The immigrant population continues to increase in Norway, and Somali immigrants and their descendants are presently the largest non-Western group. We have limited knowledge about the health status in this population. The aim of this study was to assess self-perceived health status among Somalis in Norway.
Method
We used data from a study assessing risk factors for lifestyle diseases among Somali immigrants in Oslo, which was conducted between December 2015 and October 2016, among men and women aged 20–73 who were living in the Sagene borough in Oslo.
Results
The study population included 221 participants (112 females and 110 males). Overall, 78% of the participants (70% of females and 86% males) rated their health status as good or very good. Women had poorer self-reported health (p?=?0.003) than men. Being unemployed and having diabetes, stress, and sleeping problems were associated with poor self-reported health, but time lived in Norway, education level, Norwegian language proficiency, and high BMI were not significantly associated. Around 2/3 of the participants reported being physically inactive, while around half reported walking or moving more than 30 min per day. Self-reported chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension were 5% and 9% respectively.
Conclusion
This study has shown the different patterns of self-reported health status among Somali immigrants in Norway, as associated with gender, age, psychosocial conditions, and employment status. Further research is needed to explain why Somali women in Norway have poorer self-reported health than men. The findings from this study should provide direction to healthcare providers for improving health among immigrants, for example through implementing a community-driven and culturally appropriate lifestyle intervention program.
BackgroundHepatic artery thrombosis (HAT), a serious complication after orthotopic liver transplantation, almost always leads to morbidity and mortality without urgent revascularization or retransplantation, especially if HAT occurs within a few days after transplantation.Case PresentationHerein we describe a case report of an orthotopic liver transplantation patient surviving without hepatic artery flow due to HAT on postoperative day 1. Reanastomosis, thrombectomy, and intra-arterial thrombolysis were performed, but only retrograde arterial flow by Doppler ultrasound, not by angiography, could be demonstrated in the hepatic artery. This case report is in compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki and the Declaration of Istanbul.ConclusionBased on the evidence from this patient, we believe that patients with failed revascularization can experience a long-term survival with conservative treatment. Retransplantation should be evaluated based on laboratory findings because graft function in individual patients can recover. 相似文献
Studies of families caring for persons with dementia living at home often reflect feelings of being forgotten and abandoned by the authorities to shoulder the responsibility for care-giving. This has increased interest in how formal services can better support these families. This article analyses how health and social care professionals envision the needs of families of persons with dementia living in the community. It also describes the contributions of the formal care system to these families. The study design was qualitative. It involved interviews with professionals (N = 20), field observations from the settings where they worked, and public documents addressing care-giving for people with dementia. Data were analysed using the framework method. The findings reflected how those providing services to persons experiencing cognitive changes mainly understood the services as specialised. They focused on the diagnosis and treatment of the individual with dementia. They considered other aspects of care, such as attending to practical issues of daily life, to be a private matter, for which the family was responsible. In later stages of dementia, specialised day programs become available, offering rehabilitation to motivate positive daily living—for both the person experiencing dementia and family-centred supporters. Professionals in the field described primary care, community-based healthcare and home care services as poorly equipped to support these families. Participants acknowledged that families were often under a lot of stress and might need more support earlier in the illness. However, they saw themselves as powerless. Towards the end of the data collection, services were being re-designed to emphasise the role of primary care. In light of its holistic and family-centred approach, primary care may be well placed to integrate relational understanding of living with dementia and specialised knowledge of dementia treatment. 相似文献
Middle-aged men with abdominal obesity were treated in a double-blind study with moderate doses of transdermal preparations of testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), or placebo. This resulted in moderately elevated T concentrations and marked decreases in follicle stimulating and luteinizing hormones in the group treated with T, while the DHT group showed elevated DHT, markedly lower T values, and less diminution of gonadotropin concentrations. In the group treated with T visceral fat mass decreased (measured by computerized tomography) without significant changes in other depot fat regions. Lean body mass did not change. In the group treated with T, glucose disposal rate, measured with the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp method, was markedly augmented. Plasma triglycerides, cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose concentrations as well as diastolic blood pressure decreased. There were no such changes in the DHT or placebo treatment groups. The men treated with T reported increased well-being and energy. In none of the groups did prostate volume, specific prostate antigen concentration, genito-urinary history, or urinary flow measurement change. It is suggested that supplementation of abdominal obese men with moderate doses of T might have several beneficial effects. 相似文献
BACKGROUND/AIM: Cholecystokinin (CCK) stimulates secretion and evokes a hyperplastic response in the rat pancreas. The aims of this study were to measure the effect of chronic hyperCCKemia induced by pancreatico-biliary diversion (PBD) on pancreatic enzyme concentrations, on amylase secretion by dispersed acinar cells, and on the CCK-stimulated secretion of pancreatic juice in PBD-operated rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-five Sprague-Dawley male rats had either PBD or sham operation 4 weeks before sacrifice or additional experiments. In the first study, 25 rats (13 PBD and 12 sham-operated rats) were either freely fed or fasted overnight before sacrifice. The pancreas was dissected out, weighed and analyzed. In the second study, the rats (6 PBD and 7 sham-operated rats) were fasted overnight before pancreatic acini were prepared. Secretion of amylase during stimulation of acini with CCK-8S and carbachol was measured. In the third study (5 sham-operated and 4 PBD rats), the rats were fasted overnight before basal and CCK-stimulated secretion was measured in vivo. RESULTS: PBD-operated rats showed a threefold increase in pancreatic wet weight with increased contents of DNA, protein and water. The concentration of pancreatic amylase was 7-12% of that found in control animals. The concentrations of trypsin and lipase were also lowered. Stimulation of dispersed pancreatic acini with CCK-8S or carbachol resulted in secretion of amylase to a similar extent in PBD and sham-operated rats. There was no difference in the secretion of pancreatic juice in response to CCK, but although the output of amylase from PBD-operated rats increased with CCK, it remained at a low level throughout the study period. CONCLUSION: PBD evoked hyperplastic changes in the rat pancreas and decreased the concentrations of amylase, trypsin and lipase. However, the capacity of acinar cells to secrete amylase remained intact. The stimulated pancreatic secretion was not changed in volume, but the output of amylase was low in PBD-operated rats. The findings are consistent with the idea that the enlargement of the pancreas following PBD does not improve the secretory capacity. 相似文献
