Voltammetric determination of blood angiotensin II level

A rapid procedure for determining angiotensin II in the blood by inverse voltammetry using a TA-2 device (Tekhnoanalit Company, Tomsk) with a graphite electrode has been developed. The results of analyses using the proposed technique agree with the clinical data. Role of birds of prey as carriers and spreaders of Cryptococcus neoformans and other zoonotic yeasts.

In the last 20 years, cases of human cryptococcosis, have increased in immunocompromised patients. In several instances, the cases have been associated with the exposure of the patients to bird droppings. In order to investigate birds of prey as potential carriers and spreaders of Cryptococcus neoformans and other yeasts of importance in human infections, 182 swab samples were collected from the cloacae of several species of birds of prey (Group I) and 32 faecal samples from aviaries in which the birds were housed (Group II). Samples were also taken from digestive tract of 60 dead birds (Group III). A total of 454 samples were cultured from which 215 colonies of yeastlike fungi were recovered and identified. Cryptococcusneoformans var. grubii was isolated from three cloacae samples (4.8%) collected from Falco tinnunculus and from one sample (3.1%) obtained from Buteo buteo, as well as from samples collected at the aviaries in which these birds were kept. Overall, 18 samples (9.9%) from Group I, 13 (40.6%) from Group II, 12 crops (20%), three proventriculi (5%) and 12 cloacae (20%) from Group III yielded positive cultures for yeasts. The results indicate that birds of prey and in particular, F. tinnunculus and B. buteo, may act as carriers and spreaders of C. neoformans and other zoonotic yeasts.     

Pedicled deltoid hatchet flap for treatment of pressure sore at the shoulder

Whereas decubitus ulcer in the back or hip region is a common entity in plegic or elderly patients, the occurrence in the lateral shoulder region is seldom seen. However, resulting from continuous lateral decubitus positioning or limited compliance by the patient, pressure sores may occur in almost any region of the body, but predominately, they arise in acral zones with underlying bone prominences. The deltoid area is such an anatomically critical region, especially if the underlying deltoid muscle is paralyzed. The transposition of a pedicled deltoid flap, slightly modified as a hatchet flap, is described for cover of a decubitus ulcer in the deltoid region in a paraplegic male. Although utilization of the deltoid flap as a free flap is an established procedure for selected indications [Russell et al. (1985) Extremity reconstruction using the free deltoid flap. 83例6个月以下婴儿室间隔缺损的外科治疗

目的 总结外科手术治疗小婴儿期室间隔缺损(VSD)的临床经验.方法 对2000-2005年83例＜6月龄VSD患儿,年龄12 d至6(4.3±1.2)个月,体重3～6.5(5.1±0.8)kg.膜周部VSD 74例,干下型VSD 8例,膜周部并肌部VSD1例.术前中、重度肺动脉高压69例(83.1%).所有患儿均在浅低温体外循环下手术.结果 全组手术死亡4例,手术病死率为4.8%.术后主要并发症为肺动脉高压危象、肺部感染和心律失常.结论 随着麻醉、体外循环、手术技术和围术期监护处理措施的进步,在小婴儿期施行VSD的外科手术已成为安全的治疗方式.术后对肺高压的处理是手术成功的关键.     

Tissue microarray analysis of EGFR and erbB2 copy number changes in ovarian tumors

The objective of this study was to assess the implication of copy number changes of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and erbB2 genes in the etiology and progression of ovarian tumors. In our study, we used the highly reliable method of fluorescent in situ hybridization, applied on tissue microarray, containing 1006 ovarian tumors from different malignancy, histologic type and grade, and tumor stage, in order to analyze the correlations between gene copy number changes and tumor phenotype. We established copy number changes of erbB2 in 15.30% of malignant ovarian tumors-8.16% amplifications and 7.14% gains. The frequency of EGFR copy number changes was 10.67%-3.65% amplifications and 7.02% gains. EGFR gains occurred with approximately the same frequency in malignant (7.02%), low malignant potential (8.33%), and benign (7.19%) ovarian tumors. ErbB2 amplification was associated with clear cell type of ovarian cancer (P < 0.04). No amplification of EGFR and erbB2 genes was established in tumors with low malignant potency and in benign tumors. Regarding cancer phenotype, there was no statistically significant association between erbB2 copy number changes and histologic grade as well as tumor stage of ovarian cancer. EGFR gains are early events in ovarian tumorigenesis. Our results showed similar frequencies of EGFR gains in different grade tumors, while EGFR amplification increased from grades 1 to 2 to 3.
