The endovenous revolution has accelerated the development of new techniques and devices for the treatment of varicose veins. The ClariVein® mechanochemical ablation device offers tumescentless treatment with a rotating ablation tip that can theoretically become stuck in tissue. We present the first report of retrograde stripping of the small saphenous vein without anaesthesia following attempted use of the ClariVein® device, without adverse sequelae.  相似文献

Background and Purpose: During repeat-dose toxicity studies, ECGs are collected from chemically or physically-restrained animals over a short timeframe. This is problematic due to cardiovascular changes caused by manual restraint stress and anesthesia, and limited ECG sampling. These factors confound data interpretation, but may be overcome by using a non-invasive jacket-based ECG collection (JET). The current study investigated whether a jacketed external telemetry system could detect changes in cardiac intervals and heart rate in non-human primates (NHPs), previously implanted with a PCT transmitter.Experimental Approach: Twelve male cynomolgus monkeys were treated weekly with vehicle or sotalol (8, 16, 32 mg kg−1) p.o. ECGs were collected continuously for 24 hours, following treatment, over 4 weeks. A satellite group of six NHPs was used for sotalol toxicokinetics.Key Results: Sotalol attained Cmax values 1–3 hours after dosing, and exhibited dose-proportional exposure. In jacketed NHPs, sotalol dose-dependently increased QT/QTc intervals, prolonged PR interval, and reduced heart rate. Significant QTc prolongation of 27, 54 and 76 msec was detected by JET after 8, 16, and 32 mg kg−1 sotalol, respectively, compared with time-matched vehicle-treated animals. Overall, JET-derived PR, QT, QTc intervals, QRS duration, and heart rate correlated well with those derived from PCT.Conclusions and Implications: The current findings clearly support the use of JET to quantify cardiac interval and rhythm changes, capable of detecting QTc prolongation caused by sotalol. JET may be a preferred method compared to restraint-based ECG because high-density ECG sampling can be collected in unstressed conscious monkeys, over several weeks.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze the association of potential risk factors such as positive family cleft history, smoking, use of drugs during pregnancy, and parental age with oral clefts in offspring within the Kosovo population. We conducted a population-based case-control study of live births in Kosovo from 1996 to 2005. Using a logistic regression model, 244 oral cleft cases were compared with 488 controls. We have excluded all syndromic clefts. Heredity increases the risk of clefts in newborns [odds ratio (OR) = 8.25, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.12–23.52]. Clefts were also associated with smoking (OR = 1.87, 95% CI 0.75–4.08), use of drugs during pregnancy (OR = 2.25, 95% CI 0.82–5.12), increasing maternal age (OR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.42–2.49), and increasing paternal age (OR = 1.3, 95% CI 1.2– 1.4). We found heredity to be the most important factor for cleft occurrence in Kosovar newborns. Another significant potential risk factor for occurrence of clefts is the parental age. We found the use of drugs and smoking during pregnancy to be less significant.Key words: Oral clefts, Cleft lip with or without cleft palate, Cleft palate only, Potential risk factors, Logistic regression model, Dummy variablesCleft lip with or without cleft palate and isolated cleft palate are the most common facial birth defects. The etiology involves complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors.1 Genetic factors appear to create the most susceptibility for clefts. When environmental factors (i.e., triggers) interact with a genetically susceptible genotype, a cleft develops during an early stage of development.2 The aim of this study was to analyze the association of potential risk factors such as positive family cleft history, smoking, use of drugs during pregnancy, and parental age with oral clefts in offspring in Kosovo. Risk factors vary among populations, and our ultimate goal was to provide data that may show new potential risk factors influencing the occurrence of clefts in Kosovo. With this new information, we hope to increase public awareness of such risks and thereby help reduce the incidence of cleft in Kosovo.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Cure from seizures due to cavernomas might be surgically achieved dependent on both, the complete removal of the cavernoma as well as its surrounding hemosiderin rim. High field intraoperative MRI imaging (iopMRI) and neuronavigation might play a crucial role to achieve both goals. IgG4‐related disease (IgG4‐RD) has emerged as a new entity in the last decade. It comprises numerous conditions previously thought to be unrelated. Macroscopically, these diseases cause diffuse organ swelling and formation of pseudotumorous masses. Histopathologically, they are characterized by a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate with increased IgG4+ plasma cells and storiform fibrosis. Despite rapid progress within the last years, our knowledge on these conditions is still fragmented. To date, more than forty organs have been reported to be included in IgG4‐RD, and salivary gland involvement is amongst the most common organs affected [IgG4‐related sialadenitis (IgG4‐RS)]. Interestingly, IgG4‐RS shares commonalities with Sjögren's syndrome (SS), like glandular enlargement, sicca symptoms, arthralgias, hypergammaglobulinemia, hypocomplementemia, and circulating antinuclear antibodies. Nonetheless, they differ in that the incidence of anti‐Ro and anti‐La reactivity is not frequently found in patients with IgG4‐RS, their salivary glands are infiltrated by a large number of IgG4+ plasma cells and IgG4‐RS symptoms respond promptly to steroids. The aim of this review was to describe the clinical, serological, histopathological and pathophysiological aspects of IgG4‐RS in the context of IgG4‐RD and highlight the differences between IgG4‐RS and SS.  相似文献
