Benign Cephalic Histiocytosis: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Benign cephalic histiocytosis (BCH) is a rare type of non‐Langerhans histiocytic disorder, usually presenting with small, yellow‐red or yellow‐brown, asymptomatic papules, located mostly on the head and neck of infants and young children. The histopathologic hallmark of BCH is a well‐circumscribed histiocytic infiltrate in the superficial to mid‐reticular dermis. BCH is a self‐healing disorder, with the eruptions regressing spontaneously in most cases; therefore no treatment is required. We present a case of BCH in a 7‐month‐old boy who was referred to our department with multiple, asymptomatic, yellow‐red papules located on his face, and we review 55 cases published in the English‐language literature in an effort to better describe and understand this unusual entity.     

Compound Heterozygosity for Hb Adana (HBA2: c.179G>A) and the –α3.7/αα Thalassemia Deletion in Greece: Clinical Phenotype and Genetic Counseling

Hb Adana (HBA2: c.179G>A) is found worldwide but is extremely rare and carriers are asymptomatic, with red cell indices similar to α⁺-thalassemia (α⁺-thal) carriers. First line screening tests are unable to detect the unstable hemoglobin (Hb). Coinheritance with the α-thal (–α^3.7) deletion is herein presented and the challenges involving genetic counseling of couples carrying the mutations are discussed.     

West Nile virus in mosquitoes in Greece

Epidemics of West Nile virus (WNV) occurred for two consecutive years in Greece (in 2010 and 2011). A total of 16,116 adult Culex pipiens mosquitoes collected in two peripheries, Central Macedonia and Thessaly, were tested for WNV infection. WNV lineage 2 was detected in 6/296 mosquito pools, three in each year. The H₂₄₉P substitution in the NS3 protein, previously associated with increased pathogenicity and thermotolerance, was detected in all six WNV-positive mosquito pools. When 21 individual C. pipiens mosquitoes were tested for the locus CQ11 to distinguish between the two C. pipiens forms, pipiens and molestus, 71.4 % were identified as pipiens, 4.7 % as molestus, and 19 % as hybrid pipiens/molestus, giving the first evidence that both C. pipiens biotypes are present in Greece, with a significant proportion being hybrids. The exact role of the C. pipiens forms and hybrids in the WNV epidemiology, in combination or not with the H₂₄₉P substitution in the virus genome, remains to be elucidated.     

Nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis with short‐term alcohol intoxication – a case report

Alcohol‐induced rhabdomyolysis is a potentially life‐threatening condition due to the probability of progression to acute renal injury. Patients admitted to emergency department with acute alcohol intoxication should always undergo blood and urine tests for early recognition and treatment of rhabdomyolysis.
