Following the theoretical notion that tools often extend one’s body, in the present study, we investigated whether imitation
of hand or tool actions is modulated by effector-specific information. Subjects performed grasping actions toward an object
with either a handheld tool or their right hand. Actions were initiated in response to pictures representing a grip at an
object that could be congruent or incongruent with the required action (grip-type congruency). Importantly, actions could
be cued by means of a tool cue, a hand cue, and a symbolic cue (effector-type congruency). For both hand and tool actions,
an action congruency effect was observed, reflected in faster reaction times if the observed grip type was congruent with
the required movement. However, neither hand actions nor tool actions were differentially affected by the effector represented
in the picture (i.e., when performing a tool action, the action congruency effect was similar for tool cues and hand cues).
This finding suggests that imitation of hand and tool actions is effector-independent and thereby supports generalist rather
than specialist theories of imitation. 相似文献

When we are engaged in a joint action, we need to integrate our partner's actions with our own actions. Previous research has shown that in adults the involvement of one's own motor system is enhanced during observation of an action partner as compared to during observation of an individual actor. The aim of this study was to investigate whether similar motor system involvement is present at early stages of joint action development and whether it is related to joint action performance. In an EEG experiment with 3-year-old children, we assessed the children's brain activity and performance during a joint game with an adult experimenter. We used a simple button-pressing game in which the two players acted in turns. Power in the mu- and beta-frequency bands was compared when children were not actively moving but observing the experimenter's actions when (1) they were engaged in the joint action game and (2) when they were not engaged. Enhanced motor involvement during action observation as indicated by attenuated sensorimotor mu- and beta-power was found when the 3-year-olds were engaged in the joint action. This enhanced motor activation during action observation was associated with better joint action performance. The findings suggest that already in early childhood the motor system is differentially activated during action observation depending on the involvement in a joint action. This motor system involvement might play an important role for children's joint action performance. 相似文献

Lately, neuroscience is showing a great interest in examining the functional and neural mechanisms which support action observation and understanding. Recent studies have suggested that our motor skills crucially affect the way in which we perceive the actions generated by others, by showing stronger motor resonance for observation of actions that are established in one's motor repertoire. In the present study we extend previous findings that were based on expert motor skills in adults to the natural development of actions in infants. To investigate the effect of natural motor experience on motor resonance during action observation, 14- to 16-month-old infants' EEG was recorded during observation of action videos. Stronger mu- and beta-desynchronizations were found for observation of crawling compared to walking videos and the size of the effect was strongly related to the infant's own crawling experience. This suggests that already early in life one's own action experience is closely related to how actions of others are perceived. 相似文献

We investigated whether motor planning problems in people with Hemiparetic Cerebral Palsy (HCP) are paralleled by impaired ability to use Motor Imagery (MI). While some studies have shown that individuals with HCP can solve a mental rotation task, it was not clear if they used MI or Visual Imagery (VI). In the present study, motor planning and MI were examined in individuals with right HCP (n = 10) and controls. Motor planning was measured using an object manipulation task, where participants had to anticipate the end of the motor action. MI was measured using a mental rotation paradigm, where participants judged laterality of hands presented from a back view and a palm view. To test if participants used MI or VI we compared reaction times of lateral versus medial rotations, under the assumption that MI is subject to biomechanical constraints of rotated hands, but VI is not. Individuals with HCP had a higher proportion of task failures due to inappropriate grip choice, exemplifying impaired planning. Second, individuals with HCP did not show a reaction time difference between lateral and medial rotations, indicating an impaired ability to use MI. These findings show that compromised motor planning in HCP is paralleled by an impairment in the ability to use MI. Training of MI may be a useful entry-point for rehabilitation of motor planning problems. 相似文献
