In this work, we studied the phases in a Mg-Ti-O system using a 1:1 formulation of MgO:TiO2, mixing synthetic brucite of Mexican origin with TiO2 microparticles of high purity, with a heat treatment at 1100 °C for 1 h. Due to its valence electrons, TiO2 can contribute to the sintering process to improve density in MgO products. The raw materials and formulation by XPS and X-RD techniques were characterized. The results demonstrate the presence of different oxidation states in titania and the formation of different oxides in the Mg-Ti-O system when mixed and calcined at 1100 °C; additionally, we estimated the formation of vacancies in the crystal lattice during the transformation from hexagonal brucite to magnesia with a cubic structure centered on the faces. Its thermal behavior is indicated by the MgO-TiO2 phase diagram.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo describe the use of the Internet by primary care patients to seek health related information, understand how they are influenced by this information, and evaluate its impact on the doctor-patient relationship.DesignCross sectional study, through self-administered survey.SettingOne urban health center in Madrid.ParticipantsA total of 323 questionnaires were collected from patients between 14 and 75 years old who attended a physician's office for any reason, excluding illiterate patients and those with neurological or psychiatric problems preventing them from completing the survey.MeasurementsInternet usage, ability of the internet to clarify doubts regarding health issues, patient lifestyle changes, socio-demographic variables, and physician's receptivity to the use of internet by patients.Results61% (CI 95%: 56%-67%) of patients used the Internet as a source of health information: Internet queries were able to address health doubts in 92.4% of users, 53.5% reported that the Internet changed their thinking about their health in at least one instance, 30% made behavioral changes (of which 60.1% discussed these changes with their physician), 44.3% had more questions at the physician's office, and 80.8% believe that the doctor would be willing to talk about the information found on the internet.ConclusionsUsing the Internet to find information about health is very common, with positive influence on physician-patient relationship. This may be useful for achieving behavioral changes in patients and can be used as a tool in medical practice.  相似文献

Objective:To identify changes in the prevalence and severity of recurrent wheezing (RW) in infants using data obtained from two surveys administered seven years apart. Methods: A cross-sectional, international, population-based study in infants aged 12–15 months was conducted. Data were obtained from two surveys (S1 and S2, in 2005 and 2012, respectively) using the same methodology in three large Latin American cities: Curitiba (Brazil), São Paulo (Brazil), and Santiago (Chile). Results: A decrease in the overall prevalence of RW was identified between S1 (23.3%) and S2 (20.4%), p = 0.004, but it was mainly driven by the reduction observed in São Paulo; in Curitiba and Santiago, this change was not significant. The mean prevalence of the following RW severity indicators remained high and stable: severe wheezing episodes (56.9% in S1 and 54.2% in S2, p = 0.32) and emergency department (ED) visits for wheezing (S1 = 68.1%, S2 70.9%, p = 0.21). A significant increase in admissions for wheezing (21.1% to 26.7%, p = 0.004) was observed. In Curitiba and São Paulo, there were significant increases in the prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma and in the use of inhaled corticosteroids and oral antileukotrienes. Conclusions: The prevalence and severity of RW during the first year of life remained high over time, with remarkably high rates of ED visits, admissions for wheezing and use of asthma medications. This study suggests the need for considering early asthma diagnosis and to establish an appropriate treatment in infants with recurrent and severe asthma-like symptoms.  相似文献

At the European Institute of Oncology, Milan, Italy, we have focused our interest on the use of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) in limited-stage breast cancer that is conservatively treated. A new technique to perform IORT was applied in 185 patients from July 1, 1999, to October 31, 2001. As the surgeon plays a crucial role in this procedure in selecting the patients, performing the breast resection, preparing the gland as a target to receive IORT, delivering the radiation directly to the mammary gland via a dedicated applicator, and, finally, reconstructing the breast, each phase of the surgical technique has been completely standardized and is described herein. The use of IORT in the conservative treatment of breast cancer could allow the course of external fractionated-dose radiation therapy to be completely avoided; IORT dramatically reduces radiation exposure of the skin, lung, and subcutaneous tissues and avoids the irradiation of the contralateral breast, which contributes to a very low incidence of radiation-induced sequelae. In our experience, IORT for limited-stage breast carcinoma is easy to perform and only briefly prolongs the duration of the surgical procedure.  相似文献

The mechanisms by which aging induces muscle impairment are not well understood yet. We studied the impact of aging on Ca2+ homeostasis in the slow-twitch soleus and the fast-twitch extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles of aged rats by using the fura-2 fluorescent probe. In both muscles aging increases the resting cytosolic calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i). This effect was independent on calcium influx since a reduced resting permeability of sarcolemma to divalent cations was observed in aged muscles likely due to a reduced activity of leak channels. Importantly the effects of aging on resting [Ca2+]i, fiber diameter, mechanical threshold and sarcolemmal resting conductances were less pronounced in the soleus muscle, suggesting that muscle impairment may be less dependent on [Ca2+]i in the slow-twitch muscle. The treatment of aged rats with growth hormone restored the resting [Ca2+]i toward adult values in both muscles. Thus, an increase of resting [Ca2+]i may contribute to muscle weakness associated with aging and may be considered for developing new therapeutic strategies in the elderly.  相似文献

Bone homeostasis requires stringent regulation of osteoclasts, which secrete proteolytic enzymes to degrade the bone matrix. Despite recent progress in understanding how bone resorption occurs, the mechanisms regulating osteoclast secretion, and in particular the trafficking route of cathepsin K vesicles, remain elusive. Using a genetic approach, we describe the requirement for protein kinase C–delta (PKCδ) in regulating bone resorption by affecting cathepsin K exocytosis. Importantly, PKCδ deficiency does not perturb formation of the ruffled border or trafficking of lysosomal vesicles containing the vacuolar‐ATPase (v‐ATPase). Mechanistically, we find that cathepsin K exocytosis is controlled by PKCδ through modulation of the actin bundling protein myristoylated alanine‐rich C‐kinase substrate (MARCKS). The relevance of our finding is emphasized in vivo because PKCδ?/? mice exhibit increased bone mass and are protected from pathological bone loss in a model of experimental postmenopausal osteoporosis. Collectively, our data provide novel mechanistic insights into the pathways that selectively promote secretion of cathepsin K lysosomes independently of ruffled border formation, providing evidence of the presence of multiple mechanisms that regulate lysosomal exocytosis in osteoclasts. © 2012 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.  相似文献

Physical inactivity is associated with alteration of normal physiologic processes leading to muscle atrophy, reduced exercise capacity, insulin resistance, and altered energy balance. Bed rest studies in human beings using stable isotopes of amino acids indicate that muscle unloading decreases the turnover rates of muscle and whole-body proteins, with a prevailing inhibition of protein synthesis. In the fasting state, muscle and whole-body nitrogen loss was not accelerated during bed rest. In experimental postprandial states, the amino acid-mediated stimulation of protein synthesis was impaired, whereas the ability of combined insulin and glucose infusion to decrease whole-body proteolysis was not affected by muscle inactivity. Thus, an impaired ability of protein/amino acid feeding to stimulate body protein synthesis is the major catabolic mechanism for the effect of bed rest on protein metabolism. This suggests that a protein intake level greater than normal could be required to achieve the same postprandial anabolic effect during muscle inactivity. Metabolic adaptation to muscle inactivity also involves development of resistance to the glucoregulatory action of insulin, decreased energy requirements, and increased insulin and leptin secretion. These alterations may lead to the development of the metabolic syndrome that is defined as the association of hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and abdominal obesity. This cluster of metabolic abnormalities is a risk factor for coronary artery disease and stroke. Evidence indicates that exercise training programs may counteract all of these abnormalities both in healthy sedentary subjects and in patients affected by a variety of chronic disease states.  相似文献
