Attempt at predicting paraphrenic outcome in young, first admitted schizophrenic patients

A sample of 110 consecutive first admission young schizophrenic patients treated between 1964 and 1967 was rediagnosed in 1981. Among 92 survivors, 27 could be labelled as paraphrenics. From information available at inception 97 variables were coded covering such areas as personality, previous disturbances, age and type of onset, and symptoms around admission. Sixty-three out of 97 variables were hypothesized to differentiate, at admission, future paraphrenics from the rest of the sample. Paraphrenics were found to have had less contact disturbance, better self-esteem, less neurotic symptoms in adolescence and childhood, and less complaints of unhappiness when growing up. They had more regressive and paranoid symptoms at admission, were older at onset of the disease, which was more acute, more often connected with precipitating events, and confusion. Certain non-regressive symptoms such as brooding, anhedonia and concentration difficulties were less common. A discriminant analysis yielded a proportion of correct predictions = 0.64 (p less than 0.05). The results are in accordance with the theory of more favourable energetic and organizational capacity in paranoid schizophrenics as compared with non-paranoids.     

Morphology of corticotectal cells in the primary visual cortex of hooded rats

In primary visual cortex of hooded rats, pyramidal cells in layer V may be classified as long, medium, or short, on the basis of the layer in which the apical dendrite terminates. The present study determines which of these types of pyramidal cells project to the superior colliculus. Two different strategies were used to label corticotectal cells with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). In the first set of experiments, a large number of corticotectal cells were labeled by retrograde transport following injection of HRP into the superior colliculus. In the second set of experiments, single unit recording was used to identify corticotectal cells physiologically by antidromic activation from the superior colliculus. These cells were then impaled and labeled by intracellular iontophoresis of HRP. The results from both techniques suggest that only long pyramidal cells send an axon to the superior colliculus. These cells are distinguished by an apical dendrite that extends into layer I. We conclude that in hooded rats corticotectal cells in primary visual cortex are the long pyramids in layer V.     

Chromosome aberrations in patients irradiated for pelvic tumours

Peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients undergoing radiation therapy for pelvic tumours have been examined for the presence of dicentric and centric ring chromosomes. Blood samples were taken, by venipuncture, prior to the first radiotherapy session and 24 h after radiotherapy sessions to allow the mixing of the irradiated lymphocytes in the circulating blood. The yield of dicentrics and centric rings was best fitted by a straight line which, according the maximum likelihood method, corresponds to Y = 1.77 +/- 0.0003 10(-2) D. On this basis the dose inducing ten dicentrics or rings is 5.62 Gy at the target volume and, thus, is intermediate between the doses at the target volumes displaying the same effects in patients treated for mammary carcinoma (15 Gy) or for ankylosing spondylitis (2 Gy).     

Radiation dosimetry of iodine-123 HEAT, an alpha-1 receptor imaging agent

Biologic distribution data in the rat were obtained for the alpha-1 adrenoceptor imaging agent (+/-) 2-[beta-(iodo-4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylaminomethyl]tetralone (HEAT) labeled with [125I]. The major excretory routes were through the liver (67%) and the kidney (33%). Internal radiation absorbed dose estimates to nine source organs, total body, the GI tract, gonads, and red bone marrow were calculated for the human using the physical decay data for [123I]. The critical organ was found to be the lower large intestine, receiving 1.1 rad per mCi of [123I]HEAT administered. The total-body dose was found to be 58 mrad per mCi.     

Skin Granulomas due to Mycobacterium gordonae

A 38-year-old woman presented with small, ulcerated, red or bluish nodules on the right hand, clinically resembling mycobacterial granulomas; these appeared a few months after a bite by a rat, while the patient was collecting frogs in a pond in the Belgian Ardennes. The histopathologic picture was compatible with a diagnosis of mycobacterial infection and rare acid-fast bacilli could be found. Repeated bacteriologic investigations were performed and these led to the identification of a strain displaying characteristics of Mycobacterium gordonae. The skin condition responded well to rifampicin (300 mg/day) within 6 months.
