Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein B1, an RNA-binding protein required for mRNA maturation, reportedly is overexpressed in early lung cancer and in several other tumors, including precancerous lesions. Expression of the protein was assessed immunohistochemically in 39 specimens of malignant mesothelioma and five of non-neoplastic pleura, and by flow cytometry in a human epithelioid mesothelioma cell line. No tumor showed overexpression, but 29 of 39 cases showed modest expression. Patients whose tumors showed expression had significantly better survival rates than others. Epithelioid tumors and reactive mesothelial cells were more likely to express the protein than sarcomatoid tumors and resting mesothelial cells. Flow cytometric analysis of an epithelioid mesothelioma cell line demonstrated stronger expression in exponentially growing than growth-restricted cells. Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein B1 is expressed widely in malignant mesotheliomas and in reactive mesothelial cells, but is not overexpressed. This protein may regulate proliferation linked with differentiation toward epithelioid morphology in mesothelial cells. Expression of the protein may be a prognostic indicator for patents with malignant mesothelioma. 相似文献

Hericium erinaceus (H. erinaceus) improves the symptoms of menopause. In this study, using ovariectomized mice as a model of menopause, we investigated the anti-obesity effect of this mushroom in menopause. Mice fed diets containing H. erinaceus powder showed significant decreases in the amounts of fat tissue, plasma levels of total cholesterol, and leptin. To determine the mechanism, groups of mice were respectively fed a diet containing H. erinaceus powder, a diet containing ethanol extract of H. erinaceus, and a diet containing a residue of the extract. As a result, H. erinaceus powder was found to increase fecal lipid levels in excreted matter. Further in vitro investigation showed that ethanol extract inhibited the activity of lipase, and four lipase-inhibitory compounds were isolated from the extract: hericenone C, hericenone D, hericenone F, and hericenone G. In short, we suggest that H. erinaceus has an anti-obesity effect during menopause because it decreases the ability to absorb lipids. 相似文献

Background
Epidemiological studies consistently indicate that alcoholic beverages are an independent risk factor for female breast cancer. Although the mechanism underlying this effect remains unknown, the predominant hypothesis implicates mutagenesis via the ethanol metabolite acetaldehyde, whose impact on the carcinogenesis of several types of cancer has been shown in both experimental models and molecular epidemiological studies. Many of the epidemiological studies have investigated genetic polymorphisms of alcohol dehydrogenase-1B (ADH1B) His48Arg and aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) Glu504Lys, because of the strong impact these polymorphisms have on exposure to and accumulation of acetaldehyde. With regard to breast cancer, however, evidence is scarce.Methods
To clarify the impact on female breast cancer risk of the interaction of the effects of alcohol consumption and polymorphisms in the alcohol-metabolizing enzymes ADH1B and ALDH2, we conducted a case–control study of 456 newly and histologically diagnosed breast cancer cases and 912 age- and menopausal status-matched noncancer controls. Gene–gene and gene–environment interactions between individual and combined ADH1B and ALDH2 gene polymorphisms and alcohol consumption were evaluated.Results
Despite sufficient statistical power, there was no significant impact of ADH1B and ALDH2 on the risk of breast cancer. Neither was there any significant gene–environment interactions between alcohol drinking and polymorphisms in ADH1B and ALDH2.Conclusions

Tumor-bearing animals were injected with 111In- and 169Yb-citrate. Tumor homogenates, from which the nuclear fraction was removed, and the mitochondrial fractions of the host livers were digested with pronase P. After digestion, the supernatants of the reaction mixtures were applied to Sephadex G-100 columns. The resultant eluates were analyzed for radioactivity, protein, uronic acid, and sialic acids. Three peaks of radioactivity were obtained by gel filtration. The first peak, eluted in the void volume, contained a species whose molecular weight exceeded 40 000. The second peak consisted of substances with molecular weights of 9400-40 000. Radioactivity in the third peak was liberated 111In and 169Yb. These two nuclides in the second peak were bound to acid mucopolysaccharides and/or the sulfated carbohydrate chain of sulfated glycoprotein. It was thought that the nuclides in the first peak might be bound to some acid mucopolysaccharides. The second peak nuclides seemed to be bound to acid mucopolysaccharide that contained no uronic acids, and/or to the sulfated carbohydrate chain of sulfated glycoprotein. It was concluded that they were bound to the acid mucopolysaccharides and/or the sulfated carbohydrate chain of sulfated glycoprotein in tumor tissues and liver lysosomes. 相似文献

One-way mixed lymphocyte reactions between lymphocytes from normal human donors and mitomycin C-treated cells from human leukemia T-cell, null cell, and B-cell lines were investigated. An Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-negative Japanese Burkitt's lymphoma line and two EBV-positive normal lymphoid cell lines were studied in parallei. Normal lymphocytes were stimulated significantly by the cultured null cells and B-cells, but only slightly by the cultured T-cells. The stimulatory capacity of these two leukemia cell lines was approximately equal to that of the lymphoma and normal B-cell lines. The results suggest that not only leukemia B-cells but also leukemia null cells have stimulatory determinants in mixed lymphocyte culture. 相似文献

A 66-year old male with severe hyperglycaemia due to previously uncontrolled diabetes mellitus was also suffering from arteriosclerosis obliterans and diabetic nephropathy. The patient was treated with 16 IU/day insulin zinc suspension. In addition, an intravenous infusion of 80 micrograms/day prostaglandin E1 was given for 28 days in an attempt to improve the arteriosclerosis obliterans and diabetic nephropathy. Treatment resulted in a reduction in fasting blood glucose but no decline in urinary protein. Endoscopes are mainly used to study the internal structures of organs and tissues with inherent space. These include the gastrointestinal tract, abdominal space and joint space. The standard endoscope, however, cannot be used to evaluate tissues without such space. We have invented a new type of operation tube to be used with the arthroscope. This combination enables us to study subcutaneous soft tissues without inherent space. Our new device is a powerful tool to be used for evaluation of subcutaneous soft tissues in any part of the body. Surgical procedures can also be carried out with this device. Areas of future applications of our device will be extremely wide including orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery and general surgery. Dynamic CT scans of the kidney were conducted in 57 persons with varied renal function. The results of dynamic CT were used to obtain time-density curves for renal cortex, medulla and aorta. Various parameters were calculated from these time-density curves. Among them, CA ratio, the ratio of the area under the renal cortex curve to the area under the aortic curve, showed the best correlation with creatinine clearance. With these parameters, dynamic CT studies are believed to be useful in evaluating renal function. 相似文献

Endometriosis, a chronic disease characterized by endometrial tissue located outside the uterine cavity is associated with chronic pelvic pain and infertility. However, an in‐depth understanding of the pathophysiology of endometriosis is still elusive. It is generally believed that besides ovarian steroid hormones, the growth of endometriosis can be regulated by innate immune system in pelvic microenvironment by their interaction with endometrial cells and immune cells. We conducted a series of studies in perspectives of pelvic inflammation that is triggered primarily by bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysacccharide) and is mediated by toll‐like receptor 4 and showed their involvement in the development of pelvic endometriosis. As a cellular component of innate immune system, macrophages were found to play a central role in inducing pelvic inflammatory reaction. We further report here that peritoneal macrophages retain receptors encoding for estrogen and progesterone and ovarian steroids also participate in producing an inflammatory response in pelvic cavity and are involved in the growth of endometriosis either alone or in combination with hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). As a pleiotropic growth factor, HGF retains multifunctional role in endometriosis. We describe here the individual and step‐wise role of HGF, macrophages and ovarian steroid hormones and their orchestrated involvement in the immunopathogenesis of pelvic endometriosis. 相似文献
