Introduction

Emblica officinalis L. commonly known as gooseberry, Phyllanthus emblica, Emblica, Indian gooseberry, amla is used in Indian system of medicine for the treatment of liver ailments.

Aim and Objectives

In the present study, we report that it ameliorates the carcinogenic response as it reverses the histopathological changes and reduces the number of γ-GT-positive foci induced by Solt Farber protocol in the liver of Wistar rats.

Materials and Methods

Tumors were induced by initiation with diethylnitrosoamine (DEN) (200 mg/kg body wt., i.p.) followed by promotion with 2-acetylaminoflourine (2-AAF) (0.02%, w/w in diet) for continuous 6 weeks and the animals were subjected to partial hepatectomy on day 21 of initiation.

Results

Pretreatment with defatted methanolic fruit extract (100 and 200 mg/kg b.w.) of Emblica officinalis showed significant partial recovery of pathological manifestations as compared to DEN and 2-AAF-treated group animals (p < 0.001) and suppressed the tumor forming potential of 2-AAF (p < 0.05) at both the doses.

Conclusion

Emblica officinalis has the potential to suppress carcinogen-induced response in rat liver.  相似文献

Allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐HSCT) poses a significant challenge to renal function due to multiple drug‐ and complication‐related renal toxicity. In this single‐center series of 216 adult Asian patients with a long and complete follow‐up, 41 developed chronic kidney disease (CKD) giving a cumulative incidence of 19.0% at 25 years (median follow‐up duration 7.84 years, range 2.0‐27.7 years), but only two of the 41 patients reached stage 4 CKD and another two required dialysis. In contrast, acute kidney injury occurred in most patients, where glomerular filtration rate (GFR) suffered a mean fall of 50 mL/min/1.73 m2 at 6 months post‐transplant compared with baseline. Suppression of renal function may last beyond 6 months but is potentially reversible, although not to baseline level in most patients. Analysis of a comprehensive range of 18 risk factors showed that older age, lower GFR at transplant, unrelated donor, diagnosis of AML, presence of diabetes mellitus at transplant, and duration of foscarnet use were significantly associated with CKD development, with the first three remaining as independent risks for CKD in multivariate analysis. Long‐term survival is not affected by renal function, being 78.6% as compared to 85.5% for patients with low vs normal GFR at 2 years, respectively.  相似文献

Diabetes mellitus has become a troublesome and increasingly widespread condition. Treatment strategies for diabetes prevention in high-risk as well as in affected individuals are largely attributed to improvements in lifestyle and dietary control. Therefore, it is important to understand the nutritional factors to be used in dietary intervention. A decreased risk of diabetes is associated with daily intake of millet-based foods. Pearl millet is a highly nutritious grain, nutritionally comparable and even superior in calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals to other large cereals, although its intake is confined to lower income segments of society. Pearl millet contains phenolic compounds which possess antidiabetic activity. Thus, it can be used to prepare a variety of food products for diabetes mellitus. Moreover, it also has many health benefits, including combating diabetes mellitus, cancer, cardiovascular conditions, decreasing tumour occurrence, lowering blood pressure, heart disease risk, cholesterol, and fat absorption rate. Therefore, the current review addresses the role of pearl millet in managing diabetes.  相似文献

This study is focused on the kinetics and adsorption isotherms of amine-functionalized magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) for treating the heavy metals in wastewater. A sol-gel route was adopted to produce MgFe2O4 nanoparticles. The surfaces of the MgFe2O4 nanoparticles were functionalized using primary amine (ethanolamine). The surface morphology, phase formation, and functionality of the MgFe2O4 nano-adsorbents were studied using the SEM, UV-visible, FTIR, and TGA techniques. The characterized nanoparticles were tested on their ability to adsorb the Pb2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ ions from the wastewater. The kinetic parameters and adsorption isotherms for the adsorption of the metal ions by the amine-functionalized MgFe2O4 were obtained using the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Langmuir, and Freundlich models. The pseudo-second order and Langmuir models best described the adsorption kinetics and isotherms, implying strong chemisorption via the formation of coordinative bonds between the amine groups and metal ions. The Langmuir equation revealed the highest adsorption capacity of 0.7 mmol/g for the amine-functionalized MgFe2O4 nano-adsorbents. The adsorption capacity of the nanoadsorbent also changed with the calcination temperature. The MgFe2O4 sample, calcined at 500 °C, removed the most of the Pb2+ (73%), Cu2+ (59%), and Zn2+ (62%) ions from the water.  相似文献

Few studies have reported hormonal agent use in the treatment of low-grade serous ovarian carcinomas (LGSOCs), which are chemoresistant. Considering the need for novel effective therapies, we investigated the hormone receptor expression and hormonal inhibition efficacy in LGSOCs. Using immunohistochemistry, we assessed the estrogen receptor (ER) expression status in 33 cases of histologically confirmed serous ovarian tumors, including 10, 11, and 12 cases of LGSOCs, serous borderline tumors (SBTs), and serous cystadenomas (SCAs), respectively. The genetic background reported in our previous study was used in the current study. MPSC1 cells, which were established from LGSOCs, were used in cell proliferation assays. We observed a higher ER expression in LGSOCs and SBTs than in SCAs (70%, 81%, and 50%, respectively). Thus, LGSOCs and SBTs exhibit higher ER expression than SCAs. Moreover, the PIK3CA mutation positively correlated with ER expression in LGSOCs (p = 0.0113). MPSC1 cells showed low ER expression on Western blotting. MPSC1 cell proliferation was significantly inhibited by fulvestrant (a selective ER downregulator). The activation of ER and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways may play an important role in LGSOC carcinogenesis. ER downregulation with fulvestrant or combination therapy with PI3K inhibitors is a possible novel treatment for patients with LGSOCs.  相似文献

Present investigation explores the cardiotoxicity of rosiglitazone (ROSI) using rat heart cardiomyocytes and db/db mice. In H9c2 cells, ROSI at 50 and 60 μM induced an increase in the percentage of apoptotic cells and superoxide generation, along with an increase in the expression of various subunits of NADPH oxidase and nitric oxide synthases, confirmed that ROSI-induced apoptosis in H9c2 cells is by ROS generation. The increase in the expression of the antioxidants like superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) further confirmed this notion. Heme oxygenase-1, having an important role in cell protection against oxidative stress, was found to be increased along with induction of nuclear translocation of NF-E2-related factor and increased protein kinase C δ expression. Moreover, in db/db mice, oral administration of ROSI (10 mg/kg) for 10 days induced an increase in serum creatinine kinase-MB, tissue antioxidants like SOD, catalase, GR, GST, GPx expression, cardiac troponin T, and inducible nitric oxide synthase protein expression strongly support the in vitro findings. Furthermore, global gene expression studies also showed the perturbation of oxidative phosphorylation, fat cell differentiation, and electron transport chain following ROSI treatment in vivo. These results suggested that ROSI-induced cardiac damage is due to accelerated apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo.  相似文献

The use of ZnO as a photocatalyst with a reduced recombination rate of charge carriers and maximum visible light harvesting remains a challenge for researchers. Herein, we designed and synthesized a unique La/ZnO/CNTs heterojunction system via a sol–gel method to evaluate its photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution. A ferrocene powder catalyst was tested for the production of CNT forests over Si/SiO2/Al2O3 substrate. A chemical vapor deposition (CVD) route was followed for the forest growth of CNTs. The La/ZnO/CNTs composite showed improved photocatalytic efficiency towards hydrogen evolution (184.8 mmol/h) in contrast to 10.2 mmol/h of pristine ZnO. The characterization results show that promoted photocatalytic activity over La/ZnO/NTs is attributed to the spatial separation of the charge carriers and extended optical absorption towards the visible light spectrum. The optimum photocatalyst shows a 16 h cycle performance for hydrogen evolution. The H2 evolution rate under visible light illumination reached 10.2 mmol/h, 145.9 mmol/h and 184.8 mmol/h over ZnO, La/ZnO and La/ZnO/CNTs, respectively. Among the prepared photocatalysts, ZnO showed the lowest H2 evolution rate due to the fast recombination of electron–hole pairs than heterojunction photocatalysts. This research paves the way for the development of ZnO and CNT-based photocatalysts with a wide optical response and reduced charge carrier recombinations.  相似文献

Healthcare workers are at a high risk of violence all over the world. The hostility toward nurses, physicians, and hospital staff has reached the point that it can be considered a public health problem. In this paper, we focus on the harassment, aggression, and violence that many healthcare workers have encountered while treating unstable psychiatric patients in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. We present a case with a history of violence toward mental health workers, review psychopathological and clinical aspects, and discuss how both the COVID-19 pandemic and current challenges in psychiatric hospital settings increase the frequency and severity of these attacks and how this affects the team on inpatient psychiatric units. We used the CARE guidelines to provide the most accurate and transparent information about the patient and relevant psychosocial aspects. We also pooled more than 20 unique sources to cover all aspects of violent behaviors in all psychiatric settings for all age groups. We concluded that a lack of nursing staff, the mental burden imposed by difficult patients, and poor communication between team members are some of the factors contributing to patient violence. An incomplete understanding of the problem creates barriers to change on both personal and systematic levels. Constant violence and abuse against healthcare workers cause stress, decreased productivity, and work dissatisfaction. To improve the safety of healthcare professionals, especially in inpatient psychiatric settings, several system-based changes should be implemented.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to determine the impact of counseling and educational leaflets on contraceptive practices of couples. STUDY DESIGN: Randomization of 600 women was done in two groups matched for age, parity and socioeconomic status at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Shifa Foundation Community Health Centre, Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad, Pakistan. In Group A, the intervention group was exposed to contraceptive counseling and educational leaflets in the postnatal ward after delivery, whereas in Group B, the nonintervention group was not given any formal contraceptive advice. Later on, both groups were assessed regarding their contraceptive practices. RESULTS: At their follow-up visit (8-12 weeks) postpartum, 19 (6.3%) women in the nonintervention group had started contraceptive use, whereas 153 (50.8%) had decided to start contraception in the next 6 months, and 129 (42.8%) women were still undecided. The main contraceptive user was the male partner (n=117, 38.8%), and the most common method used was coitus interruptus (n=62, 36.3%). In the intervention group, 170 women (56.9%) had started using contraceptives, whereas 129 (43.1%) had decided to start contraceptive use in the next 6 months. The predominant contraceptive user was the females (n=212-70.9%), and the most popular method chosen was oral contraceptive pills (n=111, 37.1%). CONCLUSION: There is a definite increase in contraceptive uptake in women provided with educational leaflets and counseling session with a shift toward use of more reliable contraceptive methods.  相似文献
