Frequency of constitutional chromosome alterations in patients with hematologic neoplasias

From 1978 to 1985 cytogenetic studies were performed on 718 patients with different hematologic diseases. Nine (1.25%) had a constitutional chromosome alteration. One patient had trisomy 21, four had balanced translocations and four had sex chromosome anomalies. Although the frequency of constitutional alterations was twice that seen in the newborn population, an analysis of these data and also from the literature shows a random association between constitutional chromosome alterations and hematologic neoplasias, except for patients with Down's syndrome.     

Drug treatment of HIV associated neuropsychiatric syndromes

Psychotropic drugs are frequently used to treat the wide range of neuropsychiatric syndromes that patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may develop. In order to administer these agents properly, physicians should take into account, among other factors, that: the central nervous system (CNS) of these patients is often impaired; they tend to suffer from one or more physical disorders; and they may be taking various other medications. The present paper reviews the clinical features and the general guidelines for administering neuroleptics, antidepressants, psychostimulants, benzodiazepines, opiates, lithium and carbamazepine in this group of patients, based on the literature and the authors' own clinical experience.     

Abordaje conservador del embarazo ectópico cervical

Cervical pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy with a high risk of hemorrhage. Early diagnosis is an important prognostic factor for survival and preserved fertility in these patients. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with cervical ectopic pregnancy in her seventh week of gestation. The therapeutic management was conservative and involved the combination of systemic and intra-amniotic methotrexate Because of the lower associated morbidity and mortality and the possibility of maintaining the patient’s fertility, conservative treatment is a viable therapeutic approach in cases such as that presented herein.     

Retamatrioside, a new flavonol triglycoside from Retama sphaerocarpa

A new flavonol triglycoside, retamatrioside (1), has been isolated from the aerial parts of Retama sphaerocarpa. The structure of 1 has been determined as rhamnazin 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->5)-[beta-D-apiofuranosyl(1-->2)]-al pha -L-arabinofuranoside, using spectroscopic methods.     

Paraneoplasic polyneuropathy with anti-amphiphysin antibodies

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes consist of a dysfunction of any part of the nervous system, in isolation or in combination, caused by a malign neoplasia, but not by the direct tissular or metastasic invasion of the tumour. Their pathogeny is explained by immunological mechanisms and they are characterised by the presence of high rates of antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. We present the case of a patient with a sensitive neuropathy that produced ataxia, and who suffered from a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the lung, in whom the search for antineuronal antibodies was positive for antiamphiphysin antibodies, supporting the diagnosis of paraneoplastic polyneuropathy.
