Geochemical fractionation of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and nickel (Ni) were determined using five-stage sequential extraction in sediments collected from estuarine stretches of Cauvery River delta on the eastern coast of India with emphasis on seasonal variation. Abundance of metals in terms of sum of total fractionations varied in the following order: Fe > Mn > Cr > Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb. Exchangeable fraction, believed to be bioavailable, showed differential abundances during the dry and wet seasons in the following order: Pb > Zn > Cu > Mn > Ni > Cr > Fe and Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Mn > Pb > Fe, respectively, indicating the possibility of anthropogenic influence. Among nonlithogenic fraction, organic matter–bound fraction is the second largest and a key scavenger for all of the heavy metals studied except Fe and Mn. A significant portion of Cu-associated organic matter fraction shows strong association of Cu with organic matter at most of the sampling sites. Environmental risk of metals evaluated using risk-assessment code and mobility factor showed low to high risk for Pb, Zn, and Cu. The results of the present study also hint at notable enrichment of heavy metals in the certain pockets of the Cauvery Estuary.  相似文献

Recently we identified in Brugia malayi adult worm extract (BmA) a pro-inflammatory 54–68 kDa SDS-PAGE resolved fraction F6 that protects the host from the parasite via Th1/Th2 type responses. We are currently investigating F6 as a potential source of vaccine candidate(s) and the present study is aimed at investigating the suitability of poly(d,l)-lactide-co-glycolide microspheres (PLGA-Ms) as immunoadjuvant for the antigen administration in a single dose. PLGA-Ms were prepared aseptically by a modified double emulsion (w/o/w) solvent evaporation technique and their size, shape, antigen adsorption efficiency, in-process stability, and antigen release were characterized. Swiss mice were immunized by a single subcutaneous administration of BmA and F6 adsorbed on PLGA-Ms (lactide:glycolide ratios 50:50 and 75:25) and the immune responses were compared with administration of 1 or 2 doses of plain BmA and F6. Specific IgG, IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, IgE levels in serum, cellular-proliferative response and release of IFN-γ, TNF-α and nitric oxide from the cells of immunized host in response to the antigens/LPS/Con A challenge and antibody-dependant cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) to parasite life stages were determined. The average size of PLGA-Ms 50:50 was smaller than the size of PLGA-Ms 75:25 and the % antigen adsorption efficiency of PLGA-Ms 50:50 was greater than PLGA-Ms 75:25. Single shot injection of PLGA-Ms 50:50/75:25-BmA/F6 produced better and stronger IgG, IgG1/IgG2a and cell-mediated immune responses than even two injections of plain BmA or F6. Further, PLGA-Ms 50:50-F6 produced stronger responses than PLGA-Ms 50:50-BmA. Anti-PLGA-Ms 50:50-F6 antibodies elicited higher ADCC response to infective larval and microfilarial stages of the parasite than anti-PLGA-Ms 75:25-F6 antibodies. The findings demonstrate that PLGA-Ms 50:50 is an excellent adjuvant for use with F6 in a single administration. This is the first ever report on PLGA as immunoadjuvant for filarial antigens.  相似文献

Malnutrition among families living in poorer communities has increased in the past two decades. Initiatives advocated by the World Bank include microfinance programs. Research attributing the success of these programs however, has mixed results. In this article we investigate how additional income provided by microfinance is associated with increased consumption of nondurables for households in rural villages in Bangladesh. For our purposes we compare consumption or money expensed on food, medicine, doctor fees, and smoking. Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) procedure was used to address multiple comparison issues among households. Our findings reinforce the importance of microfinance credit as a safety net. Access to additional income for poor villagers improves the consumption of basic needs as expected, regardless of how many loans are taken; consumption of “bads” remains virtually the same.  相似文献

The complementary feeding period is an important stage of child development. The study aim was to develop an index reflecting the degree of adherence to complementary feeding guidelines, evaluate its convergent validity, and explore associations with socio-demographic factors and dietary pattern scores in childhood. Data were analyzed from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (n = 6065) using parent-completed dietary questionnaires at 6 mo of age, socio-demographic information, and dietary patterns derived by principal component analysis at age 3 y. The Complementary Feeding Utility Index (CFUI) consists of 14 components: breastfeeding duration, feeding to appetite, timing of introduction to solids, exposure to iron-rich cereals, fruit and vegetable intake, exposure to high-fat/-salt/-sugar foods including sugary drinks, food texture, and meal/snack frequency. Regression analyses were undertaken to investigate associations between index scores, socio-demographic factors, food and nutrient intakes, and dietary pattern scores at age 3 y. Milk and food intake at 6 mo and nutrient intake at 8 mo of age varied across quintiles of index score in largely the expected directions. Associations were found among index score, maternal age, education, social class, maternal smoking history, and prepregnancy BMI. After adjustment for socio-demographic factors, the index score was associated with "processed" [β = -0.234 (95% CI = -0.260, -0.209)] and "healthy" [β = 0.185 (95% CI = 0.155, 0.215)] dietary pattern scores at age 3 y. The CFUI is able to discriminate across food intake, nutrient intake, and socio-demographic factors and is associated with later dietary patterns.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: We describe a system for the automated diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma using fundus and optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. Automatic screening will help the doctors to quickly identify the condition of the patient in a more accurate way. The macular abnormalities caused due to diabetic retinopathy can be detected by applying morphological operations, filters and thresholds on the fundus images of the patient. Early detection of glaucoma is done by estimating the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL) thickness from the OCT images of the patient. The RNFL thickness estimation involves the use of active contours based deformable snake algorithm for segmentation of the anterior and posterior boundaries of the retinal nerve fiber layer. The algorithm was tested on a set of 89 fundus images of which 85 were found to have at least mild retinopathy and OCT images of 31 patients out of which 13 were found to be glaucomatous. The accuracy for optical disk detection is found to be 97.75%. The proposed system therefore is accurate, reliable and robust and can be realized.  相似文献

A new class of chalcones, aurones and flavones derived from carbazole is designed as potential antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. Synthesis of (Z)-2-((9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)methylene)benzofuran-3(2H)-ones and 2-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-4H-chromen-4-ones was carried out by the oxidation of (E)-3-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-ones under microwave irradiation and conventional heating. All the newly synthesized compounds were characterized on the basis of IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, mass and analytical data. All the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activities. Synthesized compounds were screened in vitro for antibacterial activity against two gram-positive bacterial strains like Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis and two gram-negative bacterial strains like Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia and antifungal activity by inhibitory action against three fungal strains like Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus. The synthesized compounds were also evaluated for their DPPH radical scavenging activity. All the newly synthesized compounds have shown good antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activities.  相似文献

Background

Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are one of the most common birth defects in humans. Maternal use of folate antagonists including dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors has been associated with a higher risk of OFCs thus suggesting that folate-related metabolism and associated genes may be involved in pathogenesis of OFC. The association between folate intake and risk of OFCs however is inconsistent.

Objective

To review the published evidence that polymorphisms in genes that affect folate metabolism are associated with an increased risk of OFCs.

Methods

We reviewed articles published up until October 2010, on polymorphisms of genes related to folate and homocysteine metabolism and their associations with OFCs. Articles were identified via Medline searches.

Conclusions

No consistent evidence emerged of a strong association between risk of OFCs and any known gene related to folate metabolism. Further, recent genome-wide association studies have not identified associations between OFCs and folate-related genes. Further studies are warranted to determine whether gene–environment interactions, including gene–nutrient interactions and epigenetic modifications of genes affect the risk of OFCs.  相似文献
