It has been hypothesized that cerebral lateralization of function enhances cognitive performance. Evidence was found in birds and fish. However, recent research in humans did not support this hypothesis. We aimed to replicate and extend these findings for single- and dual-task performance in an ecologically relevant task. We combined a word generation task which is assumed to be primarily processed in the left hemisphere with a driving task which is assumed to be primarily processed in the right hemisphere. For each task the individual strength and direction of hemispheric lateralization was assessed by using functional transcranial Doppler sonography (fTCD). For each subject (36 right-handed, 35 nonright-handed) performance was measured in the two single-tasks and in the dual-task condition. On average, subjects showed a left hemisphere bias for the word generation task, a right hemisphere bias for the driving task and dual-task interference. Within subjects, lateralization of language and driving were statistically independent.In accordance with earlier studies, the results show no indication of a positive effect of strength of lateralization on performance in single-tasks or dual-task efficiency. We also found no advantage of a typical compared to an atypical or a contralateral compared to an ipsilateral lateralization pattern. In right-handers, but not in nonright-handers, we even found a negative relationship between strength of lateralization and dual-task efficiency for atypically lateralized subjects. This further supports the suggestion that lateralization does not enhance cognitive performance in humans.  相似文献

Factor XI is a component of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation. A deficiency of factor XI is associated with a mild to moderate bleeding disorder especially from tissues with a high local fibrinolytic activity. In contrast, high levels of factor XI are a risk factor for venous thrombosis. The recent finding that factor XI can be activated by thrombin led to a revised model of coagulation. In this model the primary thrombin generation that results in fibrin formation takes place via the extrinsic pathway. Additional thrombin generation takes place inside the fibrin clot via the intrinsic pathway after the activation of factor XI by thrombin. High concentrations of thrombin are formed that are necessary for the activation of thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI). Activated TAFI protects the fibrin clot against lysis. The role of factor XI in hemostasis can therefore be seen as a combination of procoagulant and antifibrinolytic actions. The new insights in the role of factor XI in coagulation and fibrinolysis may lead to new strategies for the treatment of thrombotic disorders.  相似文献

The crystalline form of methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth (crystal methamphetamine) or ICE, is a highly‐addictive and powerful stimulant. Users of crystal meth often require emergency care, and are associated with a substantial burden of care by emergency care providers. The aim of the present qualitative study was to explore health professionals’ experiences of providing care for patients affected by ICE who presented to the emergency department (ED). Nine semistructured interviews were conducted. The major theme, ‘staying safe’, was revealed, in which participants described their experiences of being exposed to potentially unsafe situations, and their responses to challenging behaviours, including aggression. The findings highlight the need for ED staff to understand the nature of ICE use and its adverse impact on the mental and physical health of users. Furthermore, it is clear that establishing and maintaining safety in the emergency care setting is of utmost importance, and should be a priority for health‐care managers.  相似文献

Platelet Factor VIII-related antigen (VIIIR:Ag) represents a significant proportion of the total circulating VIIIR:Ag pool. However, its participation in the events of primary hemostasis has not been shown. We now report that platelet-contained VIIIR:Ag is released from platelets by collagen, ADP and thrombin. The concentrations of these agonists, required for VIIIR:Ag release, are the same or lower than those required for release of serotonin, lysosomal enzymes, or fibrinogen. This release has the features of an energy-dependent secretory response because it is blocked by the metabolic inhibitors, antimycin A and 2-deoxy-D-glucose. The electrophoretic characteristics of the VIIIR:Ag released by collagen and ADP are similar to those of plasma VIIIR:Ag. However, thrombin-released platelet VIIIR:Ag differs from that of plasma in that the less anodal forms are relatively depleted. These differences do not appear to be the result of proteolytic degradation of platelet-derived VIIIR:Ag, but may reflect interactions between specific molecular forms of VIIIR:Ag and the platelet membrane. These studies suggest mechanisms by which platelet-contained VIIIR:Ag may contribute to the primary events of hemostasis.  相似文献
