Sudden deafness is acute onset of impaired hearing which develops within hours to few days. The commonly accepted audiometric criterion is a decrease in hearing of ≥30 dB, affecting at least three consecutive frequencies. Hearing loss is thought to involve several causative factors, including internal ear circulatory disturbances. We report the case of a female with an internal carotid artery (ICA) pseudoaneurysm in the distal cervical tract and unilateral sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). As putative risk vascular factor, the patient had history of migraine since youth. Extensive screenings for autoimmune, rheumatic diseases, virological, and microbiological infections were negative. The patient denied recent cervical trauma. Furosemide and oral prednisone were given with initial benefit and withdrawn in 3 weeks. The patient experienced short-lasting episodes of headache, tinnitus, vertigo. Five weeks after first onset, she underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) angiogram which revealed fusiform dilatation of left ICA in the cervical tract. It can be proposed, but it remains to be proved, that the pseudoaneurysm of the cervical ICA plays a role in the patient SSNHL in relation to turbulent flow or thromboembolism of branches to the inner ear.  相似文献

Persistent interstitial pulmonary emphysema (PIPE) is an uncommon complication of premature infants suffering from hyaline membrane disease who have been treated with mechanical ventilation. The presumed mechanism for the development of the disease is via a break in the bronchioalveolar system that allows air to escape into the interstitium. We report a case of a 9-week-old child who developed the localized form of the disease and underwent a lobectomy. Immunohistochemical stains helped to demonstrate the communication between the airway system and interstitium. This report strengthens the theory that the disease develops from airway rupture at the alveolar level. Received August 17, 1998; accepted November 16, 1998.  相似文献

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a mainstay of the Mediterranean diet with its excellent balance of fats and antioxidant bioactive compounds. Both the phenolic and lipid fractions of EVOO contain a variety of antioxidant and anticancer substances which might protect from the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). The function of the intestinal microbiome is essential for the integrity of the intestinal epithelium, being protective against pathogens and maintaining immunity. Indeed, dysbiosis of the microbiota alters the physiological functions of the organ, leading to the onset of different diseases including CRC. It is known that some factors, including diet, could deeply influence and modulate the colon microenvironment. Although coming from animal models, there is increasing evidence that a diet rich in EVOO is linked to a significant reduction in the diversity of gut microbiome (GM), causing a switch from predominant bacteria to a more protective group of bacteria. The potential beneficial effect of the EVOO compounds in the carcinogenesis of CRC is only partially known and further trials are needed in order to clarify this issue. With this narrative review, we aim at discussing the available evidence on the effect of olive oil consumption on GM in the prevention of CRC.  相似文献

An ever-growing amount of composite waste will be generated in the upcoming years. New circular strategies based on 3D printing technologies are emerging as potential solutions although 3D-printed products made of recycled composites may require post-processing. Metallization represents a viable way to foster their exploitation for new applications. This paper shows the use of physical vapor deposition sputtering for the metallization of recycled glass fiber-reinforced polymers processed by UV-assisted 3D printing. Different batches of 3D-printed samples were produced, post-processed, and coated with a chromium metallization layer to compare the results before and after the metallization process and to evaluate the quality of the finishing from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. The analysis was conducted by measuring the surface gloss and roughness, analyzing the coating morphology and thickness through the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs of the cross-sections, and assessing its adhesion with cross-cut tests. The metallization was successfully performed on the different 3D-printed samples, achieving a good homogeneity of the coating surface. Despite the influence of the staircase effect, these results may foster the investigation of new fields of application, as well as the use of different polymer-based composites from end-of-life products, i.e., carbon fiber-reinforced polymers.  相似文献

SARS-CoV-2 is the etiological agent of COVID-19, an extremely heterogenous disease that can cause severe respiratory failure and critical illness. To date, reliable biomarkers allowing for early patient stratification according to disease severity are still lacking. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a vasoactive neuropeptide involved in lung pathophysiology and immune modulation and is poorly investigated in the COVID-19 context. In this observational, prospective cohort study, we investigated the correlation between CGRP and clinical disease evolution in hospitalized moderate to severe COVID-19 patients. Between January and May 2021 (Italian third pandemic wave), 135 consecutive SARS-CoV-2 patients were diagnosed as being eligible for the study. Plasma CGRP level evaluation and routine laboratory tests were performed on blood samples collected at baseline and after 7 days of hospitalization. At baseline, the majority our patients had a moderate to severe clinical presentation, and higher plasma CGRP levels predicted a higher risk of in-hospital negative evolution (odds-ratio OR 2.84 [IQR 1.07–7.51]) and were correlated with pulmonary intravascular coagulopathy (OR 2.92 [IQR 1.19–7.17]). Finally, plasma CGRP levels were also correlated with plasma IP10 levels. Our data support a possible crosstalk between the lung and the neuroimmune axis, highlighting a crucial role for plasma CGRP in sustaining COVID-19-related hyperinflammation.  相似文献

A biodegradable positron-emitting dendritic nanoprobe targeted at αvβ3 integrin, a biological marker known to modulate angiogenesis, was developed for the noninvasive imaging of angiogenesis. The nanoprobe has a modular multivalent core-shell architecture consisting of a biodegradable heterobifunctional dendritic core chemoselectively functionalized with heterobifunctional polyethylene oxide (PEO) chains that form a protective shell, which imparts biological stealth and dictates the pharmacokinetics. Each of the 8 branches of the dendritic core was functionalized for labeling with radiohalogens. Placement of radioactive moieties at the core was designed to prevent in vivo dehalogenation, a potential problem for radiohalogens in imaging and therapy. Targeting peptides of cyclic arginine–glycine–aspartic acid (RGD) motifs were installed at the terminal ends of the PEO chains to enhance their accessibility to αvβ3 integrin receptors. This nanoscale design enabled a 50-fold enhancement of the binding affinity to αvβ3 integrin receptors with respect to the monovalent RGD peptide alone, from 10.40 nM to 0.18 nM IC50. Cell-based assays of the 125I-labeled dendritic nanoprobes using αvβ3-positive cells showed a 6-fold increase in αvβ3 receptor-mediated endocytosis of the targeted nanoprobe compared with the nontargeted nanoprobe, whereas αvβ3-negative cells showed no enhancement of cell uptake over time. In vivo biodistribution studies of 76Br-labeled dendritic nanoprobes showed excellent bioavailability for the targeted and nontargeted nanoprobes. In vivo studies in a murine hindlimb ischemia model for angiogenesis revealed high specific accumulation of 76Br-labeled dendritic nanoprobes targeted at αvβ3 integrins in angiogenic muscles, allowing highly selective imaging of this critically important process.  相似文献

Introduction

The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of ambient temperature on the life span of nickel-titanium (NiTi) files.

Methods

Cyclic fatigue testing of NiTi instruments was performed in a stainless steel artificial canal. During the experiment, 4 different temperatures (0°C, 20°C, 35°C, and 39°C) were used in a thermostatic bath controlled using electronic and infrared controls. Eighty R25 Reciproc Blue (VDW, Munich, Germany) and 80 R25 Reciproc (VDW) instruments were reciprocated in the artificial canal until fracture occurred, and the time to fracture and the length of the fractured fragment were recorded. The phase transformation temperature for 3 instruments of each type was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. One-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni tests were used to statistically analyze the data at a 5% significance level (P < .05).

Results

Reciproc Blue instruments were significantly more resistant to cyclic fatigue than Reciproc at all the temperatures tested (P < .05). Fatigue resistance was proportionally higher as the environmental temperature decreased (0°C > 20°C > 35°C > 39°C). No signi?cant difference was registered for the length of the fractured fragment of both instruments tested at all temperatures tested (P > .05).

Conclusions

Blue alloy significantly increases the cyclic fatigue resistance of Reciproc files compared with M-Wire alloy. Temperature significantly affects the life span of NiTi files. When the ambient temperature increases between 0°C and 35°C, the fatigue resistance of the files statistically decreases.  相似文献
