The interaction between cancer cells and platelets has been known for a long time. Although platelet indices have been also investigated in several clinical settings, it has not been exactly demonstrated in cancer patients. We investigated platelet indices in colorectal cancer patients and compared with healthy subjects. Two hundred and twenty-one colorectal cancer patients and 110 healthy subjects were enrolled into the retrospective study. Data were obtained from computerized medical records of our hospital. Medical record review was performed for all patients regarding thrombocyte indices. Platelet count (325.000/mm3 ± 265.000/mm3 vs 267.000/mm3 ± 67.000/mm3; p=0.025; respectively) and plateletcrit (Pct) (0.25% ± 0.10 vs 0.21 ± 0.05; p<0.001; respectively) were increased in patients compared with healthy subjects while mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) were similar. The platelet indices were not related to existence of metastasis or acute abdomen. Platelet count and Pct, but not MPV and PDW, are elevated in colorectal cancer patients. Future studies that investigate platelet morphology, function, and putative role of platelets in tumorigenesis and metatasis should be established.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of arthrocentesis and sodium hyaluronate (SH) injections on nitrite, nitrate, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBA-RS) levels in temporomandibular joint internal derangements. STUDY DESIGN: Arthrocentesis was performed on 10 patients, and 15 patients received a supplemental injection of SH after arthrocentesis. All these patients received an SH injection 15 days after the first intervention. The synovial fluid samples were obtained before arthrocentesis on the first appointment and before the SH injection 15 days later. Nitrite and nitrate levels were measured with a highly sensitive and specific chemiluminescence detection method, and the concentration of lipid peroxidation products was assessed by means of the thiobarbituric acid reaction. RESULTS: Symptomatic improvement was seen in both groups. Nitrite, nitrate, and TBA-RS levels only decreased significantly (P <.05) with a supplemental SH injection after arthrocentesis. CONCLUSIONS: Intra-articular injections of SH may reduce nitrite, nitrate, and TBA-RS levels that play a role in the pathogenesis of various temporomandibular disorders.  相似文献

AIM:To evaluate the changes in ocular blood flow with color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) after intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injection.METHODS: A total of 46 patients who underwent IVTA (4 mg/0.1 mL) injection for diabetic macular edema (DME) (n=22), central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) (n=12) and choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM) (n=12) were included in the study. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV) and resistivity index (RI) were measured from the ophthalmic artery (OA), the central retinal artery (CRA) and the posterior ciliary artery (PCA) of each patient with CDU before, at the end of the first week and at the end of the first month following IVTA injection.RESULTS:In the DME group, PSV of OA at the first of the first month (mean±SD) (37.48±10.87 cm/s) increased compared to pre-injection value (31.39±10.84 cm/s) (P=0.048). There was a statistically significant decrease (P=0.049) in PSV of CRA at the end of the first month (7.97±2.67 cm/s) compared to the pre-injection (9.47±3.37 cm/s). There was not any statistically significant difference on the other parameters in the DME group. Also, there was not any statistically significant difference on the ocular blood flow values in the CRVO and CNVM groups.CONCLUSION: We observed that 4 mg/0.1 mL IVTA increased PSV of OA and decreased PSV of CRA in DME patients and did not have any effect on ocular blood flow values of CRVO and CNVM patients.  相似文献

Upon demyelinating injury, microglia orchestrate a regenerative response that promotes myelin repair, thereby restoring rapid signal propagation and protecting axons from further damage. Whereas the essential phagocytic function of microglia for remyelination is well known, the underlying metabolic pathways required for myelin debris clearance are poorly understood. Here, we show that cholesterol esterification in male mouse microglia/macrophages is a necessary adaptive response to myelin debris uptake and required for the generation of lipid droplets upon demyelinating injury. When lipid droplet biogenesis is defective, innate immune cells do not resolve, and the regenerative response fails. We found that triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2)–deficient mice are unable to adapt to excess cholesterol exposure, form fewer lipid droplets, and build up endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Alleviating ER stress in TREM2-deficient mice restores lipid droplet biogenesis and resolves the innate immune response. Thus, we conclude that TREM2-dependent formation of lipid droplets constitute a protective response required for remyelination to occur.  相似文献

Introduction

Split cord malformation (SCM) is rare congenital disorder of spine in which bony, fibrous, or cartilaginous septum subdivides partially or completely the vertebral canal. SCM can be associated with other spinal abnormalities such as spina bifida, Arnold–Chiari malformation, hemivertebra, butterfly vertebra, or kyphoscoliosis and also can be seen as part of Jarcho–Levin syndrome. Prenatal diagnosis of SCM is possible by ultrasonography (US). Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and amniotic fluid acetylcholine esterase (AF-AChE) levels can be helpful to rule out additional anomalies. We present a case of fetal SCM diagnosed by US and fetal MRI.

Case

An 18-year-old woman with no obstetrics risk factor was referred for routine US screening. At sagittal section, fetal spine was seen to be disordered. A coronal view of the spinal canal showed evidence of widening at the lower thoracic and lumbar level. An echogenic mass was identified within the enlarged spinal canal at level of T6–L5. Fetal MRI and AF-AChE analysis confirmed diagnosis and ruled out other anomalies and spina bifida. Neurological examination of the baby at 16 months of age was normal.  相似文献

Aims: Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder manifesting with heterogeneous symptom clusters and clinical presentations. The deficit syndrome is the condition defined by the existence of primarily negative symptoms, and patients with the deficit syndrome differ from non‐deficit patients on measures of brain structure and function. In the current study, by using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), we investigated the frontotemporal connectivity that is hypothesized to differ between deficit and non‐deficit schizophrenia. Methods: Twenty‐nine patients and 17 healthy controls were included in the study. The patients had deficit (n = 11) or non‐deficit (n = 18) schizophrenia and they were evaluated clinically with the Schedule for Deficit Syndrome (SDS) and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Diffusion‐based images were obtained with a 1.5T Siemens Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine and analyses were carried out with Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain Library Software – Diffusion tool box software. Results: The fractional anisotropy values in the left uncinate fasciculus of schizophrenia patients with the deficit syndrome were lower than those of non‐deficit patients and the controls. There were no differences between non‐deficit schizophrenia patients and controls. Conclusion: These findings provide evidence of left uncinate fasciculus damage resulting in disrupted communication between orbitofrontal prefrontal areas and temporal areas in deficit schizophrenia patients.  相似文献

We found no data in the literature related to oxidative stress index (OSI), total oxidative status (TOS) and prolidase activity in patients with diabetic neuropathy (DN). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the oxidative status of DN patients via measurement of TOS and serum total antioxidant status (TAS) and estimation of OSI using new automated methods. Thirty-eight healthy participants, 40 diabetic patients without neuropathy, and 39 patients with DN were included. Electrophysiological and neurological examinations were performed. The activity of prolidase and levels of TOS and TAS were determined in the serum of patients. The level of TAS was lower, while the levels of TOS and OSI, and activity of prolidase were higher in both DN and diabetic control groups compared with the healthy subjects (p < 0.05). Prolidase activity was found to be higher in the DN group than in the diabetic control group (p = 0.001). In conclusion, the presence of high TOS and OSI levels together with low levels of TAS in diabetic patients with or without neuropathy may support a role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. In addition, increased serum prolidase activity in DN may be interpreted as evidence of increased collagen turnover.  相似文献

IntroductionLymphedema is the most important complication seen after breast cancer surgery. The study aimed to evaluate pain, shoulder-arm complex function, and scapular function in women who developed lymphedema after breast cancer surgery and to compare these with women without lymphedema.Materials and MethodsFifty women with lymphedema (age, 54.34 ± 9.08 years; body mass index, 30.10 ± 4.03 kg/cm2) and 57 women without lymphedema (age, 53.68 ± 9.41 years; body mass index, 29.0 ± 5.44 kg/cm2) after unilateral surgery for breast cancer were included. Clinical and demographic information was noted. The severity of lymphedema with perimeter measurements (Frustum model), level of heaviness discomfort sensation with a visual analog scale, pain threshold with a digital algometer, shoulder-arm complex functionality with the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, Hand Problems Survey (DASH), and scapular function with observational scapular dyskinesia and lateral scapular sliding tests were assessed. The t test, χ2 test, and Mann-Whitney U test were used for analyses.ResultsThe follow-up duration after the surgery was 4.24 ± 2.97 years and 3.19 ± 1.76 years, and the upper extremity volume was 2106.65 ± 510.82 cm3 and 1725.92 ± 342.49 cm³ in the lymphedema group and in the no-lymphedema group, respectively. In the lymphedema group, arm-heaviness discomfort, pain threshold levels in the trapezius and deltoid muscles, and DASH scores were worse (P < .05). The rate of scapular dyskinesia (70.0%) and type 2 scapula (32%) in the surgical side was higher in patients with lymphedema.ConclusionThe pain pressure threshold in the trapezius and deltoid muscles, heaviness sensation level, and inadequate upper extremity function are significantly higher in patients with lymphedema, and the scapular dyskinesia rate was higher.  相似文献
