Bioassay-guided isolation of anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive principles from a folk remedy, Rhododendron ponticum L. leaves

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Rhododendron ponticum L. (Ericaceae) is used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and to alleviate rheumatic pain and against toothache in Turkish traditional medicine.     

A New Approach for Decreasing Postoperative Peritoneal Adhesions: Preventing Peritoneal Trauma with Soybean Oil

Background: Covering peritoneal surfaces with soybean oil may decrease peritoneal adhesions by preventing peritoneal trauma. Method(s): Forty female albino Wistar rats were divided into four equal groups. In Group 1, soybean oil only (0.1 ml) was injected into the peritoneal cavity. In Group 2, an untreated adhesion model was generated. In Group 3, an adhesion model was generated, followed by covering the area with soybean oil (0.1 ml). In Group 4, the area was first covered with soybean oil (0.1 ml) followed by generation of an adhesion model. All rats were sacrificed on postoperative day 10, and adhesions were scored. Results: The mean macroscopic adhesion scores in Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 0.0 ± 0.0, 2.90 ± 0.21, 1.90 ± 0.94, and 0.50 ± 0.71, respectively. The Group 4 score differed significantly from that of Group 2 (p <. 001), but was not different from that of Group 1 or 3 (p >. 05). Discussion: Soybean oil can effectively decrease adhesion formation if applied before peritoneal trauma.     

Behcet’s Disease: Treatment of Popliteal Pseudoaneurysm by an Endovascular Stent Graft Implantation

Behçet disease is a multisystemic chronic autoimmune process that can be responsible for some vascular lesions, in addition to its typical dermatologic lesions. Arterial pseudoaneurysm formation can be diagnosed in this group of patients and generally surgery is indicated. In this report, we discuss an alternative endovascular intervention and its advantages. An endovascular stent graft was placed in the popliteal artery pseudoaneurysm of a 37-year-old male with Behçet disease. Early results of this procedure are good thus far. Implantation of an endovascular stent graft, an alternative modality in the treatment of pseudoaneurysms, can result in a shorter hospital stay and a significantly shorter period before returning to normal life. General anesthesia and surgical dissection are avoided, thus diminishing morbidity.     

Importance of TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand in pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis

Introduction  

Although interstitial cystitis is an inflammatory disease, its etiopathogenesis is not clearly understood. The objective of the present study is to investigate the distribution of TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and its receptors in bladder biopsy samples of patients diagnosed with interstitial cystitis and the role of TRAIL in the pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis.

Deficiency of a New Protein Associated with Cardiac Syndrome X; Called Adropin

The pathophysiology of cardiac syndrome X (CSX) is still unclear, but most patients with CSX have endothelial dysfunction. It has been shown that adropin uniquely effects the regulation of endothelial function. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the role of adropin in CSX. Eighty‐six consecutive cardiac syndrome X‐diagnosed patients and 86 age‐sex matched healthy subjects were enrolled into the study. Serum adropin levels, nitrite/nitrate levels were measured in each subject. The adropin levels were significantly lower in patients with CSX than healthy subjects (1.7 ± 0.8 ng/mL and 3.4 ± 1.8 ng/mL, respectively; P < 0.001). The BMI values of patients with CSX were significantly higher than control subjects (28.1 ± 2.4 kg/m² and 26.0 ± 3.7 kg/m², respectively; P < 0.001). Plasma nitrite/nitrate levels were lower in patients with CSX than control subjects (15.9 ± 1.6   μmol/L vs. 25.4 ± 2.8 μmol/L, respectively; P < 0.001), and they have a significantly positive correlation with plasma adropin levels (r = 0.463, P < 0.001). In the multiple linear regression analysis, nitrite/nitrate levels, BMI, and adropin were found to be independent risk factors for CSX. A ROC curve is used to identify the ability of adropin levels to predict the cardiac syndrome X. The area under the ROC curve was 0.854 for adropin levels (P = 0.0001). The sensitivity and specificity values of adropin levels were 90.7 and 70.9%, respectively (cut‐off value 2.73). In conclusion, lower serum adropin levels were associated with CSX. Adropin is an independent risk factor for CSX.     

Reduction Mammaplasty Using Bipedicled Dermoglandular Flaps and Free-Nipple Transplantation

Background  

Secondary revisions due to deflation, flattening, and ptosis have been the major concerns after free-nipple breast reduction procedures. This study used a new modification of the standard technique known as the “bipedicled dermoglandular flap method” to reduce reoperation rates.
