Wide variations in the definitions and methodologies used for studies of injuries in rugby union have created inconsistencies in reported data and made interstudy comparisons of results difficult. The International Rugby Board established a Rugby Injury Consensus Group (RICG) to reach an agreement on the appropriate definitions and methodologies to standardise the recording of injuries and reporting of studies in rugby union. The RICG reviewed the consensus definitions and methodologies previously published for football (soccer) at a meeting in Dublin in order to assess their suitability for and application to rugby union. Following this meeting, iterative draft statements were prepared and circulated to members of the RICG for comment; a follow-up meeting was arranged in Dublin, at which time all definitions and procedures were finalised. At this stage, all authors confirmed their agreement with the consensus statement. The agreed document was presented to and approved by the International Rugby Board Council. Agreement was reached on definitions for injury, recurrent injury, non-fatal catastrophic injury, and training and match exposures, together with criteria for classifying injuries in terms of severity, location, type, diagnosis and causation. The definitions and methodology presented in this consensus statement for rugby union are similar to those proposed for football. Adoption of the proposals presented in this consensus statement should ensure that more consistent and comparable results will be obtained from studies of injuries within rugby union. 相似文献

Vascular function and angiogenesis are regulated by vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF). The purpose of this preliminary study was to address the following questions: Is VEGF expression in the patellar tendon more prevalent in patients with patellar tendinopathy than in individuals with normal, pain-free patellar tendons? Which cell populations express VEGF in normal and tendinopathic tendon? Is there a difference in symptom duration between VEGF+ and VEGF? tendons? We collected patellar tendon tissue from 22 patients undergoing open débridement of the patellar tendon and from 10 patients undergoing intramedullary nailing of the tibia. VEGF expression was assessed immunohistochemically. Relevant inflammatory and repair cell types were immunolabeled. VEGF expression was absent from control tendons, but was present in a subset of patients with histopathological evidence of angiofibroblastic tendinosis. VEGF was expressed in the intimal layer of tendon vessels, but was absent in other cell types. Patients demonstrating VEGF expression in the patellar tendon had a shorter symptom duration (12 ± 7.8 months) than patients with no detectable VEGF (32.8 ± 23.5 months). VEGF may contribute to the vascular hyperplasia that is a cardinal feature of symptomatic tendinosis, particularly in cases with more recent onset. 相似文献

In this work, we aimed at correlating focal atrophy in periventricular structures with cognitive function, in the spectrum from healthy subjects to severe Alzheimer disease: 28 subjects with normal cognition and 84 patients presenting various degrees of cognitive impairment were included in the study. The cognitive level of each subject was assessed with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Atrophy in periventricular structures was inferred by modeling and analyzing local shape variations of brain ventricles: for a given subject, we distinguished between the severity of atrophy, estimated as local enlargement (in mm) of the ventricular surface relative to an average normal subject, and the extent of atrophy, defined as the percentage of the ventricular surface (global or per anatomical region) significantly different from an average control. Linear regression across subjects was performed to evaluate the correlation between atrophy and MMSE score. The severity of atrophy showed good correlation with MMSE score in the left thalamus, the left temporal horn, the left corona radiata, and the right caudate nuclei. The extent of atrophy showed no significant correlations. In conclusion, the MMSE scores correlate with localized depth of atrophy in well-defined periventricular structures. 相似文献

Real-time elastography is a method for visualization of the elastic properties of soft tissue and may potentially enable differentiation between malignant and benign pathologic lesions. Our aim was to validate the method on a tissue-mimicking (TM) phantom and to evaluate the influence of different scanning parameters and investigator variability. A TM-phantom containing eight spherical inclusions with known storage modulus was examined using two different transducers on an ultrasound (US) scanner equipped with software for real-time elasticity imaging. The ultrasound transducers were moved vertically in a repetitive manner to induce strain. Two investigators performed series of standardized elastography scans applying a 0-4 categorical quality scale to evaluate the influence of seven parameters: dynamic range of elasticity, region-of-interest, frequency of transducer movement, rejection of elastogram noise, frame rate, persistence and smoothing. Subsequently, repeated examinations of four selected inclusions were performed using a visual analog scale (VAS) where investigators marked a 100 mm horizontal line representing the span in image quality based on experience from the first examination. The hardest and softest inclusions were imaged more clearly than the inclusions with elasticity more similar to the background material. Intraobserver agreement on elastogram quality was good (kappa: 0.67 - 0.75) and interobserver agreement average (kappa: 0.55 - 0.56) when using the categorical scale. The subsequent VAS evaluation gave intraclass-correlation coefficients for the two observers of 0.98 and 0.93, respectively, and an interclass-correlation coefficient of 0.93. Real-time elastography adequately visualized isoechoic inclusions with different elastic properties in a TM-phantom with acceptable intra- and interobserver agreement. In this study, we evaluated the ability of DNA vaccines encoding the bacterioferritin (BFR) or P39 proteins of Brucella spp. to induce cellular and humoral immune responses and to protect BALB/c mice against a challenge with B. abortus 544. We constructed eukaryotic expression vectors called pCIBFR and pCIP39, encoding BFR or P39 antigens, respectively, and we verified that these proteins were produced after transfection of COS-7 cells. PCIBFR or pCIP39 was injected intramuscularly three times, at 3-week intervals. pCIP39 induced higher antibody responses than did the DNA vector encoding BFR. Both vectors elicited a T-cell-proliferative response and also induced a strong gamma interferon production upon restimulation with either the specific antigens or Brucella extract. In this report, we also demonstrate that animals immunized with these plasmids elicited a strong and long-lived memory immune response which persisted at least 3 months after the third vaccination. Furthermore, pCIBFR and pCIP39 induced a typical T-helper 1-dominated immune response in mice, as determined by cytokine or immunoglobulin G isotype analysis. The pCIP39 delivered by intramuscular injection (but not the pCIBFR or control vectors) induced a moderate protection in BALB/c mice challenged with B. abortus 544 compared to that observed in positive control mice vaccinated with S19. 相似文献

Activated adult human alveolar bone cells were isolated from 2-wk-old osteogenic tissue recuperated from dental implant surgeries following a two-step procedure. Osteogenic tissues were cultured as explant for 2 months. Cells began to migrate in the first 3 d and were confluent in 3–4 wk. However, adjacent to the explants, multicellular cell layers began to form in 10 d, and matrix mineralization was observed by 4 wk in these areas. These formations enlarged and by the end of the culture period, large diffuse matrix mineralization areas were observed. Light and electron microscopic observations confirmed the presence of a collagen matrix undergoing a mineralization process but showing important differences with the mineralized matrix tissue formed with a rat embryo calvaria bone cell system. This new model, using activated human alveolar bone cells, may provide a tool to investigate alveolar bone development and physiology and to set up new therapeutic approaches. 相似文献
