Responses to natural scenes in cat V1   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Studies on processing in primary visual areas often use artificial stimuli such as bars or gratings. As a result, little is known about the properties of activity patterns for the natural stimuli processed by the visual system on a daily basis. Furthermore, in the cat, a well-studied model system for visual processing, most results are obtained from anesthetized subjects and little is known about neuronal activations in the alert animal. Addressing these issues, we measure local field potentials (lfp) and multiunit spikes in the primary visual cortex of awake cats. We compare changes in the lfp power spectra and multiunit firing rates for natural movies, movies with modified spatio-temporal correlations as well as gratings. The activity patterns elicited by drifting gratings are qualitatively and quantitatively different from those elicited by natural stimuli and this difference arises from both spatial as well as temporal properties of the stimuli. Furthermore, both local field potentials and multiunit firing rates are most sensitive to the second-order statistics of the stimuli and not to their higher-order properties. Finally, responses to natural movies show a large variability over time because of activity fluctuations induced by rapid stimulus motion. We show that these fluctuations are not dependent on the detailed spatial properties of the stimuli but depend on their temporal jitter. These fluctuations are important characteristics of visual activity under natural conditions and impose limitations on the readout of possible differences in mean activity levels.  相似文献

This study evaluates the effect of strain rate on the biomechanical responses of bovine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disk under compression. Ten specimens derived from the central region of bovine TMJ disks were used for compression tests. Each specimen was loaded upto 20% of strain with seven different strain rates: 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60%/s. Although the stress-strain curves presented similar patterns for all the specimens, the strain-rate effect was obvious. The linear modulus by regression fit for the linear part of the curve was significantly larger at 60%/s of strain rate than at the lower strain rates. The "supplemental stress" ratio (SSR) obviously increased with the augmentation of the strain rate. At strain rates of 30-60%/s, the SSR was significantly larger than those at strain rates below 20%/s. These findings indicate that although water easily can move through the TMJ disk at the lower strain rates, the higher strain rates make such movement difficult. It is concluded that the secondary changes of the TMJ disk may be dependent on the pattern and velocity of masticatory mandibular movements directly associated with the dynamic strain rate in the TMJ disk.  相似文献

The independent release of adenosine and adenine nucleotides upon electrical stimulation was studied in the innervated sartorius muscle of the frog after blockade of the extracellular catabolism of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) through exo-AMP deaminase and ecto-5-nucleotidase. Nerve stimulation (30 min, 0.2Hz) induced the release of both adenosine (19±3 pmol) and adenine nucleotides (101±7 pmol). Experiments performed in the presence of tubocurarine (5 M) to prevent purine release due to nerve-evoked muscle twitching, or under direct stimulation of the muscle in low calcium solutions to prevent pre-synaptic release of purines, showed that there was an evoked release of adenosine and adenine nucleotides both from the nerve endings and from the twitching muscle fibres. Removal of ecto-5-nucleotidase inhibition shows that the catabolism of adenine nucleotides released during stimulation contributes in about 50% to the amount of endogenous extracellular adenosine. When only one of the enzymes catabolizing AMP (ecto-5-nucleotidase or exo-AMP deaminase) was inhibited, the evoked release of adenine nucleotides was undetectable, suggesting that each enzyme is able to catabolize all the AMP formed from adenine nucleotides released upon stimulation. It is concluded that the concentration of endogenous extracellular adenosine is under the control of the relative activities of exo-AMP deaminase and ecto-5-nucleotidase.Brief accounts of some of the results in this study have been published previously (refs. Glioblastoma is an aggressive and fast-growing brain tumor with poor prognosis. Predicting the expected survival of patients with glioblastoma is a key task for efficient treatment and surgery planning. Survival predictions could be enhanced by means of a radiomic system. However, these systems demand high numbers of multicontrast images, the acquisitions of which are time consuming, giving rise to patient discomfort and low healthcare system efficiency. Synthetic MRI could favor deployment of radiomic systems in the clinic by allowing practitioners not only to reduce acquisition time, but also to retrospectively complete databases or to replace artifacted images. In this work we analyze the replacement of an actually acquired MR weighted image by a synthesized version to predict survival of glioblastoma patients with a radiomic system. Each synthesized version was realistically generated from two acquired images with a deep learning synthetic MRI approach based on a convolutional neural network. Specifically, two weighted images were considered for the replacement one at a time, a T2w and a FLAIR, which were synthesized from the pairs T1w and FLAIR, and T1w and T2w, respectively. Furthermore, a radiomic system for survival prediction, which can classify patients into two groups (survival >480 days and 480 days), was built. Results show that the radiomic system fed with the synthesized image achieves similar performance compared with using the acquired one, and better performance than a model that does not include this image. Hence, our results confirm that synthetic MRI does add to glioblastoma survival prediction within a radiomics-based approach.  相似文献

The occurrence and distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) immunoreactivity in the rat respiratory tract were investigated by means of immunocytochemistry and radioimmunoassay using antibodies raised in rabbits to synthetic rat CGRP. Substantial amounts of CGRP immunoreactivity (range 5-37 pmol/g) were detected in all parts of the respiratory tract, the highest being in the stem bronchus. Gel filtration chromatography of extractable CGRP immunoreactivity revealed one single peak, eluting at the position of synthetic rat CGRP. CGRP immunoreactivity was localized both in mucosal endocrine cells and nerve fibres from the larynx down to the peripheral lung. CGRP-immunoreactive endocrine cells were found singly in trachea and stem bronchi and in groups in intrapulmonary airways. They appeared at a late stage of gestation (17 days), reached a maximum number near term and decreased after birth to maintain a population similar to that of the adult animals by postnatal day 21. Similarly, CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibres were first identified by day 18 of the gestation period and reached the adult distribution by postnatal day 21. CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibres were localized among smooth muscle, seromucous glands, beneath and within the epithelium of the airways and around blood vessels. CGRP was also found in sensory ganglia and in motor end plates of the larynx musculature. Neonatal pretreatment with capsaicin caused a marked reduction in CGRP immunoreactivity of nerve fibres in the respiratory tracts as well as a less marked decrease in the population of CGRP-containing endocrine cells of the lung. No change was seen in motor end plates immunostaining. Vagal ligation experiments revealed that CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibres travelling in the vagus originate mainly from neurons located in the jugular ganglion. Infranodosal right vagal ligation induced a marked loss in CGRP-immunoreactive nerves of the trachea, and of the ipsilateral stem bronchus, but no changes were observed in peripheral lung. By contrast infranodosal left side vagal ligation caused a decrease in CGRP-immunoreactive nerves of the ipsilateral lung and bronchus without affecting the peptide content in the trachea. Left vagal ligation also induced a marked increase in both the intensity of staining and number of CGRP-immunoreactive endocrine cells in the lung. We conclude that CGRP immunoreactivity is localized in both nerve fibres and endocrine cells and is associated principally with the afferent (sensory) innervation of the respiratory tract.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Calcitonin gene-related peptide in cardiovascular tissues of the rat   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
The distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide immunoreactivity in the cardiovascular system of the rat was investigated by radioimmunoassay and immunocytochemistry. The nature of the immunoreactivity was studied by gel permeation and high performance liquid chromatography. Immunocytochemistry demonstrated the existence of calcitonin gene-related peptide-containing nerve fibres throughout the cardiovascular system. These were present in all regions of the heart, particularly in association with the coronary arteries, within the papillary muscles and within the sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes. Calcitonin gene-related peptide-containing fibres were found mainly in the adventitia of the arteries and veins. Calcitonin gene-related peptide concentrations were high in major arteries and veins but comparatively low in the heart, aortic arch and thoracic aorta. Chromatography showed that approximately 70% of the total immunoreactivity was identical to synthetic calcitonin gene-related peptide. Calcitonin gene-related peptide concentrations in the blood vessels of rats treated neonatally with capsaicin were not found to be significantly different from those in control animals although capsaicin caused significant reductions of calcitonin gene-related peptide levels in certain other tissues. The results of this study suggest that calcitonin gene-related peptide-containing fibres are likely to be of importance in the innervation of vascular tissues and raise the possibility that these fibres are different in character from calcitonin gene-related peptide-containing fibres found in other tissues.  相似文献

Nuclear and cytoplasmic dLGN neurons were investigated by cytophotometric measurements of RNA. This study has been carried out in rats from birth to adulthood. In order to quantify the RNA content a cytophotometer was used. Extinction mean values were obtained which indicated RNA concentrations per surface unit. The nuclear and cytoplasmic surface were calculated simultaneously and from the product of the mean extinction and the surface the RNA total content was calculated. Our results have suggested that the changes are age-related. From day 1 to day 21 the neuronal size and RNA content increase; this may somehow be involved with the differentiation process. Around post-natal day 21 neuronal maturation may begin, reaching its optimal phase around day 42, on which the RNA concentration per surface unit, surface neuronal content and RNA total content are stable.  相似文献

Sputum and serum from patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), healthy purified protein derivative-positive adults, and patients with bacterial pneumonia were collected to simultaneously assess local immunity in the lungs and peripheral blood. To determine whether cytokine profiles in sputum from TB patients and control subjects were a reflection of its cellular composition, cytospin slides were prepared in parallel and assessed for the presence of relative proportions of epithelial cells, neutrophils, macrophages, and T cells. Gamma interferon (IFN-γ) in sputum from TB patients was markedly elevated over levels for both control groups. With anti-TB therapy, IFN-γ levels in sputum from TB patients decreased rapidly and by week 4 of treatment were comparable to those in sputum from controls. Further, IFN-γ levels in sputum closely followed mycobacterial clearance. Although detected at fourfold-lower levels, IFN-γ immunoreactivities in serum followed kinetics in sputum. TNF-α, interleukin 8 (IL-8) and IL-6 also were readily detected in sputum from TB patients at baseline and responded to anti-TB therapy. In contrast to IFN-γ, however, TNF-α and IL-8 levels also were elevated in sputum from pneumonia controls. These data indicate that sputum cytokines correlate with disease activity during active TB of the lung and may serve as potential early markers for sputum conversion and response to anti-TB therapy.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In this prospective randomized blinded clinical trial, we examined gene expression profiles of the human endometrium during the early and mid-luteal phases of the natural cycle. METHODS: An endometrial biopsy was performed on day 16 (LH +3) or on day 21 (LH +8), followed by RNA extraction and microarray analysis using an Affymetrix HG-U95A microchip. Data analysis was carried out using pairwise multiple group comparison with the significance analysis of microarrays (SAM) software. RESULTS: With a false discovery rate of 0, the analysis revealed that 107 genes were significantly and differently expressed (> or =2-fold) during the early versus the mid-luteal phase of the cycle. Forty-five of these genes have not been previously linked to endometrial receptivity. Validation of the microarray data was accomplished using semiquantitative RT-PCR. We demonstrated the presence of estrogen and progesterone response elements (ERE and PRE) by analysis of the 5'-flanking regions of a subset of differentially regulated genes. CONCLUSIONS: Using a strict bioinformatics approach of microarray data, we demonstrated significant changes in candidate genes during the transition of the early to the mid-luteal phase of the human endometrium that may have functional significance for the opening and maintenance of the window of implantation.  相似文献
