Background: Fungi growing on wood cause deterioration of stored food materials or discoloration of the wood itself, and the search for new and safe bioagents is recently needed. Methods: Essential oils (EOs) from aerial parts from Mentha longifolia L. and Citrus reticulata L., analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), were tested for their antifungal activity by the vapor method against four common fungi, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, and Fusarium culmorum, and confirmed by SEM examination as the oils applied on wood samples. Results: The most abundant compounds identified in the EO from M. longifolia were menthone and eucalyptol; in C. reticulata EO, they were β-caryophyllene, β-caryophyllene oxide, and β-elemene. EOs from M. longifolia and C. reticulata, at 500 and 250 µL/mL, showed potent antifungal activity against A. flavus and A. fumigatus, with 100% fungal mycelial inhibition growth (FMIG). C. reticulata and M. longifolia EOs, at 125 µL/mL, observed FMIG values of 98% and 95%, respectively, against A. fumigatus. M. longifolia EO, at 500 and 250 µL/mL, showed potent activity against A. niger, with 100% FMIG. F. culmorum completely inhibited (100% FMIG) EOs from M. longifolia and C. reticulata applied at 500 µL/mL. Pinus roxburghii Sarg. Wood, treated with M. longifolia at 125 µL/mL, showed inhibition zone values of 7.33 and 21.33 mm against A. flavus and A. niger, respectively. Conclusions: Both oils possessed good wood-biofungicide activity with the vapor method, as clearly shown by the SEM examination. These activities suggest their possible use as natural wood preservatives.  相似文献

The efficient, highly convenient synthesis of polysubstituted pyridine derivatives was established via the reaction of N-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-2-cyanoacetamides with an assortment of arylidene malononitriles and arylidene ethyl cyanoacetates in the presence of l-proline as an efficient organocatalyst for this type of ultrasonic-mediated Michael addition. The mechanistic pathway and factors affecting this reaction were also established. The main characteristics of this procedure are high yields, use of a cost-effective catalyst, and easy work-up and purification.

The l-proline catalyzed ultrasonic-mediated synthesis of polysubstituted pyridone derivatives through the reaction of N-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-2-cyanoacetamides with an assortment of arylidenes has demonstrated as an efficient protocol.  相似文献

The information provided in the surgical pathology report of a prostate needle biopsy of carcinoma has become critical in the subsequent management and prognostication of the cancer. The surgical pathology report should thus be comprehensive and yet succinct in providing relevant information consistently to urologists, radiation oncologists and oncologists and, thereby, to the patient. This paper reflects the current recommendations of the 2004 World Health Organization-sponsored International Consultation, which was co-sponsored by the College of American Pathologists. It builds on the existing work of several organizations, including the College of American Pathologists, the Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathologists, the Royal Society of Pathologists, the European Society of Urologic Pathology and the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer.  相似文献

Background

Atherosclerosis is progressive and diffuse pathological disorders which can simultaneously affect multiple vascular beds. Diagnosing Lower extremities peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in patients with Coronary artery disease (CAD) admitted to cardiac rehabilitation program can help to tailor exercise regimen to fit these patients, in addition, early treatment and/or intervention may help to control progression of the disease.

Aim

The study is to search for the prevalence of undiagnosed PAD using ankle brachial index (ABI) in Egyptian patients with documented CAD undergoing cardiac rehabilitation program.

Patients and Methods

The study included 200 patients with documented CAD scheduled for cardiac rehabilitation in Cardiology department, Ain Shams University, with exclusion of patients with known (diagnosed) PAD. All patients underwent ABI using Doppler ultrasonography. The patients were divided into two groups; Study group with positive ABI (≤?0.9) and Control group with negative ABI (>?0.9).

Results

We found that the prevalence of undiagnosed PAD in those patients was 14.5% (29 patients). The incidence of PAD is increased in patients above 60 years (p?=?0.001) and in presence of hypertension/uncontrolled systolic blood pressure (p?=?0.002), Dyslipidemia (p?=?0.005), or family history of ischemic heart disease (p?=?0.035). PAD is associated also with impaired left ventricular systolic function and presence of segmental wall motion abnormalities at rest. Impaired eGFR increased the risk of development of PAD (p?=?0.016). PAD was associated more with patients presented by multivessel lesions by coronary angiography and in presence of ischemic ECG changes.

Conclusion

This study shows that significant PAD is present in almost 15% of ischemic Egyptian patients. We recommend ABI to be done routinely in patients with significant CAD for exclusion or diagnosis of PAD to help in treatment and improving quality of life in addition to modification of cardiac rehabilitation program in presence of PAD according to its severity.  相似文献

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a potent growth factor for many tissues including the gastrointestinal tract. EGF is present in the gut lumen and is absorbed through the mucosa in the developing animals. In addition, EGF has been found to alter the immune system. In this study, we investigated thein vitro effect of EGF on normal colonic lamina propria lymphocyte DNA synthesis and ornithine decarboxylase activity. Human colonic lamina propria lymphocytes were isolated by collagenase-EDTA digestion. The effect of EGF on Con A-stimulated lymphocyte thymidine incorporation was tested. We observed that EGF suppressed DNA synthesis and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity in lamina propria lymphocytes. EGF did not alter the time course of thymidine incorporation into LPL stimulated by the combination of phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate (PDB) and ionomycin. Our data suggest that (1) EGF suppresses DNA synthesis in human colonic lamina propria lymphocytes as well as ODC activity and (2) this inhibition may be mediated through protein kinase C or calcium flux. Background:

The gene–environment interaction in the pathogenesis of hypertension has not been extensively studied in occupational noise.

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between noise and hypertension in Egyptian workers, the interaction of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphisms as modifiers, and the possible relationship between noise hearing impairment and hypertension.

Methods:

Study subjects were divided into two groups depending on noise exposure level. The control group (n = 161) was exposed to noise intensity <85 dB and the exposed group (n = 217) was exposed to noise intensity ≧85 dB. A polymerase chain reaction was used to differentiate the various genotypes of ACE insertion/deletion (I/D) and ACE G2350A.

Results:

Noise significantly increased the likelihood of hypertension. Carriers of the genotypes AG, GG, and DD were vulnerable to hypertension on noise exposure. No association between hypertension and hearing impairment or noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) was found.

Conclusion:

Our results support the association between ACE gene polymorphisms and occurrence of hypertension in noise-exposed workers.  相似文献

Introduction

Minimal invasive fixation has been reported as an alternative option for treatment of acetabular fractures to avoid blood loss and complications of extensive approaches. Closed reduction and percutaneous lag screw fixation can be done in minimally displaced acetabular fractures. Open reduction is indicated, if there is wide displacement. In this study, we report the use of a mini-open anterior approach to manipulate and reduce anteriorly displaced transverse acetabular fractures combined with percutaneous lag screw fixation.

Methods

This report included eight patients. All had anterior displaced simple transverse acetabular fractures. An oblique mini-incision was made above and medial to the mid-inguinal point, and lateral to the lateral border of rectus abdominis muscle. The external abdominal oblique aponeurosis was incised along its fibres. The arched fibres of internal abdominal oblique were displaced medially above the inguinal ligament to expose and incise the fascia transversalis. Care was taken to avoid injury of ilioinguinal nerve, inferior epigastric vessels, and spermatic cord. The external iliac vessels were palpated and protected laterally. A blunt long bone impactor was introduced through this small incision to manipulate and reduce the fracture under fluoroscopic control. Fluoroscopic guided percutaneous lag screw fixation was done in all patients.

Results

The average time to operation was 4 days. Average blood loss was 110 mL. Operative time averaged 95 min. Maximum fracture displacement averaged 10 mm preoperatively and 1.3 mm postoperatively. According to Matta score, anatomical reduction of the fracture was achieved in five patients and imperfect in three. Follow up averaged 27 months. Wound healing occurred without complications and fracture union was achieved without secondary displacement in all patients. Average time to fracture healing was 14 weeks. According to the modified Merle d’Aubigné score, functional outcome was good to excellent in all patients.

Discussion and conclusion

Limited open reduction can solve the problem of fracture reduction, which is the main concern in minimal invasive fixation of acetabular fractures. It may help the inclusion of displaced acetabular fractures for percutaneous lag screw fixation. This mini-para-rectus approach has the advantages of minimal soft tissue dissection with the possible anatomical reduction of simple transverse displaced acetabular fractures.  相似文献

In this study, we aimed to optimize theophylline pellet formulations using a two-factor three-level full-factorial design (32) by monitoring the concentration of two pellet excipients, polyvinyl pyrrolidone K30 (PVP) binder solution (X1) and the hydrophilic excipient mannitol (X2). Their impact on pellet characteristics (responses) were evaluated. Increasing PVP concentration in the binder solution resulted in an increase in the wet mass torque value. The effect of mannitol, however, was antagonistic. Moreover, the pellet particle size was significantly influenced by the level of mannitol, PVP solution, and quadratic effect of mannitol. Mannitol significantly antagonized the pellet particle size. Furthermore, increased mannitol concentrations significantly enhanced drug dissolution rate from the pellets, whereas PVP concentration in the binder solution significantly reduced the drug dissolution rate. In conclusion, wet granulations can be controlled by monitoring the composition of the binder solution and pellet composition.  相似文献
