Alcoholism and heavy drinking are associated with a number of physiological, behavioral, affective, and cognitive problems. One such problem involves dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, with alcoholics showing higher basal cortisol levels and reduced inhibitory feedback control. In addition, alcohol consumption is associated with decreased heart rate variability (HRV). In the present study we examined the relationships among alcohol consumption, cortisol excretion, and HRV in 542 apparently healthy men. Men in the top tertile of self-reported alcohol consumption had higher cortisol levels and lower HRV compared to men in the lower two tertiles of alcohol consumption. In addition, the inverse relationship between cortisol and HRV was greatly attenuated in the heavy drinking group even after accounting for a number of potential confounding factors. These results support prior research on the HPA axis dysregulation in alcoholics and suggest impaired inhibitory control of the HPA axis in heavy drinkers. The findings are consistent with the neurovisceral integration model, which links central and peripheral processes, and may provide a comprehensive framework for the future investigation of the complex mix of physiological, behavioral, affective, and cognitive factors which comprise the heavy drinking phenotype.  相似文献

When faces are turned upside-down they are much more difficult to recognize than other objects. This "face inversion effect" has often been explained in terms of configural processing, which is impaired when faces are rotated away from the upright. Here we report a "gaze inversion effect" and discuss whether it is related to configural face processing of the whole face. Observers reported the gaze locations of photographed upright or inverted faces. When whole faces were presented, we found an inversion effect both for constant errors and observer sensitivity. These results were closely replicated when only the eyes were visible. Together, our findings suggest that gaze processing is largely based on component-based information from the eye region. Processing this information is orientation-sensitive and does not seem to rely on configural processing of the whole face.  相似文献

The effect of selected UV stabilizers on the stability of mechanical properties of a polyurethane material, Calthane ND2300, was evaluated. The addition of UV stabilizers prolonged the service life of the systems studied but did not achieve completely satisfactory results. The tensile strength and modulus of elasticity decreased after extended exposure to UV. The rate of decrease, however, was much less for the specimens with UV stabilizers. The polyurethane system that contains a mixture of a UV stabilizer and an antioxidant is considered to be the best of the groups tested, in terms of the percentage of retention of tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. It was also found that elongation at break was increased when the duration of UV aging was increased. This phenomenon occurred in all the systems, with or without UV stabilizers, and can be understood in terms of the concepts of the fragmentation of macromolecules that resulted from UV aging. The physical appearance in conjunction with mechanical property tests are needed to ensure the successful performance of any UV stabilizer.  相似文献

Supernatants from Concanavalin A-stimulated murine spleen cells were subjected to hydrophobic interaction chromatography on phenyl-Sepharose. Macrophage cytotoxicity factor (MCF), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), T-helper cell-replacing factor (TRF) and colony-stimulating factor (CSF) were bound at high ionic strength and were released stepwise at low ionic strength. CSF thus could be separated from MCF, MIF and TRF and the bulk of other proteins. Chromatography of pools containing MCF, MIF and TRF on Sephadex did not lead to a separation of the three activities which were all found in a molecular weight range of 25.000-55.000. Isoelectric focusing of these pools in pH range from 4 to 9 gave two peaks for MCF at pH 8.2 and 7.2, whereas MIF activity focused from pH 4.5 to 5.5. TRF activity was found in a single sharp peak at pH 5.3. The results demonstrate that the four biological activities can be distinguished on a chemical basis and are accessible for purification and chemical characterization.  相似文献

Retinoids have many functions in the eye, including, perhaps, the visual guidance of ocular growth. Therefore, we identified where retinoid receptors, binding proteins, and biosynthetic enzymes are located in the ocular tissues of the chick as a step toward discovering where retinoids are generated and where they act. Using antibodies to interphotoreceptor retinoid binding protein (IRBP), cellular retinol binding protein (CRBP), cellular retinoic acid binding protein (CRABP), cellular retinaldehyde binding protein (CRALBP), retinaldehyde dehydrogenase (RALDH), and retinoic acid receptors (RAR and RXR), we localized these proteins to cells in the retina, retinal pigmented epithelium, choroid and sclera of the chick eye. IRBP was detected in the photoreceptor layer and pigmented epithelium; CRBP was in the pigmented epithelium; CRABP was in amacrine and bipolar cells in the retina; CRALBP was in Müller cells, pigmented epithelium, choroid, and fibrous sclera; RALDH was in retinal amacrine cells, pigmented epithelium, and choroid; RAR was in amacrine cells, choroid, and chondrocytes and fibroblasts in the sclera; and RXR was in amacrine and ganglion cells, bipolar cell nuclei, choroid, and chondrocytes. We also found that the growth-modulating toxins colchicine and quisqualate destroyed selectively different subsets of CRABP-containing amacrine cells. We conclude that the distribution of proteins involved in retinoid metabolism is consistent with a role of retinoids not only in phototransduction, but also in maintenance of cellular phenotype and visual guidance of ocular growth.  相似文献

Experiments were performed on the quality of renal functional recovery after 24, 48, or 72-hr hypothermic storage preservation of canine kidneys in Euro-Collins solution (EC), Collins' solution C2, hypertonic citrate solutions (HC, HC-D2O), or our new flush solution 2 (F.2). Clearance tests (inulin, paraaminohippuric acid, and creatinine) and resorption rates for sodium, potassium, and glucose indicated a high superiority in the early functional recovery of F.2-preserved kidneys after all preservation periods tested. The excellent function after preservation in F.2 contrasted especially with the poor or even absent function after 72-hr preservation in HC and HC-D2O or EC. Thus F.2--a hyperosmolar solution containing sucrose with a balanced Na-K relation on the basis of "heavy water" (D2O)--is especially suitable for preservation up to 72 hr if cyclosporine is used for immunosuppression in the recipient. The recipient can be supplied with an organ with immediate good functional recovery because cyclosporine banishes the higher risk for rejection of these well-functioning organs; simultaneously, the possibility for continuous functional supervision allows avoidance of nephrotoxic side effects from the immunosuppressant.  相似文献

In a comparison of causal attributions following success and failure in hypothetical social, athletic, and academic situations, high self-esteem grade school children were more likely than low self-esteem children to attribute their success to ability and their failure to either lack of effort or bad luck. Low self-esteem children, on the other hand, attributed their success more often than high self-esteem children to good luck (and in social situations to effort and task ease as well) and their failure to lack of ability. Whereas prior studies that focused only on the internal-external dimension found that low and high self-esteem children differed in their attributional style to success but not to failure, the present study found that when distinctions between behavioral and characterological attributions (stability and globality dimensions) were included, the two groups differed significantly in response to both success and failure. Although perhaps not generalizable beyond the present attribution measure, the most pronounced attribution differences between low and high self-esteem children were observed in the social domain, the least in the academic domain, with athletics falling in between. Finally, it was found that sex and age (within the limited fourth- to sixth-grade range examined in the present study) did not alter the overriding difference in attributional style between low and high self-esteem children.This study is based on a doctoral dissertation submitted by the first author under the supervision of the last author in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree at the University of Vermont.  相似文献

We describe a novel test-strip immunoassay for quantifying drugs in biological fluids. This enzyme immunochromatographic ("immunograph") method combines many features of the enzyme-channeling homogeneous immunoassay with immunochromatography and capillary migration to provide a non-separation, non-instrumental assay for theophylline in which quantification is based on the spatial distribution of enzyme label rather than on the modulation of enzyme activity. Sample antigen and hapten-enzyme conjugate are combined and moved by capillary action up a paper strip on which specific antibody has been immobilized. After color development, the assay result is evaluated by measuring the height of the colored zone on the test strip. Quantification is not a function of enzyme activity, so the method is relatively insensitive to sample matrix effects, enzyme instability, temperature, and incubation timing. Either whole blood or plasma can be used as sample. Results correlate well with those by established instrumental methods. The simple, rapid (15 min), two-incubation protocol is well suited for on-site testing in non-laboratory environments.  相似文献
