Extrinsic compression of the renal artery due to a fibromuscular band originating from the diaphragm was encountered in a 26-year-old patient who had systemic hypertension associated with stenosis and kinking of one of her renal arteries. After surgical decompression, the renal artery assumed a normal expansion with disappearance of hypertension. Six other cases of extrinsic compression of the renal artery have been found in the literature. Surgical treatment is mandatory in all cases because the mechanism that causes the lesion makes percutaneous transluminal angioplasty illusory. 相似文献

Osteonectin (SPARC, culture shock protein, BM-40) is a widely distributed glycoprotein which binds calcium and several extracellular matrix proteins, including interstitial collagens and thrombospondin, but whose physiologic role remains undefined. In the present studies, we have demonstrated that immunoreactive osteonectin is present in the distal cortical tubule and medullary tubules of murine kidney. We surveyed the renal epithelial cell lines LLC-PK1, MDCK, and OK for the expression of mRNA encoding osteonectin. We found that osteonectin mRNA is expressed by LLC-PK1 and OK cells but not by MDCK cells, as well as by adult kidney from several species. Calcitonin and vasopressin, agents which increase cAMP in these cells, were found to decrease steady-state osteonectin mRNA concentrations. We found that LLC-PK1 cells produced osteonectin protein, that the protein was localized to intracellular granules, and that the protein bound hydroxyapatite in vitro. Pulse-chase analysis revealed that osteonectin was secreted from the cell layer to the medium after a lag time of four to six hours and was secreted preferentially from the basolateral domain of the cell. The preferential secretion of the calcium-binding protein osteonectin from the renal epithelial cell is consistent with several possible functions, including a structural extracellular matrix protein, a participant in transepithelial ion transport, and an inhibitor of extracellular calcification. 相似文献

Insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) is a mitogen for manycell types and an important modulator of muscle growth and differentiation.IGF-II gene is prevalently expressed during prenatal developmentand its gene activity is regulated by genomic imprinting, inthat the allele inherited from the father is active and theallele inherited from the mother is inactive in most normaltissues. IGF-II expression is activated in several types ofhuman neoplasms and an alteration of IGF-II imprinting has beendescribed in BeckwithWiedemann syndrome and Wilms' tumour.Here we show that monoallelic expression of IGF-II gene is conservedin normal adult muscle tissue whereas two or more copies ofactive IGF-II alleles, arising by either relaxation of imprintingor duplication of the active allele, are found in 9 out of 11(82%) rhabdomyo-sarcomas retaining heterozygosity at 11p15,regardless of the histological subtype. Since IGF-II has beenindicated as an autocrine growth factor for rhabdomyosarcomacells, these findings strongly suggest that acquisition of adouble dosage of active IGF-II gene is an important step forthe initiation or progression of rhabdomyosarcoma tumorigenesis.Among different types of muscle tumors, relaxation of imprintingseems to arise prevalently in rhabdomyosarcomas, since we havedetected only one case of partial reactivation of the maternalIGF-II allele out of 7 lelomyosarcomas tested. 相似文献

The present study describes cause-specific mortality of asbestos cement workers in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. The cohort included workers in ten factories, most of which started operating between 1955 and 1965. Asbestos, mainly chrysotile, constituted 10%–20% of the dry component of the mixture. Crocidolite range between 5% and 50% of total asbestos. Asbestos concentrations up to 44 ff/cc were reported prior to 1975, while in recent years they have usually been below 0–1 ff/cc. The cohort included 3341 workers who had at some time been employed in the ten factories under study. Their mortality experience was compared with that of the population resident in Emilia Romagna. Vital status was ascertained at 1989. Seventy-three subjects were lost to followup (2.2%). Mortality from all causes and from all types of cancer was increased in the cohort. Malignant neoplasms of the respiratory tract showed a significant increase (SMR: 134; 90% confidence interval: 101–175; 40 observed) due to lung cancer (SMR: 124; 90% confidence interval: 91–166; 33 observed) and neoplasms of the pleura, mediastinum, and other parts of the respiratory tract (SMR: 602; 90% confidence interval 237–1267; 5 observed). The discrepancy between observed and expected mortality mainly concerned subjects with at least 20 years of employment in the factories. Neonatal rat motoneurones are electrically coupled via gap junctions and the incidence of this coupling declines during postnatal development. The mechanisms involved in this developmental regulation of gap junctional communication are largely unknown. Here we have studied the role of NMDA receptor-mediated glutamatergic synaptic activity in the regulation of motoneurone coupling. Gap junctional coupling was demonstrated by the presence of graded, short latency depolarising potentials following ventral root stimulation, and by the transfer of the low molecular weight tracer Neurobiotin to neighbouring motoneurones. Sites of close apposition between the somata and/or dendrites of the dye-coupled motoneurones were identified as potential sites of gap junctional coupling. Early postnatal blockade of the NMDA subtype of glutamate receptors using the non-competitive antagonist dizocilpine maleate (MK801) arrested the developmental decrease in electrotonic and dye coupling during the first postnatal week. These results suggest that the postnatal increase in glutamatergic synaptic activity associated with the onset of locomotion promote the loss of gap junctional connections between developing motoneurones. 相似文献

Two hundred forty-two patients referred for various gastrointestinal complaints were evaluated for clinical parameters that would predict findings of lactose malabsorption. Breath hydrogen and blood glucose lactose tests were performed after ingestion of 50 g lactose. Presenting complaints, duration of symptoms, and patient demographics such as age, sex, and ethnic heritage were not different between lactose malabsorbers and absorbers as defined by the breath hydrogen lactose test. Foodrelated symptoms in general and after specific foods such as milk, ice cream, cheese, and yogurt were also similar between groups. Prior to testing, 30% of malabsorbers (N=161) and 36% of absorbers (N=81) reported lactoserelated symptoms (P=NS). The blood glucose response to lactose was abnormal in 60% of malabsorbers and 15% of absorbers. This study confirmed our impression that it is difficult to predict lactose absorption status by clinical parameters. The majority of our lactose malabsorber patients were unaware of lactose-associated symptoms.
