Pressure suppresses serotonin release by guinea pig striatal synaptosomes

Exposure to high pressure produces neurologic changes in humans which manifest as tremor, EEG changes, and convulsions. Since previous studies have implicated the involvement of the serotoninergic system in these symptoms, it was of interest to study serotonin release at high pressure. Synaptosomes isolated from guinea pig striatum were used to follow serotonin efflux at 68 ATA. The major observation was a decrease in [3H]serotonin release from depolarized striatal synaptosomes at 68 ATA. In view of the role of serotonin as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in this area, the observed decrease in synaptic release leads us to conclude that decreased serotoninergic activity in striatal neurons probably is contributing to the hyperexcitability associated with HPNS.     

INCREASED RATE OF ETHANOL ELIMINATION AND ELEVATED BLOOD ACETATE IN ASTHMATICS ON CORTICOSTEROID, BETA-2-SYMPATHICOMIMETIC AND THEOPHYLLINE TREATMENT

The rate of ethanol elimination and blood acetate concentrationsafter a peroral dose of alcohol were measured in eight asthmaticpatients receiving high-dose corticosteroid, sustained releasetheophylline and beta-2-sympathicomimetic treatment and in eightnonalcoholic, healthy controls. Mean ethanol elimination rate(ER) and mean blood acetate concentration (AC) were significantly(P<0.01) higher in asthmatics (ER=134.8 ± 12.9 mg/kg/hr,AC = 1.13± 0.25 mM) than in controls (ER = 100.2 ±12.3 mg/kg/hr, AC = 0.64 ± 0.10 mM). In the asthmaticsthere was a significant negative correlation between the ageand the rate of ethanol elimination (r = –0.890, P <0.01); in the control group, however, this correlation was oflower degree (r = –0.423) and did not achieve statisticalsignificance. Enhanced ethanol metabolism in asthmatics is possiblydue to the effect of drugs. Our results suggest that ethanolelimination rate is increased in asthmatics receiving medicationand that the effect is most significant in younger age groups.     

Practical applications of decision analysis

The number and complexity of available tests and therapies is expanding and financial resources are shrinking. Clinicians must now consider how to give the best care while limiting health expenses. Decision analysis is a tool used to guide clinicians in the practice of medicine, and to supplement and enhance intuitive decision making based on clinical experience.     

Case Control Study of Chronic Bronchitis in glass Bangle Workers

Eighty-nine cases of chronic bronchitis were matched against167 asymptomatic controls from the glass bangle industry ofFirozabad. Factors of age, social status, smoking habit andduration of exposure were studied. Duration of exposure wasfound to be a factor contributing significantly to the causationof disease. Measuring health resources, health action and dimensions of health: a review of the Berne Workshop discussions

This article examines the discussions at the Workshop on MeasuringHealth Behaviour and Health: towards New Health Promotion Indicatorscentred on the main areas of health promotion: reviewing thestate of the art in the field of health promotion indicators,clarifying problems with current health indicators, and helpingto establish a network of institutions and individuals activein health indicator development. The Berne Workshop revealedthe differences in opinions on health promotion indicators andconcluded that the present state of the art in the field wasquite unsatisfactory. The author¹ concludes by setting out sixspecific recommendations for the improvement of the currentsituation.     

Ocular side effects of isotretinoin therapy

Isotretinoin (Accutane Capsules) is a synthetic vitamin A compound used for treatment of recalcitrant cystic acne. It has numerous ocular toxic side effects which include anterior segment inflammation, dry eye syndrome, contact lens intolerance, altered refraction, photosensitivity, and reduced night vision. Eye care practitioners should be aware of these potential side effects and be prepared to communicate with the prescribing physician if side effects present.
