The cavernous body in the lamprey gill filament was studied by electron microscopy. This body lies along the outer border of the axial plate of each gill filament and freely communicates with an afferent filament artery. Two series of blood channels run alternately, passing through the cavernous body, and lead to the marginal channels in the secondary lamellae. On the other hand, narrow blood spaces left in the cavernous body lead to the blood lacunae in the axial plate (osmoregulatory region) and to those in the secondary lamellae (respiratory region). All the blood in the cavernous body is finally collected by an efferent filament artery. The cavernous body is traversed by numerous trabeculae and collagenous columns which run diagonally in the blood spaces to connect the walls of the cavernous body. All the walls of the cavernous body, including trabeculae and collagenous columns, are completely surrounded by the cytoplasmic flanges of specialized cells called here “cavernous body cells.” These cells are about 30 μm in diameter and characterized by (1) association with collagenous columns or trabeculae and also by the presence of (2) coated caveolae and vesicles, (3) vacuoles and (4) cytoplasmic granules in their cytoplasm. These cells are considered to be related to the pillar cells in origin because of their close association with collagenous columns or trabeculae. The functional significance of the cavernous body and the cavernous body cells is discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the increase of platelet-associated IgG and complement component 3 (C3) caused by the in vitro action of anti-platelet MoAbs, and the effect of mouse and human IgG on these events. Anti-glycoprotein IIb/IIIa and anti-glycoprotein Ib MoAbs caused a slight increase of C3, but not of platelet-associated IgG. In contrast, anti-CD9 and anti-Fcγ II receptor MoAbs caused an increase of both platelet-associated C3 and IgG. In particular, three MoAbs which activated the complement system caused a marked increase of C3. When platelet-rich plasma was treated with aspirin and prostaglandin E1 before incubation with antibodies, the increase of platelet-associated IgG was inhibited in all cases. In contrast, the increase of platelet-associated C3 was scarcely influenced. These results suggest that the binding to platelets of platelet-activating antibodies caused the increase expression of IgG molecules on the platelet surface and a possible increase of platelet-associated IgG. However, the increase of platelet-associated C3 appeared to depend on specific characteristics of the antibodies tested, such as a complement-activating effect. In addition, intact mouse or human IgG inhibited the increase of platelet-associated C3 caused by complement-activating antibodies, while F(ab')2 mouse or human IgG had no such effect. This suggested that the Fc portion of IgG may block the increase of C3 mediated by anti-platelet antibodies.  相似文献

An MRL strain of mice bearing a Fas-deletion mutant gene, lpr, MRL/MpJ-lpr/lpr (MRL/lpr) develops collagen disease involving vasculitis, glomerulonephritis, arthritis and sialoadenitis, each of which has been studied as a model for polyarteritis, lupus nephritis, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren’s syndrome, respectively. Development of such lesions seems dependent on host genetic background since the congenic C3H/HeJ-lpr/lpr (C3H/lpr) mice rarely develop them. To identify the gene loci affecting each lesion, a genetic dissection of these complex pathological manifestations was carried out. First, histopathological features in MRL/lpr, C3H/lpr, (MRL/lpr × C3H/lpr) F1 intercross, and MRL/lpr × (MRL/lpr × C3H/lpr) F1 backcross mice were analyzed. Genomic DNA of the backcross mice were subjected to association studies by Chi-squared analysis for determining which polymorphic microsatellite locus occurs at higher frequency among affected compared to unaffected individuals for each lesion. As a result, gene loci recessively associated with each lesion were mapped on different chromosomal positions. We concluded that each of these lesions in MRL/lpr mice is under the control of a different set of genes, suggesting that the complex pathological manifestations of collagen disease result from polygenic inheritance.  相似文献

A surgical case of an aggressive form of adenoid squamous cell carcinoma of the penis was studied. The histological features of the tumor originating from the coronal region of the penis showed a well differentiated keratinized squamous cell carcinoma in the superficial area, which transformed into, with a zone of transition in between, an alveolar structure in the deep invading portion and in the metastatic tumor in the inguinal lymph nodes. The alveolar lining cells exhibited an undifferentiated appearance with prominent nucleoli, frequent mitotic figures, and vascular invasion. These cells were neither dyskeratotic nor acanthotic as described in the literatures. Mucin was negative in the tumor cells and angiosarcoma was ruled out with a sliver impregnation technique. The patient took a rapid downhill course for the ordinary squamous cell carcinoma of the penis, and he expired eight months after penile amputation with a radiological evidence of lung metastasis. These unusual pathological features and an aggressive behavior of this tumor which were not hitherto described for adenoid squamous cell carcinomas necessitated this report. The effects of high and low dietary fat (20% vs. 0.5% corn oil), and of the prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor indomethacin (0.005% w/w), on tumour incidence, tumour growth, hormone-receptor status and growth-factor expression were examined in dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA)-induced rat breast cancer. The high dietary-fat group showed a significantly higher tumour incidence, larger tumour size and larger number of bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU)-positive cells of tumours as compared with those in the low dietary-fat group. Indomethacin reduced tumour incidence significantly, but conversely increased the tumour size and the number of BrdU-positive cells in both the high and the low dietary-fat groups. No significant difference was noted in the hormone-receptor status of the tumours. Growth factors (TGF-alpha and IGF-II) were somewhat highly expressed in the high dietary-fat group as compared with the low dietary-fat group, but indomethacin rather reduced the growth-factor expression. It is concluded that high dietary fat stimulates tumour incidence and tumour proliferation, while indomethacin has dual effects: a stimulating effect on tumour proliferation, but an inhibiting effect on tumour incidence. It is also suggested that hormone-receptor status and growth-factor expression do not play an important role in their stimulating effects on tumour proliferation.  相似文献

Intraplacental choriocarcinoma is very rare, and is usually found only after maternal and fetal metastatic disease is identified. The purpose of this case report is to review the incidence and findings of intraplacental choriocarcinoma. A term placenta was investigated because the newborn was born with severe anemia (Hb 3.0 g/dL). A 2 cm nodule was noted on the surface of the amniotic membrane and grossly resembled an infarction. The tumor was examined microscopically with immunohistochemical staining for the alpha- and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (alpha-hCG, beta-hCG) subunits, human placental lactogen (hPL) and Ki-67. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of necrotic areas with proliferation of atypical trophoblastic cells and destruction of the villi and capillaries. The cells were positive for the alpha-hCG, beta-hCG subunits, hPL and Ki-67, consistent with intraplacental choriocarcinoma. The mother and newborn were investigated for the presence of metastatic disease. Computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging of the mother and infant were negative for metastatic disease. Choriocarcinoma, limited only to the placenta with no evidence of metastatic disease is very rare. Primary intraplacental choriocarcinoma may frequently be overlooked or missed, and choriocarcinoma may possibly arise in the placenta more often than in retained or persistent trophoblast following pregnancy.  相似文献

The Thoratec (Vectra) polyurethane vascular access graft (TPVA) is among the most recent additions to the list of materials used to construct prosthetic grafts for vascular access during hemodialysis. We give the TPVA very high marks, and recognize the utility of such a graft for use in hemodialysis. However, the strong elasticity of this graft can lead to unexpected complications after suturing. We devised a new surgical method using a TPVA-ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) composite graft, substituting the anastomosis section of the TPVA with a portion of ePTFE graft material, and have been able to overcome most of the TPVA's potential problems. The prototype cone-beam CT (CBCT) has a larger beam width than the conventional multi-detector row CT (MDCT). This causes a non-uniform angular distribution of the x-ray beam intensity known as the heel effect. Scan conditions for CBCT tube current are adjusted on the anode side to obtain an acceptable clinical image quality. However, as the dose is greater on the cathode side than on the anode side, the signal-to-noise ratio on the cathode side is excessively high, resulting in an unnecessary dose amount. To compensate for the heel effect, we developed a heel effect compensation (HEC) filter. The HEC filter rendered the dose distribution uniform and reduced the dose by an average of 25% for free air and by 20% for CTDI phantoms compared to doses with the conventional filter. In addition, its effect in rendering the effective energy uniform resulted in an improvement in image quality. This new HEC filter may be useful in cone-beam CT studies.  相似文献

We describe a five-month-old male infant with Coffin-Siris syndrome, the so-called Dandy-Walker variant (hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis with cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, but without enlargement of the posterior fossa), and partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. Dandy-Walker malformation and mega cisterna magna, but not Dandy-Walker variant, have been reported in Coffin-Siris syndrome. The presence of Dandy-Walker variant in the infant we described confirms that the full continuum of the Dandy-Walker complex can occur in Coffin-Siris syndrome. The yet unidentified gene(s) for the syndrome may be related to the development of the hindbrain.  相似文献

Investigations of the Ia afferent discharge in clarifying problems in disused and malused skeletal muscles have been carried out mainly in muscles of the upper extremities. However, such problems actually occur more frequently in the antigravity muscles of the lower extremities, such as the triceps surae muscle. An analysis of microneurographically recorded Ia discharges from the tibial nerve innervating the triceps surae muscle during dynamic movement of the ankle joint indicated that they mainly transmitted information on the angular velocity of the joint. However, the information on the position sense of the joint was not as well transmitted through Ia discharges. There was no correlation between the joint angle and the static response. However, the dynamic response of a Ia afferent was well correlated to the angular velocity. It is concluded that the human proprioception of the triceps surae muscle was not dependent on the position of the ankle joint, but largely on its movement by the stretching of the muscle.  相似文献
