PULMONARY OEDEMA FOLLOWING AIRWAY OBSTRUCTIN IN A PATIENT WITH HODGKIN'S DISEASE

We report a case of pulmonary oedema follwing airway obstructionin a patient who underwent biopsy of a tumo ur in volving theanterior mediastinum and neck. The occurrence of airway obstructionin patients with anterior mediastinal masses, and the pathogenesisof pulmonary oedema occurring in association with airway obstruction,are discussed.     

Surgical tactics in clotted hemothorax in patients with combined chest injuries

Based on the experience with treatment of 26 patients the authors recommend to use mainly conservative treatment with the intrapleural administration of fibrinolytic drugs. The method was used in 20 patients. All of them recovered.     

346. Die bedeutung von stenosen an gefä\verzweigungen. eine experimentelle untersuchung an der femoralisgabel unter besonderer berücksichtigung der indikation zur profundaplastik

Zusammenfassung In einem pulsatil mit Kochsalz durchströmten Modell der Femoralisgabel wurden Flussmessungen und Druckgradienten für Flussmengen von 170 bis 860 ml/min bei peripheren Widerständen von 232 bis 25 792 dyn s cm^–5 über dem Superficialis- und Profundaabgang bei Stenosen von 1 cm Länge und Querschnittsverminderungen von 0% bis 100% gemessen. Bei grossen Flussmengen (800–860 ml/min) und kleinem peripheren Widerstand (<640 dyn s cm^–5) lag die kritische Stenose am Profundaabgang bei 4,1 mm Durchmesser, für hohe periphere Widerstände (> 5 072 dyn s cm^–5) bei 2,6 mm; bei kleinen Flussmengen (<400 ml/min) betrug der kritische Durchmesser 1,8 mm. Der nicht stenosierte Profundaabgang stellte für keine der Versuchsbedingungen ein strömungsdynamisches Hindernis dar.     

Provision of immunisation--the Gazankulu experience

Following the outbreak of poliomyelitis in Gazankulu in 1982, the immunisation services in Gazankulu were thoroughly examined. As a result of this, a comprehensive immunisation policy for Gazankulu was accepted in November 1986. The broad aim of the policy is to provide effective immunisation to all Gazankulu residents against tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis and measles. A specific objective is that by the end of 1987, 85% of under-5s should have been vaccinated against these six diseases and by the end of 1990 this percentage should be 97%. The detailed strategies to reach these objectives are highlighted. Within the framework of the objectives, the policy allows different areas to formulate individual strategies. Programme monitoring and community involvement are two crucial aspects of the policy and these are discussed in detail. The early successes and difficulities in implementing this policy are discussed.     

Extracellular Enzyme Activities by Basidiobolus and Conidiobolus Isolates on Solid Media./Extrazelluläre Enzymaktivitäten bei Basidiobolus- und Condiobolus-Isólaten auf festen Medien

Summary: Fifty-seven isolates of Basidiobolus from reptiles and amphibians, and 7 other obtained from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) in Maryland were studied for their extracellular enzyme activities on solid media. The Conidiobolus isolates studied included 4 recovered from Nigerian soil and additional 4 obtained from the ATCC All these isolates produced active extracellular lipase and protease and failed to exhibit amylase, deoxyribonuclease and ribonuclease activities. The significance of the findings is discussed.
Zusammenfassung: Fünfundsiebzig Basidiobolus-Isolate aus Reptilien und Amphibien und sieben weitere aus der American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) in Maryland wurden auf Aktivtäten extrazellulärer Enzyme auf festen Medien untersucht Die untersuchten Conidiobolus-Isolate schlossen vier aus nigerianischen Böden und vier weitere aus der ATCC ein. Alle Isolate zeigten extrazellulär Lipase- und Proteaseaktivität Amylase-, Desoxyribonuclease- und Ribonucleaseaktivität war jedoch nicht nachzuweisen. Die Bedeutung dieser Befunde wird diskutiert.     

Female alcoholics. V: The relationship between family history of alcoholism and outcome 3-10 years after treatment

In a long-term follow-up study of 44 female alcoholics, a family history of alcoholism was related to younger age of onset of problem drinking, but did not necessarily imply a poorer outcome within this highly selected group of individuals. Alcoholism in father and his family was not related to either antisocial or borderline personality disorder nor outcome. However, alcoholism in mother and her family correlated with both borderline personality disorder and a significantly poorer outcome. The findings are discussed within different frames of reference, considering genetic mechanisms, psychodynamic factors and family systems theory.
