Biomechanics of the golf swing in players with pathologic conditions of the forearm, wrist, and hand

Golf is an activity generally stressful to the hands and wrists and particularly can produce increasing symptoms in players with underlying problems such as hand and wrist arthritis or tendinitis. The purpose of this study was to quantitate wrist motion and club head/ball impact force in subjects with pathologic conditions of the hand, wrist, or forearm, within a laboratory environment. A regular straight-handled golf club was compared to a new BioCurve handle design that has a 19 degrees ulnar bend. We measured and compared the effect of the two grips on wrist motion, club head velocity, ball impact force, ball impact location, and isometric torsional strength in 20 subjects who had a variety of upper extremity disorders. This data was then compared to data collected in an identical fashion from golfers without such conditions. The results of our study show that there were no differences related to club handle design on impact force or impact location, club head velocity, or club head path and face angle. Wrist kinematic differences were minimal between handle designs. The differences that were significant (P less than 0.05) centered around the decreased ulnar deviation of the left hand that resulted when subjects used the BioCurve handle design, which also allowed greater resistance to torque than the straight grip club. In addition to collecting objective data, we asked subjects for their opinions of the two grips. As a whole, the normal group and the group with pathologic conditions noted more comfort, improved grip, and less shock transmission with the BioCurve handle.     

Biologic effects of hyperthermia and radiation on gastric cancer cells (SGC-7901) in vitro. II. Ultrastructural changes of cells

Different characteristic damages of the SGC-7901 gastric adenocarcinoma cells were studied by electron microscopy 1, 36, 72, 96 and 120 hours after heating and radiation in vitro. The visible damages, such as the enlarged mitochondria, increase of lysosomes and perichromatin granules could be shown 1 hour after heating (43 degrees C for 30 min) but no visible damages of the cells were shown until 36 hours following radiation (500 rad). In order to study the ultrastructural changes of the gastric cancer cells in mitosis after heating and radiation, we have used the new method of ultrastructural research in selecting and observing the M cell in vitro and found loosened structure of chromosome and disappearance of microtubules 1 hour following hyperthermia. At the same time, no apparent abnormalities of the mitotic cells were observed after radiation. It is the chief cause of division delay in heat injured cells. However, the chromosomes and microtubules of the new mitotic cells could recover 36 hours after heating (43 degrees C for 30 min). After radiation, the giant cells and abnormal morphologic changes of cells gradually increase and the living cells decrease. Unexpectedly, the division of a few giant cells is observed 72 hours after heating and radiation.     

Antimalarial action of alloxan and 5,6-diamino-2,4-dihydroxy-pyrimidine in Plasmodium berghei

Three hours after iv administration of alloxan and 5,6-diamino-2,4-dihydroxy-pyrimidine to mice infected with chloroquine-sensitive (CS) and chloroquine-resistant (CR) strains of Plasmodium berghei, the 2 compounds showed remarkable antimalarial actions. Parasitemia in CS and CR infected mice were reduced by about 50%. Slight hemolysis was seen in mice treated with alloxan but not in mice treated with 5,6-diamino-2,4-dihydro-pyrimidine. Alloxan did not inhibit glutathione reductase activity and no alloxan-glutathione complex was produced. No relationship between the antimalarial effects of alloxan and hemolysis or GSH content were found. It is suggested that the antimalarial effects of the two agents may be due to the inhibition of dihydroorotic acid dehydrogenase.     

Preliminary study on the nucleic acid hybridization technic in detecting HSV-2 DNA corresponding sequence of cancer tissues of the uterine cervix

In this paper, 34 samples, 25 from 18 cervical carcinoma patients and 9 from 8 non-cervical carcinoma patients, were assayed using (alpha-32P) dCTP HSV-2 DNA probe and nucleic acid hybridization technic. It was shown that the positive rates of HSV-2 DNA corresponding sequence were 50% (2/4), 36% (5/14) and 12% (1/8) in the in situ cancer, invasive cancer and non-cervical cancer tissues. No HSV was isolated from 7 cancer specimens which showed a positive reaction by nucleic acid hybridization.
