Poly(methacrylic acid) (P(MAA)), poly(acrylamide) (P(AAm)) and poly(3-acrylamidopropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride) (P(APTMACl)) were synthesized as anionic, neutral and cationic hydrogels, respectively. The synthesized hydrogels have the ability to be used as absorbents for the removal of selected heavy metal ions such as Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ from aqueous media. Absorption studies revealed that the absorption of metal ions by the hydrogels followed the order Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ > Zn2+. For the mechanism of absorption, both Freundlich and Langmuir absorption isotherms were applied. Metal ion entrapped hydrogels were treated using an in situ chemical reduction method in order to convert the metal ions into metal nanoparticles for the synthesis of hybrid hydrogels. The synthesis and morphology were confirmed using FT-IR and SEM, while the absorbed metal amounts were measured using TGA and AAS. The hybrid hydrogels were further used as catalysts for the reduction of macro (methylene blue, methyl orange and congo red) and micro (4-nitrophenol and nitrobenzene) pollutants from the aqueous environment. The catalytic performance and re-usability of the hybrid hydrogels were successfully investigated.

Persons with non-A, non-B hepatitis (cases) identified in 5 transfusion studies in the early 1970s have been followed ever since and compared for outcome with matched, transfused, non-hepatitis controls from the same studies. Previously, we reported no difference in all-cause mortality but slightly increased liver-related mortality between these cohorts after 18 years follow-up. We now present mortality and morbidity data after approximately 25 years of follow-up, restricted to the 3 studies with archived original sera. All-cause mortality was 67% among 222 hepatitis C-related cases and 65% among 377 controls (P = NS). Liver-related mortality was 4.1% and 1.3%, respectively (P =.05). Of 129 living persons with previously diagnosed transfusion-associated hepatitis (TAH), 90 (70%) had proven TAH-C, and 39 (30%), non-A-G hepatitis. Follow-up of the 90 TAH-C cases revealed viremia with chronic hepatitis in 38%, viremia without chronic hepatitis in 39%, anti-HCV without viremia in 17%, and no residual HCV markers in 7%. Thirty-five percent of 20 TAH-C patients biopsied for biochemically defined chronic hepatitis displayed cirrhosis, representing 17% of all those originally HCV-infected. Clinically evident liver disease was observed in 86% with cirrhosis but in only 23% with chronic hepatitis alone. Thirty percent of non-A, non-B hepatitis cases were unrelated to hepatitis viruses A,B,C, and G, suggesting another unidentified agent. In conclusion, all-cause mortality approximately 25 years after acute TAH-C is high but is no different between cases and controls. Liver-related mortality attributable to chronic hepatitis C, though low (<3%), is significantly higher among the cases. Among living patients originally HCV-infected, 23% have spontaneously lost HCV RNA.  相似文献

Our objective was to measure the incidence of humoral immune response against Trypanosoma cruzi among patients with a definitive diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy at the Instituto Nacional de Cardiología "I. Chávez" over a year. Thirty seven patients were collected, 15 of them (40%) had antibodies against T. cruzi in two different tests, indirect immunofluorescence and ELISA, the presence of IgG antibody was confirmed through Western blot. There was not differences in clinical picture of cardiomyopathy nor on paraclinical studies. However, there was a significant difference in regard socio economical indexes between the group with positive anti T. cruzi antibodies. They had a predominant rural origin, poor housing and were aware of the vector bug. Also they recalled primary infection in their childhood--American trypanosomiasis could be on important etiologic factor for dilated cardiomyopathy in our country.  相似文献

Background. Many technological devices have been used to avoid intraoperative bleeding during hepatic parenchymal transection and to avoid morbidity and mortality, but until now none is complete. The aim of this work is to prospectively analyze hepatic resection patients treated with a water-cooled high frequency monopolar device in order to evaluate its effectiveness. Patients and methods. All consecutive patients who underwent liver resection by use of this device, between January 2003 until December 2007, were analyzed prospectively. The following variables were considered: age, sex, kind of disease, kind of liver resection, number of major/minor resections, total operative time and transection time, number and time of clamping, blood loss, time of hospitalization, morbidity, and mortality. Results. Between January 2003 and December 2007, 26 patients were analyzed prospectively (69% women, 31% men). Ages ranged from 18 to 84 years. Sixty-five percent of patients had a malignant disease; 35%, a benign disease. The procedures performed were two major hepatectomies (7.6%) and 24 minor hepatectomies (92.4%). Hepatic transection was performed in 35 to 150 min. Total operative time range was 120–480 min. The average blood loss was 325 ml (range 50–600 ml). The mean postoperative stays were nine days for all the patient and six days for non-cirrhotic patients. Conclusion. The water-cooled high frequency monopolar device is useful for reducing ischemia–reperfusion damage due to the Pringle maneuver and for reducing the risk of morbidity. However, the Kelly forceps remains the only inexpensive instrument really essential for liver surgery.  相似文献

BACKGROUNDPatients with p16+ oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) are potentially cured with definitive treatment. However, there are currently no reliable biomarkers of treatment failure for p16+ OPSCC. Pathologist-based visual assessment of tumor cell multinucleation (MN) has been shown to be independently prognostic of disease-free survival (DFS) in p16+ OPSCC. However, its quantification is time intensive, subjective, and at risk of interobserver variability.METHODSWe present a deep-learning–based metric, the multinucleation index (MuNI), for prognostication in p16+ OPSCC. This approach quantifies tumor MN from digitally scanned H&E-stained slides. Representative H&E-stained whole-slide images from 1094 patients with previously untreated p16+ OPSCC were acquired from 6 institutions for optimization and validation of the MuNI.RESULTSThe MuNI was prognostic for DFS, overall survival (OS), or distant metastasis–free survival (DMFS) in p16+ OPSCC, with HRs of 1.78 (95% CI: 1.37–2.30), 1.94 (1.44–2.60), and 1.88 (1.43–2.47), respectively, independent of age, smoking status, treatment type, or tumor and lymph node (T/N) categories in multivariable analyses. The MuNI was also prognostic for DFS, OS, and DMFS in patients with stage I and stage III OPSCC, separately.CONCLUSIONMuNI holds promise as a low-cost, tissue-nondestructive, H&E stain–based digital biomarker test for counseling, treatment, and surveillance of patients with p16+ OPSCC. We report here the genetic basis for a form of progressive hereditary spastic paraplegia (SPG43) previously described in two Malian sisters. Exome sequencing revealed a homozygous missense variant (c.187G>C; p.Ala63Pro) in C19orf12, a gene recently implicated in neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). The same mutation was subsequently also found in a Brazilian family with features of NBIA, and we identified another NBIA patient with a three‐nucleotide deletion (c.197_199del; p.Gly66del). Haplotype analysis revealed that the p.Ala63Pro mutations have a common origin, but MRI scans showed no brain iron deposition in the Malian SPG43 subjects. Heterologous expression of these SPG43 and NBIA variants resulted in similar alterations in the subcellular distribution of C19orf12. The SPG43 and NBIA variants reported here as well as the most common C19orf12 missense mutation reported in NBIA patients are found within a highly conserved, extended hydrophobic domain in C19orf12, underscoring the functional importance of this domain.  相似文献
