic state. Reversal animals also remained hyperactive and displayed memory significantly poorer than those on the normal diet, that is, no improvement over animals continuing on NADe. In general, the results suggest that behavioral losses induced by NADe reflect persisting changes in the CNS, despite essentially complete recovery of biochemical parameters. OBJECTIVE: To describe washing machine related injuries in children in the United States. METHODS: Injury data for 496 washing machine related injuries documented by the Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and death certificate data files were analyzed. Gender, age, diagnosis, body part injured, disposition, location and mechanism of injury were considered in the analysis of data. RESULTS: The upper extremities were most frequently injured in washing machine related injuries, especially with wringer machines. Fewer than 10% of patients required admission, but automatic washers accounted for most of these and for both of the deaths. Automatic washer injuries involved a wider range of injury mechanism, including 23 children who fell from the machines while in baby seats. CONCLUSIONS: Though most injuries associated with washing machines are minor, some are severe and devastating. Many of the injuries could be avoided with improvements in machine design while others suggest a need for increased education of potential dangers and better supervision of children if they are allowed access to areas where washing machines are operating. Furthermore, washing machines should only be used for their intended purpose. Given the limitations of educational efforts to prevent injuries, health professionals should have a major role in public education regarding these seemingly benign household appliances. 相似文献

This study examined the acquisition of verb particles and prepositions in language-impaired, language-matched, and age-matched preschool children. A videotape experimental task, in which subjects viewed and described brief action sequences, was implemented. The videotape task included particle, preposition, full noun phrase, and pronoun noun phrase items for six different particle/preposition words. Primary results indicated that the use of verb particles constituted a particularly challenging linguistic task for the language-impaired subjects relative to both their age- and language-matched peers. These results suggest multiple sources of difficulty for language-impaired children in the acquisition of grammatical form classes.
