Background: Arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are crucial for neural and visual development after premature birth. Preterm infants usually require tube feeding (TF) until the achievement of adequate oral feeding skills; the impact of TF on DHA and AA delivery has not been investigated yet. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different TF techniques on the delivery of AA and DHA contained in human milk (HM). Methods: HM samples (65 mL each) were collected and divided into three 20‐mL aliquots. The remaining 5 mL served as baseline. Three TF techniques were simulated (1 for each aliquot): gravity bolus feeding (BF), 3‐hour continuous feeding using a horizontal feeding pump, and 3‐hour continuous feeding with the feeding pump angled at 45°. For horizontal continuous feeding (HCF) and 45° angled continuous feeding (ACF), aliquots delivered between 0 and 90 minutes (T1) and 91 and 180 minutes (T2) were collected separately. AA and DHA concentration was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and compared among the TF methods. DHA and AA delivery at T1 and T2 was also evaluated. Results: Fifty‐one simulated feeds were performed. DHA and AA amounts after BF and ACF did not differ significantly compared with baseline, whereas HCF resulted in significantly lower DHA and AA concentration. During T2, ACF delivered almost twice the DHA and AA amounts compared with T1. Conclusion: The delivery of HM AA and DHA is significantly affected by TF, with potential clinical implications. When BF is not tolerated, ACF might represent a feasible alternative to reduce TF‐related DHA and AA loss. 相似文献

Purpose To evaluate the effect of the hyperhomocysteinemia on pregnancy rate, implantation rate and abortion rate after IVF.
Method Data from a total of 48 infertile couples with hyperhomocysteinemia were prospectively collected for this study. All patients
underwent a standard down regulation protocol for ovarian stimulation. Oocytes recovery was performed at 36 h after hCG administration.
Embryo transfer took place at 48 h after insemination. The patients were matched in two groups that received or did not receive
therapy (group A and B respectively) to normalize homocysteine plasma level.
Results Pregnancy rate, implantation rate and abortion rate varied significantly (p ≤ 0.05) between the two groups. The number and quality of embryos transferred did not differ between the groups.
Conclusion The results suggest that hyperhomocysteinemia could affect IVF outcome 相似文献

Erythrocyte–exchange (EEX) has proven to be a very useful tool in sickle‐cell disease (SCD) patients either during acute painful crisis unresponsive to hydration and/or analgesia or as a prophylactic treatment in high risk patients in those who do not tolerate hydroxyurea (HU), with the aim of lowering HbS levels. EEX may be performed either by using continuous‐ or discontinuous flow devices, the former being of choice in children or in low‐weight patients. Thus, a low extracorporeal blood volume (EBV) could allow for a better and safer procedure management. In this study we compared EEX procedure performed with the recently released OPTIA device with EEX procedures performed using the COBE Spectra device (EBV 185 vs 270 mL, respectively). Twenty‐one EEX (4 as emergency treatment) were performed in 12 patients with the Spectra device and 25 (9 as emergency treatment) in 15 patients with the OPTIA device. All the procedures were well tolerated and uneventful. We did not observe significant differences between the two devices as to pre‐ and post‐EEX parameters, namely in target hematocrit and in HbS reduction. Noteworthy, due to the lowest EBV allowed by the OPTIA device, an EEX procedure performed in a 13 Kg‐ child did not require a preliminary priming of the circuit. In conclusion, the OPTIA device proved to be as effective as the Spectra device in treating SCD patients either during sickling crisis or as prophylactic therapy. The growing incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the world seems to be related to the spread of Westernized lifestyles, particularly dietary habits. Several studies have found that high consumption of red meat—especially processed red meat, a mainstay of Western diets—is associated with an increased risk of developing CRC. One possible reason for the association are the adverse effects exerted by the heme iron contained in red meat, which has the potential to affect homeostasis and colonic epithelial cell renewal and to promote the formation of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents. A correlation has also emerged between CRC and alterations of the gut microbiota, since the micro-organisms found in the intestinal lumen seem to influence the activation of enterocyte genes involved in the initiation and progression of carcinogenesis. Dietary habits can therefore modify the gut microbiota, affecting gene activation and favoring the development of cancer cells. We review and discuss the most recent literature on the hypothesis that heme iron can exert adverse effects by altering the gut microbiota and colorectal epithelial cell homeostasis. 相似文献

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is a cortical area involved in selecting and retaining information to produce complex behaviors. Within the PFC, the dopaminergic system plays an important role in information processing. Thus, the objective of this study was to test whether bilateral administration of the D1 and D2 receptor antagonists in the prelimbic region of the PFC influenced the performance of mice in a non-associative spatial learning task. CD1 mice were bilaterally microinjected in the PFC with either the D1 receptor antagonist, SCH23390 (SCH 6.25; 12.5; 50 ng), or the D2 receptor antagonist, sulpiride (SULP 12.5; 50; 100 ng) and placed into an open field containing five different objects. After three sessions of habituation two objects were repositioned (spatial change) and in the subsequent session one of the objects was substituted (non-spatial change). No significant alteration was observed in the habituation pattern of the animals after D1 or D2 receptor blockade. When two of the objects were displaced, control mice explored the displaced objects far more than the non-displaced ones, while mice treated with SCH or SULP spent a comparable amount of time re-exploring the two object categories. Conversely, DA antagonists had no effects on the discrimination of the new object. Thus, the administration of both SCH and SULP selectively impaired the ability of mice to discriminate a spatial change, without affecting any other behavioral parameter. These findings could provide a model to study the role of the PFC dopaminergic system in spatial learning and to study the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive and attention deficits often observed in psychiatric disorders. 相似文献

Occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica is associated with the development of silicosis, lung cancer and airways diseases. In order to assess cytotoxic effects and direct-oxidative DNA damage induced by short-term exposure to different doses of respirable alpha-quartz (NIST SRM1878a), we conducted a study using A549 cells. The cells were exposed to alpha-quartz at 25, 50, 100 microg/ml for 4 h and analysed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and LDH release assay for cytotoxic effect evaluation. Cells were also exposed to 10, 25, 50, 100 microg/ml of alpha-quartz for 2 h and 4 h and analysed by Fpg comet test to evaluate direct and oxidative DNA damage. SEM observations of treated cells showed bleb development at lower doses and alterations of microvilli morphology at the highest dose. A slight LDH release was found only at 100 microg/ml. Fpg comet test showed a dose-related oxidative DNA damage in cells exposed for 2 h to quartz. Cells exposed for 4h at the same concentrations showed a dose-related direct DNA damage and the presence of oxidative DNA damage at lower doses. The bleb induction on cell surface evidenced by SEM at lower doses correlates with the presence of oxidative DNA damage at 4 h. The cell surface modifications observed by SEM at 100 microg/ml indicate that high doses of quartz induce more evident cytotoxic effects confirmed by LDH analysis and correlate with the genotoxicity showed by comet assay. 相似文献
