The effect of sampling site and proximity of malignant tumor on the relative fatty acid composition of human breast adipose tissue was studied in 10 cases of breast cancer. The four anatomic quadrants of breast did not statistically significantly differ from each other in relation to any of the 30 fatty acids studied. Proximity of the malignant tumor did not affect the relative fatty acid composition of fat when compared with more distant sampling sites. Representative samples of breast adipose tissue for fatty acid composition analysis can be obtained from tissue adjacent to the tumor. 相似文献

Time parenting was compared for new mothers and fathers in a sample of 182 dual‐earner families. Parenting domains included positive engagement, responsibility, routine child care, and accessibility. Time diaries captured parents' time use over a 24‐hour workday and nonworkday when infants were age 3 and 9 months. Parents were highly involved with their infants. Mothers were more involved than fathers in positive engagement and routine child care on days and at each assessment, and allocated more available time on workdays to these domains than fathers, with one exception. Fathers and mothers allocated similar shares of available workday time to positive engagement at 9 months. Greater equity in responsibility and accessibility was found; mothers spent more, and a greater share of, parenting time in responsibility than fathers on the 9‐month workday only, and were more accessible on the 3‐month workday only. Implications for parents in today's diverse families are discussed. 相似文献

Background: The incidence of obesity is rising, and an increasing number of obese patients are admitted to surgical intensive care units (SICUs). However, it is not clear whether obesity is an independent risk factor for increased morbidity and mortality in SICU patients. We examined the effect of obesity on morbidity and mortality in patients admitted to the SICU in this study. Method: We reviewed prospectively acquired SICU data in normal and obese patients with an SICU length of stay >24 hours. Comparability of the groups was assessed using a χ2 test or Fisher exact test, as appropriate, for categorical variables and analysis of variance (ANOVA) or the Kruskal‐Wallis test, as appropriate, for continuous variables. Results: Of the 1792 consecutive patients evaluated, 711 had a normal body mass index (BMI), and 993 were either preobese or obese. There was no statistically significant difference across the 5 BMI groups with respect to any of the 3 comorbidity indices (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III [APACHE III], Simplified Acute Physiology Score, or Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score). There was no statistically significant difference in the intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay and hospital length of stay or time‐to‐ICU mortality (log‐rank test P = .054) among the 5 BMI groups. A Cox regression analysis and backward elimination algorithm selected APACHE III to be the most important explanatory variable for survival time. Conclusion: Obesity does not affect the mortality of patients admitted to the SICU. We conclude that obesity cannot be used as an independent predictive mortality outcome variable in patients admitted to the SICU. 相似文献

A high percentage of human tumors is reported to be related to dietary habits. One way to improve the nutritional impact is to increase the intake of protective factors, such as inhibitors of DNA damage and other types of anticarcinogens. Specific strains of lactic acid bacteria used to ferment milk are promising candidates that may be antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic. We have studied the antimutagenicity of 10 isolated strains of beneficial lactic acid bacteria. Four types of fermented milk products were also studied for their protective properties. The effect of these bacteria on the yield of revertants induced by nitrosated beef extract was investigated in the Salmonella typhimurium mutagenicity assay. Eight of 10 isolated Lactobacillus strains reduced the yield of his+ revertants almost back to the levels of the untreated controls. Different fermented fresh yogurts containing viable bacteria (probably Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus or Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria) showed protective effects as well. The degree of suppressing revertants was independent of the yogurt's fat content. In contrast, yogurt products that had been heat treated were not inhibitory. The other fresh fermented milk products (e.g., buttermilk, kefir, and “Dickmilch”) were not antimutagenic in this study. The results imply that some bacteria used in milk processing have an antimutagenic potential and that this property is specific for the bacterial strain. 相似文献

Dimethylnitrosamine (NDMA), diethylnitrosamine (NDEA), methylbenzylnitros‐amine, and a new N‐nitroso compound, N‐3‐methylbutyl‐N‐1‐methylacetonylnitrosamine (NMAMBA), were found in cornbread that was inoculated with Fusarium monilif orme and underwent an incubation and the addition of a small amount of NaNO2. The carcinogenicity of NMAMBA was shown by the induction of forestomach carcinomas and liver tumors in mice and rats. Another new nitrosamine, N‐2‐methylpropyl‐N‐methylacetonylnitrosamine, was isolated in millet and wheat flour after similar treatment. Some species of fungi not only can reduce nitrates to nitrites but also can increase the amount of secondary amines in the moldy foods and pro vide favorable conditions for the synthesis of nitrosamines. Some fungi may utilize primary amines to synthesize nitrosamines in appropriate culture mediums. Furthermore, the cornmeal may naturally contain trace amounts of nitrosamines, as detected by a gas chromatography/thermoenergy analyzer. Prolonged feeding of F. moniliforme‐ inoculated cornbread alone also induced the development of forestomach carcinoma in rats. This indicates the occurrence of potential carcinogens, perhaps certain Fusarium mycotoxins, in the moldy cornbread in addition to the carcinogenic nitrosamines. Another nitroso compound, Roussin red methylester (di‐μ‐methanethiolatotetranitrosodiiron) was found in pickled vegetables that are eaten daily in the Linxian (China) area. Roussin Red may provide NO‐ 2 ions, which would react readily with secondary amines to form nitrosamines. Possibly this compound is a natural tumor promoter and is able to induce epithelial hyperplasia of the upper digestive tract and forestomach papilloma in treated mice. Also, trace amounts of NDMA, NDEA, and some other nitrosamines were found in the extract of pickled vegetables. 相似文献
