Inhibition of antigen-induced contractions of ileum segments and lung parenchymal strips of actively sensitized guinea pigs by different anti-allergic agentsin vitro

Different types, of anti-allergic agents have been compared for their ability to inhibit the antigen-induced contraction of isolated lung parenchymal strips and ilea of guinea pigs. Extremely low concentrations of the lipoxygenase inhibitor NDGA inhibit the contraction of the lung parenchymal strips and higher concentrations block the ileal phase II-contraction (both predominantly caused by the developing SRS-A), but do not inhibit ileal phase I-contraction (caused by released histamine). The H₁-antihistamine clemastine predominantly antagonizes phase I of the ileum contraction, and the anti-allergic drug oxatomide reduces all three types of contraction. The degranulation inhibitor DSCG does not influence the contraction of the lung strip, but produces a slight inhibition of both ileal contractions. The PAF-antagonist BN 52021 influences these three contractions in the opposite way to DSCG. As these various types of anti-allergic agents influence these three contractions in a different manner, the models can be used for judging the mechanism of action of a new anti-allergic compound.     

Non-Traumatic Perforation of Gastric Ulcer in a Hiatal Hernia to the Pericardium

ABSTRACT A patient with ulcer in a hiatal hernia with perforation to the pericardial sac is reported. The symptoms and signs of non-traumatic perforation from esophagus or stomach to the pericardium or heart are described on the basis of a brief review of the literature. A prominent feature of our patient was long-standing pain in the left shoulder. We suggest that this symptom may be a warning of threatening pericardial perforation.     

Single-acquisition chemical-shift imaging of a binary system with use of stimulated echoes

A method for separating binary chemical-shift components with a single image data acquisition by means of stimulated echoes is demonstrated. With a strategy analogous to the modified Dixon method, three stimulated echoes were acquired to form three complex images. In each of the images, the complex pixel intensities were imparted, by design of the pulse sequence, with a phase factor carrying chemical-shift or field inhomogeneity information. With these three images, true fat/water separation can be obtained in biologic tissues. Studies at high field strength (4.7 T) on a toluene phantom, a pseudo-binary chemical-shift system, were used to evaluate the applicability of the method. Its clinical feasibility was demonstrated on a healthy human subject in a 0.6-T whole-body imaging system.
