AIM: To analyse the influence of cyclic loading on the mechanical behaviour of nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires employed in the manufacture of ProFile rotary endodontic instruments. METHODOLOGY: Nickel-titanium wires, 1.2 mm in diameter, taken from the production line of ProFile rotary endodontic instruments before the final machining step, were tensile-tested to rupture in the as-received condition and after 100 load-unload cycles in the superelastic plateau (4% elongation). The wires were characterized by X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and by differential scanning calorimetry and compared with new size 30, .06 taper ProFile instruments. The fracture surfaces of the wires were observed by scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: The mechanical properties of the as-received wires, their chemical composition, the phases present and their transformation temperatures were consistent with their final application. Only small changes, which decreased after the first few cycles, took place in the mechanical properties of the cycled wires. The stress at maximum load and the plastic strain at breakage remained the same, while the critical stress for inducing the superelastic behaviour, which is related to the restoring force of the endodontic instruments, decreased by approximately 27%. CONCLUSIONS: The mechanical behaviour of the NiTi wires was modified slightly by cyclic tensile loading in the superelastic plateau. As the changes tended towards stabilization, the clinical use of rotary NiTi ProFile instruments does not compromise their superelastic properties until they fracture by fatigue or torsional overload, or are otherwise discarded. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine the stress corrosion susceptibility coefficient, n, of seven dental porcelains (A: Ceramco I; B: Ceramco-II; C: Ceramco-III; D: d.Sign; E: Cerabien; F: Vitadur-Alpha; and G: Ultropaline) after aging in air or artificial saliva, and correlate results with leucite content (LC). METHODS: Bars were fired according to manufacturers' instructions and polished before induction of cracks by a Vickers indenter (19.6N, 20s). Four specimens were stored in air/room temperature, and three in saliva/37 degrees C. Five indentations were made per specimen and crack lengths measured at the following times: approximately 0; 1; 3; 10; 30; 100; 300; 1000 and 3000 h. The stress corrosion coefficient n was calculated by linear regression analysis after plotting crack length as a function of time, considering that the slope of the curve was [2/(3n+2)]. Microstructural analysis was performed to determine LC. RESULTS: LC of the porcelains were 22% (A and B); 6% (C); 15% (D); 0% (E and F); and 13% (G). Except for porcelains A and D, all materials showed a decrease in their n values when stored in artificial saliva. However, the decrease was more pronounced for porcelains B, F, and G. Ranking of materials varied according to storage media (in air, porcelain G showed higher n compared to A, while in saliva both showed similar coefficients). No correlation was found between n values and LC in air or saliva. SIGNIFICANCE: Storage media influenced the n value obtained for most of the materials. LC did not affect resistance to slow crack growth regardless of the test environment. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine whether (a) an uptake system for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) exists in human dental pulp, (b) GABA can be released from nerves in this tissue, and (c) GABA(B) autoreceptors modulate release of this transmitter. Segments of vital pulp were incubated in [(3)H]GABA (0.1-10 microM) for up to 120 min, washed, and the retained [(3)H] extracted and assayed. Some tissues were treated with GABA uptake inhibitors (nipecotic acid or NO-711) prior to incubation. At concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0 microM the uptake of [(3)H]GABA was saturated after 90 min of incubation. At 10 microM, at least two uptake compartments were apparent, and the amount of [(3)H]GABA retained was five-fold greater than 0.1 microM. The uptake inhibitors reduced [(3)H]GABA accumulation by more than 80%. In the release study, pulp was incubated in [(3)H]GABA (0.5 microM) for 90 min, and superfused with Krebs solution containing NO-711 (5 microM). Electrical stimulation increased the overflow of [(3)H]; a GABA(B) autoreceptor agonist (baclofen) inhibited, whilst an antagonist, Sch 50911, enhanced this release. The effects of baclofen were reversed by Sch 50911. These results imply that GABA can be taken up and bound firmly in compartments within human dental pulp, GABA can be released from isolated pulp segments by electrical stimulation, and this release is modulated by GABA(B) autoreceptors. 相似文献

Background
Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure used to treat a bone defect or deformity in the skull. To date, there is little consensus on the standard-of-care for graft materials used in such a procedure. Graft materials must have sufficient mechanical strength to protect the underlying brain as well as the ability to integrate and support new bone growth. Also, the ideal graft material should be individually customized to the contours of the defect to ensure a suitable aesthetic outcome for the patient.Purpose
Customized 3D-printed scaffolds comprising of polycaprolactone-β-tricalcium phosphate (PCL-TCP) have been developed with mechanical properties suitable for cranioplasty. Osteostimulation of PCL-TCP was enhanced through the addition of a bone matrix-mimicking heparan sulphate glycosaminoglycan (HS3) with increased affinity for bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2). Efficacy of this PCL-TCP/HS3 combination device was assessed in a rat critical-sized calvarial defect model.Method
Critical-sized defects (5 mm) were created in both parietal bones of 19 Sprague Dawley rats (Male, 450–550 g). Each cranial defect was randomly assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups: (1) A control group consisting of PCL-TCP/Fibrin alone (n = 5); (2) PCL-TCP/Fibrin-HSft (30 μg) (n = 6) (HSft is the flow-through during HS3 isolation that has reduced affinity for BMP-2); (3) PCL-TCP/Fibrin-HS3 (5 μg) (n = 6); (4) PCL-TCP/Fibrin-HS3 (30 μg) (n = 6). Scaffold integration and bone formation was evaluated 12-weeks post implantation by μCT and histology.Results
Treatment with PCL-TCP/Fibrin alone (control) resulted in 23.7% ± 1.55% (BV/TV) of the calvarial defect being filled with new bone, a result similar to treatment with PCL-TCP/Fibrin scaffolds containing either HSft or HS3 (5 μg). At increased amounts of HS3 (30 μg), enhanced bone formation was evident (BV/TV = 38.6% ± 9.38%), a result 1.6-fold higher than control. Further assessment by 2D μCT and histology confirmed the presence of enhanced bone formation and scaffold integration with surrounding host bone only when scaffolds contained sufficient bone matrix-mimicking HS3.Conclusion
Enhancing the biomimicry of devices using a heparan sulphate with increased affinity to BMP-2 can serve to improve the performance of PCL-TCP scaffolds and provides a suitable treatment for cranioplasty. 相似文献25.

Introduction
Imaging methods are essential for the correct identification of root canal anatomy, which is a key factor for successful endodontic therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of periapical radiography (PR) and cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging in identifying the apical delta (AD) using micro-computed tomographic imaging as the gold standard.Methods
PR and CBCT images of 110 human premolars (120 root canals) were obtained using the VistaScan digital intraoral system (Durr Dental, Beitigheim-Bissinger, Germany) and the 3D Accuitomo CBCT unit (J Morita, Kyoto, Japan), respectively. Two oral radiologists assessed the PR and CBCT images for the presence of ADs using a 5-point scale. Additionally, in the CBCT images, the number of apical foramina was also evaluated. The gold standard was established by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging. The diagnostic values related to PR and CBCT imaging were compared using the McNemar test. The detection of the number of foramina was compared using the paired t test (α ≤ 0.05).Results
ADs were present in 40 root canals (33.3%). Both PR and CBCT images differed significantly from the gold standard (P < .05) in the detection of ADs. CBCT imaging showed higher values than PR for all diagnostic tests (P < .05). Despite the moderate accuracy of PR (0.62) and CBCT imaging (0.73), these methods presented very low sensitivity values (0.07 and 0.35 for PR and CBCT, respectively). CBCT imaging had a tendency of underestimating the number of foramina (P < .05).Conclusions
CBCT imaging showed better performance than PR in the detection of ADs; both imaging modalities underestimate its presence when compared with the gold standard. In general, the number of apical foramina cannot be reliably assessed using CBCT imaging. 相似文献27.

The Le Fort I level osteotomy is a procedure well known to oral and maxillofacial surgeons, who routinely use it to correct midfacial skeletal deformities and alter the dental occlusion. This osteotomy can also be used as a maxillotomy for access to more superiorly and posteriorly situated structures. The downfracture technique provides the surgeon with a safe approach that allows visualization of the maxillary sinuses, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, base of the skull and upper cervical spine. This approach can also be combined with a midline lip split, mandibulotomy and glossotomy to give access to retropharyngeal structures. By modifying the combined Le Fort I and transmandibular approach utilizing a midline split of the hard and soft palate, the access to the clivus can be improved considerably. The clinical applications of these combined procedures in the treatment of basilar invagination and tumors of the nasopharynx are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACTPurpose: To describe an uncommon presentation of ocular infection caused by human herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2).Methods: Case report.Results: A 32-year-old female with no prior history of mucocutaneous herpesvirus infection presented with a minimally painful hypertensive granulomatous panophthalmitis and optic neuropathy that was initially suspected to be orbital cellulitis. Her disease progressed despite antibiotic and steroid treatment, and HSV-2 was ultimately identified in the vitreous.Conclusion: Although rare, ocular infection by human herpesvirus can present as a panophthalmitis. The case is discussed in the context of two previously reported cases of herpes simplex panophthalmitis, as well panophthalmitis caused by varicella zoster virus. 相似文献

A population of lymphoid cells from several animal species, including man, was identified through a membrane receptor which binds sheep red blood cells treated with antibody and complement. When cells from different lymphoid organs were incubated with EAC at 37°C, only part of the lymphocytes (named CRL) bound EAC and formed rosettes, and this interaction was shown to be C3-dependent. Mouse lymphoid cells could be specifically depleted of CRL by allowing them first to interact with EAC and then submitting the mixture to ultracentrifugation in a gradient of BSA. After ultracentrifugation, a population of cells containing 95% or more of non-CRL were recovered from the upper layers of the gradient. In addition to their different abilities to bind EAC, CRL and non-CRL from mouse lymphoid organs could be distinguished by the following properties: (a) CRL adhered preferentially to nylon wool at 37°C in the presence of mouse serum. (b) After differential flotation in a gradient of BSA, a significantly higher proportion of CRL were recovered from the upper layers of the gradient. (c) The population of CRL contained most of the lymphocytes bearing immunoglobulin determinants on their membranes. (d) The distribution of CRL was quite different among lymphocytes obtained from various lymphoid organs, and they were never found in the thymus. (e) The membrane receptor for EAC was not detected in plaque-forming cells of mice which had been previously immunized with burro red cells. CRL and non-CRL could not be distinguished by their life span, as they were found in similar proportions among long-lived and short-lived lymphocytes from mouse peripheral lymph nodes. The function of this receptor on the membrane of certain lymphoid cells may be related to (a) the trapping and localization of antigen in lymphoid organs or (b) the localization of lymphoid cells in inflammatory sites. 相似文献
