Cerebrospinal fluid beta-endorphin in congenital insensitivity to pain

Spontaneously elevated nociceptive threshold levels were markedly diminished after Naloxone injections in 4 patients with congenital insensitivity to pain. This finding suggested the hypothesis of a relation between congenital insensitivity to pain and permanent hyperfunction of an endomorphinic system. Radio-immunoassay of CSF beta-endorphin was performed in all 4 cases. The normal or only slightly elevated levels cannot explain electrophysiologic findings, but as a function of the multiplicity of endogenous opioid systems, hyperactivity of another endomorphinic system cannot be excluded. Other hypotheses may also be proposed.     

Body size of young Australians aged five to 16 years

In 1983-1984, 4578 Perth primary and secondary schoolchildren were studied. The selected sample was broadly representative of the ethnic groups that make up the Perth population and of the different social ranks within that population. The age, sex, weight, height, country of birth of the child and the parents, and occupation of the father were recorded for each subject. Weight, height and body mass index (BMI) increased with age. Age and sex were the most important determinants of body size. However, children of lower social rank and those with a southern European background were over-represented among the overweight children (greater than the 90th centile for BMI), particularly in adolescence. Children with an Asian background who were 11 years of age and younger were over-represented among the underweight children (less than or equal to the 10th centile for BMI). Results from this study indicate a continuing, though small (1.5 cm to 1.6 cm), secular increase in height over the past 13 to 14 years.     

Role of the health care supervisor in management of a therapeutic milieu.

The health care supervisor responsible for establishing a therapeutic milieu within a traditional hospital organization will have greater success if these suggested management strategies are employed. Decentralizing, improving organizational communication, and clarifying interdisciplinary role relationships are the strategies that support the integration of differing organizational approaches to management.     

Studies of the blood lipid peroxide status and vitamin E levels in patients with chronic active hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease

As free radicals and lipid peroxidation are involved in the pathogenesis of different inflammatory diseases of the liver, the blood malondialdehyde content, the activity or quantity of free radical eliminating enzymes and the natural antioxidant, vitamin E serum level has been studied in ten patients with chronic active hepatitis and in six subjects with alcoholic liver disease. Thirty healthy volunteers served as controls. The serum malondialdehyde/thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and its concentrations increased significantly in both hepatitis groups. The superoxide dismutase content was also raised in the patients' sera. The serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity was decreased in both groups, while the red blood cell GSH-Px showed a significantly lower activity in the alcoholic hepatitis patients. Serum catalase activity and vitamin E levels in both types of chronic hepatitis were not significantly different from the healthy controls.     

Comparative analysis of the effect of gestagens,antiestrogencytostatics, and androstenes on the viability of tumor and normal cells

The hormonal compound with the highest cytostatic activity against MCF-7 tumor cells (human breast cancer, BC) and the lowest activity against normal cells (rat skin fibroblasts) was sought among gestagens, androstenes, and antiestrogencytostatics. It was found that antiestrogencytostatics and androstenes had the highest cytostatic activity against tumor cells whereas gestagens and antiestrogencytostatics were least active against fibroblasts. Studies of the activity of the hormonal compounds in combination with doxorubicin on the viability of MCF-7 and rat skin fibroblasts found that all investigated compounds with the exception of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) intensify the cytostatic activity of doxorubicin against tumor cells, the greatest effect seen for antiestrogencytostatics.
