The working group for the future planning of the Japanese Association of Anatomists (JAA) has been working to address the issues that were consulted from the president of JAA since October 2009. After making the interim report in March 2010, a public hearing for general members of the JAA was held and a final report was submitted to the President in January 2011. The report contains the analysis of the current situation, the directions in which we should proceed, and recommendations of concrete actions that JAA should take for each issue. The issues discussed were as follows: 1. Future prospects of anatomy and morphological sciences. How can we maintain the specialties of morphological and anatomical sciences in the rapidly advancing field of life sciences and develop collaborations with other fields? 2. Improvement of the JAA academic meetings. How can we increase JAA members and young participants in the academic meetings of the JAA? 3. Fostering the next generation of young researchers. How can we increase young researchers graduated from the schools of Medicine or Dentistry? 4. Future prospects of education of gross anatomy. A case of nonfunctioning parathyroid carcinoma in a 69-year-old female has been studied by light and electron microscopy. The tumor, located on the left side of the anterior neck, was well encapsulated by connective tissue but showed invasion to the capsule and to the thyroid. The tumor cells exhibited a trabecular arrangement surrounded by capillary networks but focally showed several ductal structures. They were polygonal in shape, had a large nucleus showing frequent mitosis and poor cytoplasm containing glycogen. Some tumor cells had clear and abundant cytoplasm, and resembled water-clear cells of the parathyroid. Immunohistochemically, no thyroglobulin was demonstrated in the tumor tissue. Electronmicroscopically, the tumor cells with high N/C ratio contained poorly developed cell organelles and abundant glycogen particles. They were poor in secretory granules and had no conglomeration of lipid. Desmosomes and tonoflbrils were observed. The ratio of the reported number of nonfunctioning parathyroid carcinoma to that of functioning one in Japan was compared with that in western countries. No difference of the ratio was found between these two, when identical criteria were employed. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze correlations among the annual rate of gray matter volume change, age, gender, and cerebrovascular risk factors in 381 healthy community‐dwelling subjects with a large age range by applying a longitudinal design over 6 years using brain magnetic resonance images (MRIs). Brain MRI data were processed with voxel‐based morphometry using a custom template by applying diffeomorphic anatomical registration using the exponentiated lie algebra procedure. The annual rate of regional gray matter volume change showed significant positive correlations with age in several regions, including the bilateral temporal pole, caudate nucleus, ventral and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices, insula, hippocampus, and temporoparietal cortex, whereas significant negative correlations with age were observed in several regions including the bilateral cingulate gyri and anterior lobe of the cerebellum. Additionally, a significant age‐by‐gender interaction was found for the annual rate of regional gray matter volume change in the bilateral hippocampus. No significant correlations were observed between the annual rate of regional gray matter volume change and body mass index or systolic blood pressure. A significant positive correlation between the annual rate of gray matter volume change and age indicates that the region shows not linear but accelerated gray matter loss with age. Therefore, evaluating the annual rate of the gray matter volume change with age in healthy subjects is important in understanding how gray matter volume changes with aging in each brain region and in anticipating what cognitive functions are likely to show accelerated decline with aging. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) was localized in nerve terminals that innervate arginine-vasopressin (AVP)-containing neurons in the rat hypothalamic supraoptic nucleus (SON). PACAP receptor (PACAPR) mRNA was expressed at high-levels in AVP-containing neurons in the SON, but at very low-levels in oxytocin-containing neurons. PACAPR-like immunoreactivity was found in SON and it was observed in the post-synaptic membranes as well as on the rough endoplasmic reticulum and cytoplasmic matrices in the magnocellular neurons. Doses of PACAP in the nanomolar range increased cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+]i) in AVP-containing neurons; the increase in [Ca2+]i was inhibited by a protein kinase A blocker. These findings suggest that PACAP serves as a transmitter and/or modulator and the activation of PACAPR stimulates a cAMP-protein kinase A pathway which in turn evokes the Ca2+ signaling system. It is hypothesized that PACAP regulates the functions of AVP-containing neurons which participate in the control of plasma osmolarity and blood pressure. 相似文献

Human uterine cervical tissue is composed mainly of fibroblast cells and the extracellular matrix in which collagen types I and III predominate. It is hypothesized that these collagens are degraded by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the initial step of uterine cervical ripening during parturition. Among the MMPs, MMP-1, -8 and -13 have substrate selectivity for collagen types I and III. In the present study, we examined the regulation of MMP-1 secretion from the human uterine cervix. Immunohistochemistry detected strong staining of MMP-1, but not of MMP-8 or -13, in stromal cells of the pregnant uterine cervix. The MMP-1 expression in the pregnant uterine cervix was further confirmed by Western blot analysis and RT-PCR. To clarify the regulation of MMP-1 production, we subsequently investigated the effects of prostaglandins, inflammatory cytokines and cyclic mechanical stretch on the secretion of MMP-1 from cultured human uterine cervical fibroblast cells. Treatment with prostaglandin (PG)F(2alpha) (10(-7) to 10(-5) mol/l) or interleukin (IL)-1alpha (0.01-1.0 ng/ml) or stimulation with cyclic mechanical stretch increased MMP-1 secretion from cultured human uterine cervical fibroblast cells, with maximal increases of 3.4-, 4.5- and 1.9-fold respectively (24 h of treatment, P < 0.05 for all comparisons). These data suggest that MMP-1 may play a significant role in the degradation of extracellular collagen types I and III in the pregnant uterine cervix during the process of cervical ripening, in response to various stimulations such as PGF(2alpha), IL-1alpha and mechanical stretch. 相似文献

A Japanese woman presenting with neurologic symptoms was presumptively diagnosed with neurocysticercosis based on imaging findings. Hooklets in the scolex of the resected lesion were not confirmed through histopathological observation. Natural killer (NK) cell lymphomas/leukemias are highly aggressive lymphoid malignancies, but little is known about their genomic alterations, and thus there is an urgent need for identification and analysis of NK cell lymphomas/leukemias. Recently, we developed our own array-based comparative genomic hybridization (array CGH) with an average resolution of 1.3 Mb. We performed an array CGH analysis for 27 NK-cell lymphoma/leukemia cases that were classified into two disease groups based on the World Health Organization Classification (10 aggressive NK-cell leukemia cases and 17 extranodal NK/T-cell [NK/T] lymphomas, nasal type). We identified the differences in the genomic alteration patterns of the two groups. The recurrent regions characteristic of the aggressive NK-cell leukemia group compared with those of the extranodal NK/T lymphoma, nasal-type group, were gain of 1q and loss of 7p15.1-p22.3 and 17p13.1. In particular, gain of 1q23.1-24.2 (P = 0.041) and 1q31.3-q44 (P = 0.003-0.047), and loss of 7p15.1-p22.3 (P = 0.012-0.041) and 17p13.1 (P = 0.012) occurred significantly more frequently in the former than in the latter group. Recurrent regions characteristic of the extranodal NK/T lymphoma, nasal-type group, compared with those of the other group were gain of 2q, and loss of 6q16.1-q27, 11q22.3-q23.3, 5p14.1-p14.3, 5q34-q35.3, 1p36.23-p36.33, 2p16.1-p16.3, 4q12, and 4q31.3-q32.1. Our results can be expected to provide further insights into the genetic basis of lymphomagenesis and the clinicopathologic features of NK-cell lymphomas/leukemias. 相似文献
