The pathology of atherosclerotic lesions that develop in mouse models of atherosclerosis, such as those lacking apolipoprotein E or lacking the low density lipoprotein receptor, is very similar to that seen in human patients. Consequently, genetic approaches to studying atherosclerosis in these mouse models have produced a wealth of information relevant to the genetic factors and pathways that modify the early stages of atherosclerosis in humans. Despite these advances, the later stages of atherosclerosis in humans, including spontaneous plaque rupture and hemorrhage, have not been observed reliably in current mouse models. Increasing sophistication and use of genetic manipulations, however, has produced significant advances in modeling these processes. The use of genetic tools to examine the physiology, pathology, and cell biology of atherosclerosis will enhance elucidation of the pathogenesis of the disease and lead to the development of novel therapeutic strategies. 相似文献

Respondents were primarily women (72%). At baseline, 12.8% of patients disposed of medication appropriately. Respondents frequently flushed medications down the toilet (27.2%) or incorrectly dumped medications in the trash (34.6%). Only 30.9% had received previous advice on safe medication disposal. Posteducation survey results indicated that 80.1% of respondents were willing to change their disposal methods. Increased numbers of respondents viewed inappropriate medication disposal as a moderate to substantial problem (from 57.2% preeducation to 83.9% posteducation). Of participants, 59.7% strongly agreed that student pharmacists were a good resource for information on safe medication disposal.ConclusionAdditional public education on safe medication disposal is needed. Access to oral health care continues to be a problem in the United States. Research has called for innovative approaches to improve access to oral health care and reduce oral health care disparities. Successful alternate approaches have been reported. In 1998 the Kansas Legislature passed a proposal to enhance access to care and manpower needs by allowing dental assistants to provide supragingival scaling, a service traditionally assigned to dental hygienists. In 2000, Mitchell et al. investigated the perceptions of Kansas dental hygienists and scaling dental assistants in relation to House Bill 2724 (HB 2724), which allows dental assistants to perform coronal scaling. The intent of the study was to collect baseline data in relation to HB 2724. The purpose of the present study was to follow up on the impact of HB 2724 six years after legislation. Both groups report satisfaction with their professions: scaling dental assistants believe the delivery of care in Kansas has changed, and areas of Kansas previously noted as dental health professional shortage areas are now served by either a registered dental hygienist or scaling dental assistant. 相似文献

A chief concern regarding distance education for the health professions is quality of the experience. Distance education has the potential for expanding student access, providing individualized instruction, and promoting active learning among geographically separated members of learning groups. Students and professors who have participated in distance learning platforms have expressed concerns about technical problems, inability to interact in real time with each other, and other frustrations related to this type of delivery. The Dental Hygiene program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has addressed these issues and enhanced an already successful program by putting the professor, a technologist, and the student in the same space, at the same time, in real time. This enhancement has substantiated the ability of distance education to provide instruction among geographically separated members of learning groups, making it a plausible solution to the shortage of educators in healthcare professions. 相似文献

Preterm premature rupture of membranes is the rupture of membranes during pregnancy before 37 weeks' gestation. It occurs in 3 percent of pregnancies and is the cause of approximately one third of preterm deliveries. It can lead to significant perinatal morbidity, including respiratory distress syndrome, neonatal sepsis, umbilical cord prolapse, placental abruption, and fetal death. Appropriate evaluation and management are important for improving neonatal outcomes. Speculum examination to determine cervical dilation is preferred because digital examination is associated with a decreased latent period and with the potential for adverse sequelae. Treatment varies depending on gestational age and includes consideration of delivery when rupture of membranes occurs at or after 34 weeks' gestation. Corticosteroids can reduce many neonatal complications, particularly intraventricular hemorrhage and respiratory distress syndrome, and antibiotics are effective for increasing the latency period. 相似文献

We investigated the efficacies and durability of novel antimicrobial central venous catheters (CVCs) in preventing the adherence of microbial organisms to the surfaces of the CVCs. Novel antimicrobial CVCs investigated in this in vitro study were impregnated with antibiotics (minocycline and rifampin), with Oligon agent (silver, platinum, and carbon black), with approved antiseptics (chlorhexidine and silver sulfadiazine), or with a novel antiseptic agent, gendine, which contains gentian violet and chlorhexidine. When tested against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, gendine-coated CVC segments provided protection against bacterial adherence significantly more than all other types of tested CVCs (P < 0.05). Gendine-coated CVCs also provided better protection against Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis than CVCs impregnated with antibiotics or with silver, platinum, and carbon (P < 0.02). After 28 days of being soaked in serum, the CVCs impregnated with chlorhexidine and silver sulfadiazine and the CVCs impregnated with silver, platinum, and carbon had lost antimicrobial activity against MRSA, P. aeruginosa, and C. parapsilosis, and the CVCs impregnated with minocycline and rifampin had lost activity against P. aeruginosa and C. parapsilosis. The CVCs impregnated with gendine maintained antimicrobial activities against MRSA, P. aeruginosa, and C. parapsilosis after 28 days of being soaked in serum. Central venous catheters impregnated with the novel investigational antiseptic gendine showed in vitro efficacy and provided protection against bacterial adherence more than other approved novel antimicrobial-coated CVCs. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To compare the analysis of different forms of intact albumin in urine from healthy volunteers. To determine contamination by common non-albumin proteins on HPLC analysis of urinary albumin and of purified immuno-unreactive albumin. DESIGN AND METHODS: Overnight urine samples collected from healthy volunteers were analysed for total albumin (immunoreactive plus immuno-unreactive) by HPLC and densitometry following native PAGE separation and for immunoreactive albumin by RIA. The contamination by non-albumin proteins of the HPLC analysis of urinary albumin and of immuno-unreactive albumin preparations was determined by ELISA. Immuno-unreactive albumin was tested for Co2+-binding capacity. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: HPLC analysis of healthy urine generates higher ACR values than immunological methods due to the presence of immuno-unreactive albumin. Immuno-unreactive albumin cannot be accounted for by the non-albumin urinary proteins tested. Isolated immuno-unreactive albumin is not recognised by antibodies to common urinary proteins or by an array of anti-albumin antibodies and behaves like serum albumin in terms of HPLC elution, native PAGE migration, and cobalt ion binding. 相似文献
