Diabetes mellitus as a contributor to the in-hospital mortality after acute myocardial infarction in Kuwait 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
OBJECTIVES: First, to compare the in-hospital mortality after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) among diabetic versus non-diabetic patients. Secondly, to evaluate if this association remains the same across gender and ethnic groups. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used a 1:2 individually matched retrospective case-control study. All patients admitted to Mubarak Al-Kabeer hospital in Kuwait, with a confirmed diagnosis of AMI during August 1997 and July 2002 made up the study population. All 149 patients who died during this period made up the cases. Two control subjects to match each case were randomly chosen from survivors, after hospitalization with AMI. Cases and controls were individually matched by age, sex and ethnicity. History of diabetes mellitus (DM) was found to be significantly associated with in-hospital mortality after AMI (odds ratio: 1.9, 95% CI: 1.2-3.0). None of the other cardiovascular related histories were associated with mortality. Further analyses on the type of diabetes showed that the NIDDM (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) risk of mortality was significantly raised after AMI. Also among women (odds ratio: 2.7, 95% CI: 1.2-5.9), and non-Kuwaiti population (odds ratio: 3.4, 95% CI: 1.1-9.9) the risk was significantly elevated. CONCLUSIONS: Risk of in-hospital mortality after AMI is almost doubled among diabetic patients. In this work, we present the results of the magnetic, critical, and magnetocaloric properties of the rhombohedral-structured La0.55Bi0.05Sr0.4CoO3 cobaltite. Based on the modified Arrott plot, Kouvel–Fisher, and critical isotherm analyses, we obtained the values of critical exponents (β, γ, and δ) as well as Curie temperature (TC) for the investigated compound. These components were consistent with their corresponding values and they were validated by the Widom scaling law and scaling theory. The obtained critical exponents were close to the theoretical prediction of the mean-field model values, revealing the characteristic of long-range ferromagnetic interactions. The magnetic entropy, heat capacity, and local exponent n(T, μ0H) of the La0.55Bi0.05Sr0.4CoO3 compound collapsed to a single universal curve, confirming its universal behaviour. The estimated spontaneous magnetization value extracted through the analysis of the magnetic entropy change was consistent with that deduced through the classical extrapolation of the Arrott curves. Thus, the magnetic entropy change is a valid and useful approach to estimate the spontaneous magnetization of La0.55Bi0.05Sr0.4CoO3.In this work, we present the results of the magnetic, critical, and magnetocaloric properties of the rhombohedral-structured La0.55Bi0.05Sr0.4CoO3 cobaltite. 相似文献

The cellular defence protein Nrf2 is a mediator of oncogenesis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and other cancers. However, the control of Nrf2 expression and activity in cancer is not fully understood. We previously reported the absence of Keap1, a pivotal regulator of Nrf2, in ~70% of PDAC cases. Here we describe a novel mechanism whereby the epigenetic regulator UHRF1 suppresses Keap1 protein levels. UHRF1 expression was observed in 20% (5 of 25) of benign pancreatic ducts compared to 86% (114 of 132) of pancreatic tumours, and an inverse relationship between UHRF1 and Keap1 levels in PDAC tumours (n = 124) was apparent (p = 0.002). We also provide evidence that UHRF1‐mediated regulation of the Nrf2 pathway contributes to the aggressive behaviour of PDAC. Depletion of UHRF1 from PDAC cells decreased growth and enhanced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. UHRF1 depletion also led to reduced levels of Nrf2‐regulated downstream proteins and was accompanied by heightened oxidative stress, in the form of lower glutathione levels and increased reactive oxygen species. Concomitant depletion of Keap1 and UHRF1 restored Nrf2 levels and reversed cell cycle arrest and the increase in reactive oxygen species. Mechanistically, depletion of UHRF1 reduced global and tumour suppressor promoter methylation in pancreatic cancer cell lines, and KEAP1 gene promoter methylation was reduced in one of three cell lines examined. Thus, methylation of the KEAP1 gene promoter may contribute to the suppression of Keap1 protein levels by UHRF1, although our data suggest that additional mechanisms need to be explored. Finally, we demonstrate that K‐Ras drives UHRF1 expression, establishing a novel link between this oncogene and Nrf2‐mediated cellular protection. Since UHRF1 over‐expression occurs in other cancers, its ability to regulate the Keap1–Nrf2 pathway may be critically important to the malignant behaviour of these cancers. © 2015 The Authors. Documenting the circulation dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 variants in different regions of the world is crucial for monitoring virus transmission worldwide and contributing to global efforts towards combating the pandemic. Tunisia has experienced several waves of COVID-19 with a significant number of infections and deaths. The present study provides genetic information on the different lineages of SARS-CoV-2 that circulated in Tunisia over 17 months. Lineages were assigned for 1359 samples using whole-genome sequencing, partial S gene sequencing and variant-specific real-time RT-PCR tests. Forty-eight different lineages of SARS-CoV-2 were identified, including variants of concern (VOCs), variants of interest (VOIs) and variants under monitoring (VUMs), particularly Alpha, Beta, Delta, A.27, Zeta and Eta. The first wave, limited to imported and import-related cases, was characterized by a small number of positive samples and lineages. During the second wave, a large number of lineages were detected; the third wave was marked by the predominance of the Alpha VOC, and the fourth wave was characterized by the predominance of the Delta VOC. This study adds new genomic data to the global context of COVID-19, particularly from the North African region, and highlights the importance of the timely molecular characterization of circulating strains. 相似文献

The estimation of the trajectory of the centre of pressure during gait is possible without using force plate by modelling the whole body as a multi-segment chain. The kinematics and inertial parameters of each segment are necessary to determine the ground reaction forces and moments. The position of the centre of pressure can then be calculated at each frame of time. The objective of the study was to evaluate the accuracy of the estimation of the position of the centre of pressure during gait obtained without force plate data. Segment inertial parameters were determined using a proportional model and a geometric model. The modelling and calculations were computed for six volunteers and the estimated centres of pressure were compared to the centre of pressure measured using force plates considered as the gold standard. The estimation was better using the geometric model with an accuracy of 33 mm (4.1% of the peak-to-peak amplitude) on the longitudinal axis and 14.2 mm (12.9% of the peak-to-peak amplitude) on the lateral axis. 相似文献
