Edentulousness in relation to remodeling of the gonial angles and incisures in dentate and edentate mandibles: morphometric study using the Image J software

Purpose

The human mandible is subject to stimuli during its growth phase and also in adulthood. One of these stimuli may be absence of teeth, which gives rise to mandibular remodeling. Morphological changes may occur in different areas of this bone, such as in the gonial, condylar and ramus regions.

Objective

To investigate the influence of edentulousness on remodeling of the gonial angle of the mandible and the angle formed by the mandibular incisure.

Materials and method

Eighty-five dry mandibles from adults were examined: 42 from males and 43 from females. The mandibles were photographed using a camera coupled to a static support that was positioned 20 cm from the object to be photographed. The images were digitized and transferred to the Image J 1.42q software, in which the gonial angle of the mandible and the mandibular incisure angle were measured.

Results

There were no differences in the mandibular and mandibular incisure angles in relation to presence or absence of teeth, or between the right and left sides. The mandibular incisure angle was greater in the women.

Conclusion

Edentulousness did not cause remodeling of the gonial angle of the mandible or in the mandibular incisure angle.

Scaling the primate lateral geniculate nucleus: Niche and neurodevelopment in the regulation of magnocellular and parvocellular cell number and nucleus volume

New stereological assessments of lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) neuron numbers and volumes in five New World primates (Cebus apella, Saguinus midas niger, Alouatta caraya, Aotus azarae, and Callicebus moloch) and compiled LGN volumes for an additional 26 mammals were analyzed for a better understanding of visual system evolution. Both the magnocellular (M)‐ and the parvocellular (P)‐cell populations scale allometrically with brain volume in primates, P cells with a significantly higher slope such that, for every increase in M neuron number, P neuron numbers more than double (ln scale; y = 0.89x + 2.42R² = 0.664). In diurnal primates, the ratio of P to M cells was slightly but significantly higher than in nocturnal primates. For all mammals, including primates, LGN volume was unrelated to nocturnal or diurnal niche but showed marked differences in slope and intercept depending on taxonomic group. The allometric scaling of M and P cells can be related to the order of neurogenesis, with late‐generated P cells increasing with positive allometry compared with the earlier‐generated M cells. This developmental regularity links relative foveal representation to relative isocortex enlargement, which is also generated late. The small increase in the P/M cell ratio in diurnal primates may result from increased developmental neuron loss in the M‐cell population as it competes for limited termination zones in primary visual cortex. Seventeen years of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in a Southern Brazilian municipality

We reviewed the records of 151 patients diagnosed with American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) from 1993 to 2009 in the municipality of Japura, Paraná, Brazil. Gender, age, occupation, place of residence, location of lesions, type and number of lesions were analyzed. The prevalence rate of ACL was 11.5/10,000 hab, of which 84.7% were male, 58.3% lived in rural area and 49.0% were farmers. The most frequent age group was between 30 to 39 years (26.6%). Skin lesions occurred in 92.7% of the patients with predominance in the lower limbs (23.9%) and 49.1% of the records did not include the number of lesions location due to incomplete filling. A single ulceration was present in 44.4%. Japurá is an endemic area for ACL, requiring public actions and preventive education.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is one of the most prevalent forms of chronic liver disease in the Western world. Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid in humans that may be a promising therapy for treating this disease.     

Hydrogen peroxide release kinetics into saliva from different whitening products: a double-blind, randomized clinical trial

The objective of this study is to compare salivary hydrogen peroxide (HP) release kinetics and potential toxicity of systemic exposure of four different whitening products. A double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in a Portuguese dental faculty clinic. Two hundred forty volunteers were randomized to eight intervention groups. Participants were randomly assigned to receive active or placebo applications of one of four different products: Opalescence 10% PF™ (OPL), Vivastyle? 10%™ (VS10%), Vivadent Paint On Plus™ (PO+), and Trés White Supreme™ (TWS). Saliva collection was obtained by established methods at different times. The HP salivary content was determined by a photometric method. Salivary HP variations, total amount of salivary HP, and counts of subjects above the safe daily HP dose were the main outcome measures. All whitening systems significantly released HP to the saliva when compared to placebo, and all showed different release kinetics. The adaptable tray system (TWS) presented a risk increase of 37% [20–54%, 95% confidence interval] when compared to the other systems. The use of an adaptable tray whitening system with higher concentration of HP increases the toxicity potential.
