This study was conducted to determine if lower steroid secretion by the small white follicles in incubating turkey hens contributes to lower circulating steroid concentrations during this time. Turkey hens were grouped as either laying or incubating. Serum samples and the ovarian small white follicles (SWF; 2-7 mm diameter) were collected from each hen. The SWF were pooled for each group and their cells were dispersed by trypsin digestion. Serum-luteinizing hormone (LH), progesterone (P), testosterone (T), and estradiol (E) concentrations were lower and serum prolactin concentration was higher during incubation than during egg laying. SWF cells from incubating hens secreted more P and T and less E in response to ovine luteinizing hormone (oLH) than did similar cell suspensions from laying hens. The incubating hens' SWF cells' capacity to secrete E but not their capacity to secrete P or T in vitro is consistent with the observed circulating levels. It is hypothesized that lower levels of circulating LH and/or higher levels of prolactin found in incubating hens may have a depressing effect on aromatase activity and/or an up-regulating effect on LH-induced P and T secretion by the SWF cells.  相似文献

We describe a patient with extensive ischaemic necrosis of the ileum as a result of elastic vascular sclerosis (EVS). A 2 cm carcinoid tumour was located nearby with microscopic evidence of spread to regional lymph nodes. Severe intestinal ischaemia caused by carcinoid associated EVS may be the presenting feature of small carcinoid tumours resulting in their early diagnosis.  相似文献

A variety of nutritional factors influence the bioavailability of calcium and increase a woman's risk of osteoporosis. Eight healthy women completed an 8-week metabolic study designed to investigate the effect of nonalcoholic carbonated beverage consumption on calcium metabolism. Compared with women receiving a control diet, women consuming a diet high in nonalcoholic carbonated beverages demonstrated similar mean serum levels of calcium, ionized calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, and osteocalcin. Twenty-four-hour urine volume, creatinine clearance, calcium-creatinine ratio, and phosphorus-creatinine ratio were similar during consumption of the diet high in nonalcoholic carbonated beverages and the control diet. Twenty-four-hour cyclic adenosine monophosphate-creatinine ratio was significantly lower in women consuming the diet high in nonalcoholic carbonated beverage compared with women receiving the control diet (342 +/- 27.4 nmol/mmol vs 409 +/- 22.1 nmol/mmol). Consumption of a diet high in nonalcoholic carbonated beverages on a short-term basis does not appear to affect adversely the serum or urinary markers of calcium metabolism.  相似文献

Forty-six patients with cholangitis were randomized to receive therapy with mezlocillin sodium (24 patients) or a combination of ampicillin sodium--gentamicin sulfate (22 patients). The biliary concentration of mezlocillin was 112 times higher than that of ampicillin and 778 times higher than that of gentamicin. The ratio of the concentration in serum or bile over the minimum inhibitory concentration against aerobic gram-negative bacilli (therapeutic index) was higher for mezlocillin than for either ampicillin or gentamicin. Twenty (83%) of 24 patients were cured following mezlocillin therapy compared with 9 (41%) of 22 patients after ampicillin-gentamicin therapy. The 3 patients with superinfection were in the ampicillin-gentamicin arm of the study. Fewer toxic or adverse effects occurred in association with mezlocillin treatment than with ampicillin-gentamicin treatment. Mezlocillin therapy was more effective, less toxic, and less expensive than treatment with ampicillin and gentamicin for patients with cholangitis.  相似文献

Patients suffering from pain due to osteoarthritis of the hip and knee participated in a double-blind placebo controlled trial using daily Codetron home care units for 6 weeks over the tibial, saphenous, popliteal and sciatic nerves, and tender points. Seventy-four percent of patients in the real Codetron (Group A) and 28% of the patients in sham Codetron (Group B) improved their pain level more than 25% as measured by visual analogue scale. The difference in pain improvement in the two groups was statistically significant (p less than 0.02 using Fisher's exact probability ratio). Other functional parameters proved to be insensitive to change in this study. This is highly suggestive of beneficial effect of nonhabituating Codetron as a complementary modality in the therapy of chronic pain conditions such as osteoarthritis.  相似文献

Direct actions of cocaine on cardiac cellular electrical activity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The hypothesis that cocaine has Class I-type antiarrhythmic drug effects was tested in tissues isolated from rabbit heart with standard microelectrode methods. Propranolol (1 microM) was used to block beta-adrenergic effects. The actions of cocaine on cellular electrophysiology were concentration- and time-dependent and were reversible. In paced right atrial (RA) and right ventricular papillary (RVP) tissues, cocaine produced a profound prolongation of the effective refractory period (ERP) assessed by either premature stimulation or minimum pacing interval. ERP was increased up to eightfold in RA tissue and doubled in RVP tissue by 60 microM cocaine. This concentration of cocaine depressed action potential phase 0 depolarization 80% in RA tissue and 53% in RVP tissue but had no effect on resting membrane potentials. Automaticity was moderately depressed in sinus node (34% decrease in rate) but not in tricuspid valve cells. Phase 0 depolarization was not altered in these spontaneously active slow-response cells. Repolarization was depressed in RA, tricuspid valve, and sinus node cells leading to a twofold increase in action potential duration during exposure to cocaine. Evidence from the effects on cellular action potentials suggests that cocaine affects both fast Na+ channels and repolarizing K+ but not Ca2+ channels. We conclude that cocaine has Class I-type activity and the effects on ERP are extreme.  相似文献

Lidocaine increases the energy required for ventricular defibrillation in dogs. Because sodium channel-blocking agents that are weak bases have pH-dependent electrophysiologic effects, we investigated the pH dependence of lidocaine (pKa, 7.9) on internal defibrillation energy requirements in 28 dogs with atrial spring and left ventricular patch electrodes. Results of defibrillation testing were used to derive 50% and 90% successful energy requirements (ED50 and ED90) using logistic regression and were compared with analysis of variance. Acidosis produced by hydrochloric acid infusion decreased the arterial pH from 7.40 +/- 0.05 (SD) to 7.18 +/- 0.03 (n = 8, p less than 0.01), but no significant change in ED90 was observed (14 +/- 4 to 16 +/- 6 J). Lidocaine infusion to therapeutic levels (4.2 +/- .07 micrograms/ml) at normal pH (7.42 +/- 0.02) increased ED90 from 13 +/- 3 to 17 +/- 3 J (n = 6, p less than 0.05), and subsequent acidosis (pH 7.19 +/- 0.02, p less than 0.01) exacerbated this effect of lidocaine on ED90 (22 +/- 5 J, p less than 0.05). Alkalosis produced by respirator hyperventilation increased the arterial pH from 7.41 +/- 0.03 to 7.60 +/- 0.03 (n = 8, p less than 0.01), with a fall in ED90 from 13 +/- 4 to 8 +/- 3 J (p less than 0.01).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
